There is radiation. Each man has his (own) radiation. Those who have got stronger radiation, that radiation gives what is already within them. Because they are “Word made flesh”, that is radiated. To sit in the field or area of the radiation of the Saints gives you all these things straight away. The only thing required is to be receptive. Maulana Rumi says, “If you have the chance of sitting by a Saint even for an hour” – in the manner as I am explaining to you – “that will give you better results than to sit in penances for a hundred years long!” When you sit by fire, you get heat or warmth; when you try to rub wood against wood, and (strike) stone against other things, how will you get the heat? The radiation works. The physical presence of the Master cannot be underrated. Of course, those who have developed receptivity can derive that benefit even from thousands of miles. Just like radios and televisions – you hear the voice from thousands of miles, and you can see who is speaking and what he is speaking. Similarly, if there is nothing remaining between you and the Master, maybe (you are) living on the other side of the seven oceans and the Master on this side, direct your attention to Him. If you have developed that receptivity, you can derive the full benefit of being near Him. That (receptivity) has to be developed. It (to be near the Master even from thousands of miles) is the fate of those who have developed receptivity. But for others, naturally sitting in the physical presence of the Master gives them radical change if they are receptive.
So Masters tell us what to do. “Sit in the company of the Saint within whom He is manifest.” Then he goes further to say, “To sit in His radiation and come in closer contact with Him”, as a man has got a cloth perfumed, you will touch him, pass by him, your clothes will be perfumed. A man who has got dirty clothes, if you touch him, you will get the bad odour, your clothes will be smelling bad. The whole thing is to sit within the radiation, in the field of action of radiation; you will derive wonderful (results). Not like: (suppose) some people sit here, then (they say), “I did not hear (anything)”, (it is) because he was not there; the body was there of course. So when you’d like to derive full benefit of the physical presence of the Master or suchlike man, then there should not remain anything between you and Him, not even your thinking of the body, either. Look! The eyes are the windows of the soul. These are things written in scriptures.
Now Guru Ram Das speaks about other things: “Those who are coloured with the worldly colour, those who have got bad odour”, He says, “Don’t go near them. They are not in contact with God inside them, they are in contact with the life of the senses outside. All filth is within them. And that very filth is radiated: a bad odour.”
Kabir says, “If you find such a man, you run away from him. You should not pass near by him because you might get an infection.” If you happen to talk to such a man, it is just like a scorpion when it stings. Do you know? It is like an ordinary pinprick, but later on there is terrible pain. If you come across such a man, naturally at that time you won’t be feeling much, but later on that develops more and more. So Saints advise, “Don’t have the company of those who are imbued with the filth of the world.” Their radiation gives you all that filth; the atmosphere is charged with that. Kabir gives you an example, as follows: “If there are some threads, with all knots in them, what will you get from them? Because all knots are there, you cannot draw a long thread out of that, and the cloth cannot be woven.” Similarly He says, “Those people are already in doubt; they have not seen God. They are just given up to outer enjoyments like anything. That very thing radiates from (them in) their company. So, avoid that.” Then again He says, “What should you do? Seek the company of a Saint. Go near Him. Try to remain receptive to the radiation – maybe at thousands of miles, or close to Him – with full receptivity.” The God or Word which is manifest there will give you an incentive or boost: you will find that very God within you, with only a little thought of His! Hundreds may sit; He (the Master) gives a little thought, and the outward expression of our soul, the attention, is withdrawn from outside, from the body, and you have a glimpse of Him (within). Is it not wonderful?
I was defining Satsang, what Satsang is. Make the best use of it. Moreover, Christ said, “When more than one man sit in my name, I am there.” When you sit together in the sweet remembrance of the God-into-expression-Power, or the human pole in which He is manifest, you will have the effect by radiation. When people sit in such rapt attention, they sometimes see the form of the Master, too, with open eyes. This is the feat of receptivity. We should learn how to hold Satsang.

To touch an empty wish
And feels so dry

there are indeed many many so-called master. How to differentiate?

O my brother, just because someone has collected a group of followers, does that make him a holy man?
It matters what we want to attain
Sant Kirpal Singh describes it as follows: There are Masters and masters, with due deference to all. It is for us to see what we get. Those who are after worldly things or supernatural powers or mind-reading or perhaps healing are really not after God. These are side issues. They get that thing and that is all; but they do not get God.
