Kirpal Sagar

On His last Punjab-tour in October 1973, Sant Kirpal Singh visited the Agriculture Farm located near Nawanshar. There was one room made of mud and one Pacca-room beside a little room for the water-pump. Master stayed there nearly for fifteen minutes. He took water from the water-pump and a grain of rice. Then He blessed Kirpal Sagar which now has been built beside the Farm.

With due permission of the Master, the name Manav Kendra was changed to Kirpal Sagar before Sant Kirpal Singh left His physical body. Kirpal means ‘Grace’, Sagar means ‘Ocean’ – thus the name Kirpal Sagar means ‘Ocean of Grace’.

Master wants from heart that everyone should do the work (selfless service): Everyone should put his head and heart to do that work. It is His earnest desire, a desire from His heart, because He loves each child and wants to develop everyone. He is not having any connection with us on the physical level, but His contact is direct with the soul.

So blessed are those who are chosen for this purpose; they are very fortunate. Master always laid stress upon this subject (the importance of selfless service). Because in the lives of all competent Masters and their devotees, there was only one way: To live and to do for Him! And this is the ultimate goal. If the disciple is obliged to the Master, he says, “I have to do whatever my Master would tell me, it is my highest duty to obey His order.”

Background of Kirpal Sagar

The place which Sant Kirpal Singh has chosen for Kirpal Sagar has also a background which first was not known to us. When we started the construction work, people from the surroundings came to us, and one of them told that an old person had been living there whose name was Chattar Singh; he was considered to be mad. To that place the cows were taken for grazing, and he used to sit along with the boys there. He never would return to his home, he stayed overnight in the forest, which was full of snakes. There was also a certain animal which always attacks man. It is not injurious, but its teeth are very sharp. One time, when taking rest, he was bitten by this animal and his nose was bleeding. Those boys wanted to take him to the doctor nearby for dressing the wound, but he said, “No, there is a hospital, I have got it dressed over there.”

Sometimes the boys used to say, “Old man, you are smelling, you should take a bath.” He would reply, “Yes, here is a Sarovar, a holy tank, I’m always taking a bath there.” When they offered him to share their food, he answered, “No, there is a big common kitchen here, I always take the food from here.” All the time he used to tell such things, and he even said, “There is a big temple, a house of God.” So all people called him a mad person, who is seeing things where other people don’t see anything. Now those persons from the neighbourhood  believe that he was a holy man.

So, holy places are already fixed by the Masterpower. Kings, premiers, and rich persons can create cities, but holy places are built only by the Masters, they are built in the omnipresence of the Masterpower. The guidance of the Master continues every moment, and in spite of many problems in the beginning the commissioned Manav Kendra could be constructed.

It belongs to all human beings of the world

Kirpal Sagar is a common ground for all people to get together, irrespective of caste, colour, creed, religion or country. It belongs to all human beings of the world. In Kirpal Sagar no religion but the basic teaching of all religions is taught, which is one and the same and has been written with one opinion.

To keep the various outer rituals and rites of the different religions with their basic signification is no bar to true religion. Every religion teaches the universal teaching of the universal link among all human beings – the Brotherhood of Men under the Fatherhood of God. Religion is a very smooth pattern and a way to realize one’s self, if one rises above the shackles of the religion.

Kirpal Sagar is neither being built in the memory of Sant Kirpal Singh, nor is it a personal wish. It was the wish of Sant Kirpal Singh which is being fulfilled by all devoted disciples of Him.

Moreover, who learns and yearns or who wants to learn and yearn can also work in Kirpal Sagar, as it is the work of God, done by man but inspired by God. This is the highest but the rarest chance that ever comes in the life of a human being.

Today I would like to give some information about social activities in Kirpal Sagar.

Selfless help for needy and ill people are a way of keeping distance to one’s own ego,
if there is no self-pride involved in it.

From heart to heart

Kirpal Charitable Hospital

Sant Kirpal Singh whole-heartedly wished to provide help to those people who cannot afford medical care. Thus the hospital became the first facility within the Project taking up its function in 1983.

Various treatments are applied, such as allopathic, homeopathic, and ayurvedic therapies.

Poor people receive free medical treatment and medicine at the hospital. Presently the majority of the patients are treated as outpatients.

The accomplishment of the hospital up to 50 beds with departments of general medicine, pediatric, gynecology, obstetrics, ophthalmology, dialysis center and surgery is under construction.