Why is gurudom in disrepute today?
Modern gurus are generally political at heart. They have an axe to grind – to make money and get honour and respect. They are not concerned with the well-being of the people. Their object is to impress the people by their hypocrisy, deceit and falsehood. You may be taken in by these methods.
What did Christ say: “Beware of the false prophets who come in sheep’s clothing but are ravening wolves.” They appear to be very polite. The only criterion can be one who can give you a lift, open the inner eyes so that you see there is light there; not tell you that you’ll get it in due course. What another criterion can there be, tell me? Their propaganda? No! There is no dearth of propaganda anywhere. Money can buy anything. Propaganda can be paid for. But what is the criterion? Can he open the inner eye, remove the darkness from within for you to see? There you say, “God is Light”.

“Tricky people create confusion and the confused follow them as their Master and out of confusion they do not leave.
To create confusion in one’s heart is the act of “so-called poles” (who claim to be a Master or a competent teacher but do not have any competency).
Directly or indirectly they are connected with the negative power. They themselves do not know the consequences of that play and cannot explain it to others. Preacher and followers are under illusion, which they think to be an act of God.”
Miracles, which are a play of the astral powers, affect such people and bring them into the fold of the negative power. Those who enjoy the miraculous powers are devoid of the positive and the higher values of life, (they cannot regain them) till they really find the way to an awakened person.”
The miracles shown by those confused people are the outbursts of the astral effects in the physical world and bring them lots of diseases of the mind. Thus the diseases of the mind are due to the astral effects on the mind. In other words mental diseases or the diseases of the mind are astral diseases. Most of the people wish to gain peace of the mind, and they can be easily misled by the negative power and the astral effects upon them.
Very rare are such people who have no desires and whose wishes are fulfilled without having any desire. They are the blessed ones to whom God reveals all they need. All others are thus (due to their wishes) bound in giving and taking, since there is no (possibility of getting) free out of grace without the gracious Master. Thus all such people lose their capital, and the interests are increasing till they have lost the whole capital and also the positive vision.
Its likings in an always finer and more subtle way, and there is no end to this desire. Thus one feels even more happy when one sees something in the astral vision. But he is ignorant and does not know this play which is mere smoke and dust. The miracles which appear due to one’s wishes, affect one’s mind and the thoughts remain involved.
The fruit of life is within the belief of the Master
One may outwardly pose like a Master, one may create oneself to be a holy person and start proving a great holy personality with the help of bookish knowledge, but the inner life is not changed. For how long will such acting and posing continue? At last the cat will be out of the bag. For how long will people trust?
One may put a silken cloth on dirt, the bad smell will be emitted from there. Acting and posing have taken the place of true living. Those who act well are taken into good books. When people have bitter experiences for want of their demand, they call names (him who was not able to give them something). They should (complain), since they had given their head and heart. So Master says, “Believe only when you see yourself.” Without seeing, sometimes belief becomes a mystery and to solve it may take one’s whole life.
Master tells us: “Reading, writing, feelings, emotions. drawing inferences are all subject to error, seeing is above all.”
All worldly disputation is fake and futile.
There are two knowledges – one of the heart and the other relating to bookish knowledge. The knowledge of the heart is light and full of intoxication. It is easy to carry either during life or after life. Whereas the bookish knowledge is a burden of many sighs and is difficult to carry.
Saints have respect for the bookish knowledge provided one moves further to attain it in practical form. Otherwise this theoretical knowledge is liable to forgetting. In the scriptures there is written about God, but God is not there. Without the practical knowledge, there can be strains of various degrees, which leads to illusion and delusion.
The “so-called saints” in the world are devoid of that practical knowledge but are well versed with the theoretical aspect of life which they have grasped from the experience of others. They advise others (inspite of) their fake and suspicious conduct. They preach the truth but they act the other way. There is the difference of day and night between their inner and outer life. It is highest time to rely on the experience of our past competent Masters, which are in accordance to the holy scriptures, and to develop the sincere wish to have those experiences ourselves. And this very same experience we should demand (from a Master). One should create a ruling passion to get the highest gift of life and never remain (contented) in those experiences limited to one’s intellect and mind. Where the world’s philosophies end, there the religion starts. The physical, astral and causal region are the worlds made by physical, astral and causal matter, and they have no importance for us and have nothing to provide. Whatever exists there is not the heritage of the soul, but is rather the food and heritage of mind and intellect. What the soul wants is the longing (for God) and the reunification with Him.

We have just seen that as a counterweight to both the faculties of mind, that of sight and audition, the providence has provided us with a treasure of divinity within which can be unearthed to our advantage with the aid of a competent Master. So mind can be controlled only with the grace of the Master, who attunes it with something substantial within – the light and voice of God. We should always try to sit at ease at the eye focus, the resting place of the soul during waking hours, and try to get the mystic experience which the Master vouchsafes to all who come to Him.
The search without causes a lot of pain and sorrow. The well of life-giving nectar is within and one need dip therein.
With all our gratifications at the sensual level, we get nowhere. “Desire is the root cause of all misery,” exclaimed Buddha. It is the intense craving for the enjoyment of the senses which leads to untold misery and agony. It is a perverted viewpoint that we try to satisfy our thirst for enjoyment by our (outer) indulgence. Even in the field of spiritual discipline, many souls continue looking for the Lord outside in the scriptures, places of pilgrimage, ascetic living, or in other good acts, all of which mean searching the self outside, ignoring the fact that the fountain of bliss and immortality known as Amritsar (the pool of nectar) is within, and can be properly tapped with the grace of a Master-saint. The bliss-giving holy Naam, or the Word, is within the body; and we waste our precious time and energy in its pursuit in the wrong direction. The divine source of immortality is within us all, and those who introvert and recede within do sip the elixir of life; and by drinking that, all their cravings come to an end. The holy initiation into this mystic science by the living Master gives a foretaste of the wine from the divine cup-bearer, who doles out and administers it under the divine commandment. No worldly enjoyments can equal the ineffable grandeur which lies far beyond the ken of human comprehension and apprehension.
After we have known that the very fountainhead of perpetual bliss and harmony is within us, and fortunately having been blessed with holy initiation by the gracious Master, the next question is how to derive the maximum benefit. The succeeding verses provide an answer to this question.
Leaving all vices, become an abode of all virtues. Whenever you fall into the vices, it behoves you sincerely to repent.
Herein lies the secret of spiritual discipline. To err is one thing, but to go on repeating past mistakes is unpardonable. Most people have no idea whatsoever of their doings. In the whirlwind of passions, we seldom care to look within and pause to consider about our lapses or shortcomings. Many of us do not know the maladies with which we are affected. This is why daily self-introspection is recommended, for unless we know of our faults, we cannot take the next step of weeding them out. Ethical life precedes Spirituality. It is only during the silent moments of deep thought and meditation that one comes to find these hidden thieves constantly keeping us in perpetual bondage. Every action has a reaction. It is a universal law. It works everywhere. The spiritual aspirant is necessarily required to keep a stern watch over his thoughts, words, and deeds. The evil has its roots deep down in the unfathomable past and grows strong with the present actions. You should know it for certain that the past cannot be undone, but one can take a stand somewhere. It is only possible when we have something more fascinating and more abiding than the sense objects that keep us in fascination. Mind loves to enjoy, and all enjoyments derived at the sensual level are but a reflection of the attention of the self within. The gross vices that at present hold a charm should be weeded out by self-analysis and self-introspection. These should be replaced with their opposites, the ennobling virtues, by leading a well regulated life. Regular meditations and continued self-examination help a lot in this direction. The changeover cannot, of course, be accomplished overnight; but patient and persistent efforts do go a long way in achieving the desired results. We may fall and fail here and there; but with each failure, we get more strength to fight and overcome the evil. A sincere repentance and prayer for divine help and guidance make us invincible in the long run. Thus, by continued vigilance and check, we can get good dividends. The mind is a treacherous gamester. With every loss it craves for more gain. Unless we stop eating any more poison, we cannot possibly wash off the poison in our bones and blood.
Man does not differentiate between good and evil with the result that he again and again goes deep into the quagmire of delusion.