Furthermore, ambulances reach out to remote villages at central gathering points, such as schools, to provide medical care for people who otherwise would not have a chance to see a doctor. From time to time external eye specialists come to Kirpal Sagar to perform eye operations.

A dentist’s practice at the hospital provides dental care for the people of the neighbouring area and also for the students of the Kirpal Sagar Academy.

Students of the future Medical College will perform their practical training within the hospital. An international student exchange is also planned.

Medical Care

From the very beginning of the Kirpal Sagar project, humanitarian help has been provided to the people of the surroundings. Due to the weak infrastructure of this rural area it is very difficult to get medical treatment, especially for the needy.

Medical camps provided help for patients from the near by villages before the “Kirpal Charitable Hospital” eventually took up its function in 1983 as the first facility within the Project.

Meanwhile a large Hospital complex was constructed with departments of general medicine, pediatric, gynecology, obstetrics, ophthalmology, dialysis centre and surgery.

Disadvantaged people obtain free distribution of medicine and medical care irrespective of caste, colour and creed.

Many volunteers from different countries support the project and some medicine firms in Germany and Switzerland are donating medicines.

Selfless service

To serve the poor and the needy is the true selfless service. If you give food to the hungry, you will never feel hungry. If you give water to the thirsty, you will never feel thirsty. How true is the prayer of the meek and unwanted and accursed is the life of him who ignores, and how great and broat-hearted is the one who works selflessly and gives head and heart to overcome the miseries of others. By holding on the treasures of virtues he becomes actionless. So long as one knows not the miseries of others, he knows not the very secret to overcome his own miseries. Wise persons tell us that it is vain to ask for pleasures and shun from pains. More one does, more one feels happy. This is what Sant Kirpal Singh ever felt.

Help for Self-Help
Job-training

At Surajpur a stitching and sewing school was opened in April 2005, there sewing and needle work courses are offered to enable women to earn their own living. Also, a training for nurses is planned for the future.

Untrained workers can undergo a job-training in the workshops at Kirpal Sagar, which also provide jobs for people with disabilities.

Women empowerment

Since the year 2008 seminaries for women empowerment are organized by the B.ed.College at Kirpal Sagar.

 

Marriages arranged in Kirpal Sagar for needy and poor people

Marriages

In the Indian culture, marriage plays an important role but wedding ceremonies are very expensive. Consequently, Unity of Man helps poor families by arranging the wedding and the furnishings for the couples to give them a good start in their family life. The marriage ceremonies are celebrated according to the religious belief of the couples. The newly married couples receive basic equipments needed for a new household: a fully equipped bedroom, furniture for a living-room, kitchen utensils as well as clothes and watches, everything sponsored by Unity of Man.

Disaster relief

Further help is supplied in case of disasters. During the big flood in 2010, two truckloads with emergency supplies were sent to the city of Leh, Ladakh.

Since Kirpal Sagar has its own water supply, big water tanks are put up in neighbouring towns during a big drought, to supply people passing by with drinking water.

The size and variety of the now existing facilities enable to react flexibly in emergency situations. In the home for the elderly for example orphaned children could be accommodated together with their grandfather.

No one can be said to have been born for himself alone, for none can be an island unto himself. To serve the needy, sick and starving, is also a sideline, more effective than mere preaching.

Preliminary Qualifications for an Aspirant

Just as in any other science, certain preliminary qualifications are required before much progress can be made. Married life, hard work, or a poor environment are no bar. It does not count in your favour that you may hold a high position or possess immense wealth. Neither does membership in a particular faith serve as a recommendation. Wherever he may be, a man must strive for nobility of character, self-control and purity of heart. Purity of heart in thought, word, and deed, is essential. “Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.” An ethical life is a stepping stone to spirituality, but spirituality, however, is not just ethical living. This we must always bear in mind.

We can divide man’s life into (i) diet, and (ii) his dealings with others. With regard to diet, vegetarianism and abstinence from alcohol and drugs are essential. ”Thou shalt not kill” and “Live and let live” should be our principles in life. The body is the temple of God and is a sacred place. We are not to neglect or abuse it, but should take the best possible care to properly maintain it. All intoxicants are also to be avoided as they make us morbid and of shaky consciousness. With regard to our dealings with others, we should sow the seed of kindness in order to reap its fruit. Love and humility are most necessary. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” ”Love, and all blessing shall be added unto you.” “Love thine enemy, and do good to them that despitefully use you.” God is immanent in every form and whoever loves God, must love God’s creation. To love God is to love all humanity. We should also earn our living by the sweat of our brow and share with others. These are not empty sayings, but very wise and sound advice.