This is our true state of affairs. We can hardly foresee the results of our doings and foolishly cling to the pleasurable sensations, caring little for the consequences. Having been fully engrossed in the lures and temptations of the physical life, we are unwillingly going down in the scales of moral values. Our flight is like that of an ignorant man held fast in the quicksands of time who at every step forward goes deeper into the treacherous sands. A mighty hand of some friend may come to our rescue and pull us out of this condition of helplessness. Our mighty little soul is woefully entangled in the physical limitations; and only the gracious Master, in the form of the holy Naam, may come to our rescue. Otherwise, there is no hope for our safety. Like muck-worms, we are rushing in the mud. In spite of it, O Lord, have pity and take us out!
Within thee is the dross of false attachments. How can the washing of the body help?
The water can wash off dirt from the body, but not from the mind polluted with vices. There are many vices lying hidden in the mind including those of falsehood and greed. These are the dormant latencies of the mind and require a strenuous effort for eradication. Falsehood does not simply mean telling lies, but it means and includes the great gulf between what is in one’s head and heart and what one says and does. Many persons come up and take the spiritual course as a fancy, but inwardly with some ulterior worldly motive. They fail to attain their goal. We should be true to ourselves, and delve deep into our hearts to find out as to what is the underlying factor for which we are taking up the holy path. The Master is competent to grant us anything we cherish of this or of the other world. But He advises us always to keep our target high; that is spiritual perfection. Greed is equally a strong fetter. It should be overcome by renunciation. Greed breeds hatred and feeds fat the latent ego. It blinds the inner eye and thickens the dark veil. A spiritual aspirant should always feel grateful for the manifold blessings, which are granted to him by the grace of the Master. If we awake to the sacred truth and comprehend the grandeur of the holy Naam granted by the Master, we will be dumbfounded with its divine ecstasy.
Let the peerless Naam be ever with the Gurmukh. This will make manifest all the inner secrets.
This holy Naam is immaculately pure and its constant practice confers the greatest blessings. One must, however, try to be a Gurmukh, the mouthpiece of the Guru, in his daily life. It means that we should follow the behests of the Master implicitly. The term Gurmukh has a special significance in the sacred terminology of the Saints. It literally means the mouthpiece of the Master or a prototype of the Master. We should always yearn for spiritual perfection, which the Master has set before us by precept and action. One with all his attainments should never consider oneself as perfect, because there are innumerable spiritual realms, one over the other, as so many mansions in the palace of the Father. Always look up for the charming radiant form of the Master within, and follow Him lovingly. The holy meditation on Naam will open up many a new region, and divine grace will fill in with abundance.
Give up covetousness, censure of others, love of mortal things, and take to the search of truth through the Word of the Master.
The Master repeats His admonition in yet stronger terms. We should give up the habit of useless talk for and against others. Censure means criticism, but Masters have gone a step further. They include in it both praise and dispraise. Whatever we talk about has a bearing on our character. If we talk about the evils of a person, naturally these will gradually begin to reflect on ourselves. Similarly, if we give undue importance to somebody, it will lead to misrepresentation, for we cannot possibly know the intrinsic worth of a person. It is, therefore, enjoined that we should always be calm, cool, and collected within. Nothing is perfect save the gracious Master on whose chosen human pole that divine power works. If there is anyone who commands our reverence and adoration, he is the Master. And it is our own mind with all its blemishes that deserves scrutiny and censure. If we throw a brick-bat into a pool of dirty water, we are sure to soil our own clothes. So we must always be cautious in this respect and always dwell on our own selves by keeping our faculties well under control by self-examination and spiritual discipline. The holy words of the Master when cultivated carefully will bring much reward.
Redeem us, O Lord, in any way it pleaseth Thee. Thy servant Nanak adores the holy Shabd.
Humility is the highest watermark in spirituality. Guru Nanak concludes the hymn by invoking the Lord to take any course that pleaseth Him and prays for redemption from the whirlwind of lusts and passions. I always adore and appreciate the greatness of the holy Shabd – the God-into-Expression Power – that has blessed me with this rare union. So the Naam, or the audible life stream, is the central theme of the teachings of the Masters, through whose grace one finds everlasting peace and harmony. In fact, the living Master is Word personified, as it is through Him that the divine word is made manifest to us and helps us in attaining perfection in due course.