 

Karma (Actions and Deeds)

Each thought, each word and each deed has to be accounted for and compensated for in nature. Every cause has an effect and every action brings about a reaction. Uproot the cause and the effect disappears. This has been done by the Masters who have transcended these laws, but all others are bound by the bonds of Karma, which is the root cause of physical existence and the clever device of nature to maintain this existence. The law of Karma sees to it that we are paid an eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth, in the shape of joy or suffering. It is the goading whip in the hidden hands of nature. The mind contracts Karma, puts a covering on the soul and rules the body through the organs and the senses. Although it is the soul that imparts strength to the mind, the latter has assumed sovereignty and is governing the soul instead. Control of the mind, therefore, is the first step to spirituality. Victory over the mind is victory over the world. Even accomplished yogis and mystics who can transcend to relatively high spiritual realms are not left untouched by the hand of Karma.

 

Saints classify Karmas into three distinct groups, as follows:

  • (i) Sanchit (stored)

Good or bad deeds that stand to our account as earned and contracted in all previous bodies of the order of creation, counting from the day of the first appearance of life on earth. Alas! Man knows nothing about them or their extent.

  • (ii) Prarabdha (Fate or Destiny)

The result and effect of which has brought man into his present body and has to be paid off in this life. The reactions of these Karmas come to us unexpectedly and unperceived and we have no control over them whatsoever. Good or bad, we have to tolerate or bear this Karma laughing or weeping, as it happens to suit us.

  • (iii) Kriyaman (Account of our actions and deeds in the present body)

This is distinct from the above mentioned two groups because here man is free to do exactly as he pleases, within certain limits. Knowingly or unknowingly, deeds committed and coming under this heading bear fruit. The result of some of these we reap before we die and the residue is transferred to the Sanchit storehouse.

Karma is the cause of rebirth and each birth is in turn followed by death. Thus the cycle of enjoyment and suffering, which are concomitants of birth and death, continues. “As you think, so you become,” is an unalterable law of nature, owing to which this universe exists. No amount of integrity or genius can absolve a man so long as there is the slightest trace of Karma. Ignorance of the law is no excuse, and though there may be some concession or relaxation with man-made laws under special circumstances, there is no such allowance made for this in nature’s laws. Prayer, confession and atonement may give temporary mental relief but they cannot overcome Karma. All Karma must be wiped out completely before permanent salvation can be had.

Disturbed by these facts, man seeks solace in deep pious doctrines, or when he comes to know that both good and bad deeds are fetters – one of gold, the other of iron – he turns to renunciation. Different faiths promise relief but he soon finds out that this is only temporary. How then does a Master approach this problem? At the time of Initiation, the Master begins the process of winding up all Karmas of the initiate. He gives him a contact with the sound current, by practicing which the Sanchit account is burnt away. The process is similar to putting a handful of seeds in a pan and placing them on a fire, which causes the seeds to puff up and lose their property of growing again. Then the Kriyaman account is dealt with. After warning his disciples to guard against opening any new account of bad deeds, the Master grants a general clemency in respect of past deeds, part of which the disciple has already settled in this life up to the time of Initiation. He is enjoined to lead a clean life and to weed out all imperfections in him by self-introspection from day to day. The Prarabdha Karma is not touched by Saints because this is the cause of the physical body, which would vanish due to the interference with nature’s laws. Thus a very small amount of Karma now remains to be tolerated in the physical body for the remaining years of the disciple’s life, but even this is softened by the grace of the Master.

The law of grace works wonders and a devotee who, out of loving devotion, reposes all his hopes in the Master, passes off unscathed from the pinching effects of the reactions of past Karmas. In moments of misery, worry and trouble, the Master is our refuge. He acts unperceived at any distance. Just as a mother of a sick child holds the child securely in her lap during an operation so that it does not feel any pain, so too the Master holds us in his loving embrace. Out of their abundance of sympathy, love and kindness, the Saints at times take upon their own shoulders some Karmic sufferings of their disciples through the law of sympathy. There is no court of trial after death for a devoted disciple. The Master is all in all for him.

Why does a Master Saint take all this on Himself? Because He inherits His merciful nature from God above, who commissions Him to personally distribute this treasure of mercy. Thus the Master is honoured like God. Sant Mat has volumes of books written in praise of the Masters, and if just as many books were to be written, it would hardly do justice to the vastness of their love and kindness.

Time casts its heavy shadow over man. He has to work hard to keep pace with the changing times. So deeply is he absorbed in his external needs and desires that he forgets all about contentment, sympathy and love. Entangled and surrounded by the “deadly five” – lust, anger, greed, attachment and vanity – he stumbles and cries out to the Unseen for help. Heaven’s mercy is stirred and as times stiffen, the Almighty extends His help through the Masters more and more lavishly. Such is the case in this Kali Yuga – the Iron Age.

It is indeed very hard to believe that anyone can be above the five passions mentioned above, and that he can enter the Kingdom of Heaven during his lifetime. All mankind is under the control of these five and only a Master can save a man from their clutches. We all demand reliable proof before committing ourselves, and this is given by a Master in the shape of an experience of the life impulse or Naam (the Word) and some inner vision. Contact with a Master is essential. Those who keep aloof and depend on themselves or rely on tradition and priests – equally ignorant as themselves – are deprived of contact with this Power; and as the saying goes, “When the blind leads the blind, both fall into the ditch”.

Indifference, non-acceptance or disbelief will not be to our advantage when nature enforces its universal ordinance – death. Our position will be that of a pigeon who, on seeing a cat approaching, shuts its eyes and believes that the cat cannot then molest it; but in a few seconds the poor bird is in the powerful jaws of the cat. It is then too late to think of escape. So be alert while there is yet time!

Divine will

The will of God pervades and sustains everywhere, but still remains indescribable. No one can know the will of God except the one who surrenders to His will and on whom God showers the glimpses of His will. By accepting the will of God, he attunes his own will to the will of God. When the will of man merges into the will of God, one experiences that the whole creation is the manifestation of God. He, who fully surrenders to the will of God, experiences all that is contained in His will.

To make His will one’s own, is the means to achieve Him.

Will itself baffles all description. Still, to give an idea of it, Nanak explains it to some extent in Stanza 2 (of the Jap Ji). It may be defined as something making and unmaking the universe with a conscious entity at its back. The absolute is Wordless, Imageless and Nameless. When it came into being, it was called Word or Naam, which is the cause of all creation.

The Word might be taken as the All-pervading Spirit working out the world’s greatest phenomena. The Will is identical with this All-Pervading Spirit, but we must not imagine it as blind – for it is intelligent, sentient and purposive. This Ever-Active Will, enshrouded by the illusive matter, can only be revealed by attuning one’s will to it. All other means fail. Man’s ways are all in vain.

The Will of the Lord

The will of the God pervades and sustains everywhere, but still remains indescribable. No one can know the will of God except the one who surrenders to His will, on whom God showers the glimpses of His will. By accepting the will of God, he attunes his own will to the will of God. When the will of man merges into the will of God, one experiences that the whole creation is the manifestation of God.

He who fully surrenders to the will of God, experiences all that is contained in His will. Such one is called Satguru and He has known the Satpurusha. So the Satguru is self-consistent and self-contained. There is nothing outside and He sustains everywhere and in each one. He contains all that we need here and hereafter. Whatever He contains is to give and He gives for all the times. His gift is potent and positive, provides us the everlasting life and all that is needed for the everlasting life.

His will creates love, devotion and self-surrender. God is love and love is God and the way back to God is love. The extreme love creates fear and respect and out of fear and respect devotion develops. Devotion bears higher status in the heart of man than love, because it could change the heart of a person with fear and respect of the Master. The devotion creates yearning in the life of man. Out of yearning one surrenders to the will of God. So man goes through the various phases of love till he himself becomes Word-personified personality. That one will obey and remains surrendered to the will of God.

The man on the level of mind and senses creates doubt, fear, bigotry, otherness, etc. Only the fear of the God, which comes through the will of God, dispels all and one remains in the gracious protection of the Master that works overhead all the times.

Some in utter troublesome atmosphere do adjust and thank God and say, “It is the will of the Lord.” They are fortunate. “O God, bless us with the company of such people.”

While Guru Arjan Dev was sitting on hot plates, Hazrat Mian Mir, a Divine friend of Guru Arjan Dev, said unto Him, “I cannot bear all that you are going to bear. If you order me, I can separate the brick from the brick and separate the truth from the falsehood.” Guru Arjan Dev told him, “His will is sweet to me. His will is His order. Blessed are those on whom the will of God works graciously. Such ones I adore forever. They are worth of worshipping.”

Such ones bring the truth directly into the heart of man and that, too, without learning and yearning. So he who surrenders and hears the will of God in whatever way and situation it may come, is said to be the God-into-action Power. So without love, devotion, surrender, yearning and ruling passion, the will of God does not come.

Our soul has the power and has all potentialities and possibilities to hear the will of God, but because of its identification on the level of senses and sense-organs it is losing the chance to hear, though the will of God is innate and inherited. Compassion, forbearance, and tolerance are the forethoughts to move towards and accept the will of God. As nothing can be said about the will of God, so nothing we do against the mind and help ourselves to hear the will of God. This is misfortune. All Masters trained their mind to accept the will of God, thus remained unattached and superseded, and surpassed in the dire consequences in their lives. The mystery of the will of God dwelt in them in the form of radiation, bliss and grace of God, which they distributed free of hands to all those who deserved it. So lots of people benefited from it and still the will of God remained indescribable.

Whatever we see and experience is the outcome of His will and with whatever He blesses us to transcend and to see and experience from stages to stages, of which we are ignorant as yet, is also the manifestation of His will. It is but natural that one binds in a more positive and in a potent way with His will.

When we surrender to the Master, we experience lots of attributes of His will in the Word-personified Form. We experience that Guru is the Giver of all the gifts of our life. He is full of compassion and mercy.

Kabir tells He was sent to create, when there was no sun, no moon, no god, goddesses, and He created with His will. He tells about the whole creation and He came as Satsukrat, Munindar, Karunamae and Kabir in all the four ages. He was the Sat Purusha. Yet He tells that the whole manifestation is of His will, which is indescribable. His will means that He who created, only He knows, why and how He created. From there is no way than to love His will, for that we should love the creation which is the manifestation of His Will. Master tells us, “The world you see is the image of the One who created it, and while living therein you can see Him.”

When we accept His will by mouth and do not accept it from heart, our attention is bewildered. Masters tell us to obey His will by thoughts, deeds and actions, and with attention as well all the times, so that we experience that there is nothing lost or gained in this world. The one who does so, thanks Him while eating, while seeing, while sleeping, and while going through the hard experience and hard facts of life.

All that we do with attention is good and all that we do on the level of mind and senses – the outcome of which is ego and attachment – is bad. The former takes us to Godhood, the latter takes us to transmigration. In both the cases the will of God becomes prominent .

We create lots of doubts on the level of intellect and science. Has anybody seen the intellect? Only the work of the intellect is seen. So the will (of God) is not seen, its manifestation is seen. Whereas the intellect is limited and the will of God is beyond all descriptions. Intellect is part of the human body and man is the will of God. Discriminating power in man is the power with which one can know what is what. Without knowing what is what the intellect cannot work.

We love and respect somebody who is worthy of it, give food to our discriminating power, but doing otherwise we are led astray from our awareness. Whatever happens or mishappens is the will of God. The sinner repents over his sins and he is heard by the radiant form of the Master within; that Power manages to bring him to a competent Master. This is but the will of God. What we learn from the will of God is that His will is diffused everywhere and is the uncaused cause of all. There is unity among the whole creation, of whatever character each holds, since the whole creation binds back to the one primal cause and eternal principle.

The Will of God baffles all descriptions.
Guru Nanak refers to us to make His will our own will.

He who surrenders to His will, reaches his destination. There is no other possibility to merge into His will.

The intention of the movement Unity of Man is to inspire man by the ideal set by Sant Kirpal Singh:

 

Be good – Do good – Be one

 

It invites all to unite in order to find out about the spiritual base of human nature and to promote a spirit of oneness.

The name Unity of Man carries the core message of Sant Kirpal Singh:

This human birth is our chance to realize the great truth of the oneness of life
vibrating in the universe – Unity already exists, we only have forgotten it.

 

Respect for the whole creation and love and tolerance for each human being regardless of colour, creed or nationality are the practical shapes of this ideal.

There is one hope for the world, and this hope lies in the spiritual link from man to man and nation to nation. This genuine hope will bring us together.

The problems of the world are not of political, but of spiritual nature, so we have to find the solution on the spiritual level, on the level of consciousness.

The change will begin from man’s heart.

Kirpal Sagar – all Religions peacefully together under one roof

In 2007 there was a World Conference on Unity of Man and it was the first time in mankind’s history that symbols of truth of all religions side by side were revealed in Kirpal Sagar during this unique celebration.

This is an example that all religions can live together in co-existence in harmony – as there is only One God for all – we all are His children. God created man but man created religions. They all are a help for us to think of God, remember Him and it is not meant to fight against each other (one religion against another). Only ego says: this is better, this is higher – we are all in the same school of life, and aren’t we living on the same planet?…
