LEARN TO DIE SO THAT YOU MAY BEGIN TO LIVE (by Sant Kirpal Singh Ji)
We are all under a grand delusion. What is this delusion in which we are adrift? We are the indweller of the manbody but have become identified with the body so much so that we have become as if we were the body itself. This body has been given to you with the grace of God to find your way back to Him. You are conscious entities, a drop of the Ocean of all Consciousness. With His grace you have got the manbody, the highest rung in Creation, in which you can go back to the true Home of your Father. We are under a grand delusion for two reasons. The body is made of matter, the whole world is made of matter. Matter is changing every minute and at the same speed as our body is changing. If two things are changing at the same speed and we are identified with one of them, then both appear to be stationary. Suppose some men are rowing in a boat and the boat is going in the same direction as the flow of the river. If you are identified with the boat and the speed of the boat and the river is the same, then you appear to be stationary. The question arises of how to be out of this delusion? The body and the world, both of which are made of matter, are changing. There are two ways to be out of this delusion. One is by far sight. When a man is sitting in a boat he should look to the shoals of the river and he will find that he is going downstream. But the best way is to be out of the boat. So the Masters advise, “O man, you are under a grand delusion, whether you are learned or unlearned, rich or poor. You must be out of this delusion to enable you to see this world in its right perspective”.
So there are two ways and the first one is by far sight. Another effective way is to go and sit in a graveyard, or in a place where dead bodies are burnt. At these places you will see people bearing dead bodies on their shoulders, either to bury them or to consign them to the flames. But we have forgotten ourselves so much that although we see with our own eyes or carry dead bodies on our own shoulders, we are still not convinced that one day we have to leave the body. How grand a delusion it is! So one way is like that, and the other way is to be out of the body. If you were out of the boat, you would see the boat and the men who were identified with it all going downstream. So to see this, the Masters have said, “You must learn how to leave the body – Learn to die so that you may begin to live”. You must rise above bodyconsciousness, then you will see everything in its right perspective. So this is our condition in the body which we are carrying. The question then arises, what about our relatives? We have been brought together as a reaction of our past karmas, our give and take. When that is finished, everybody has to leave, to take his own way. This body won’t remain here with us, nor will others who come as a reaction of the past. They will also have to leave us, or we will leave them. All our possessions have also to be left here. This very body, the first companion that we get on being born into this world must be left behind. When our body must be left behind, how can all other things which have come in connection with the body go along with us? This place, the earth or manbody, is not the place to live forever. We have to leave some day, sooner or later. Very great philosophers have come to the world, Masters have come to the world. They all had a manbody and they left it. There is no exception to the rule. Unless we have got the right view, we cannot see things as they truly are. Masters say, “You have to leave this world. These things will remain here, you will go empty handed”. But still we are not convinced. To see things in their right colour, there are only two ways. One is by far sight, just as a man rowing in a boat looks to the shoals of a river, or the other way is to leave the boat. So this is the grand delusion in which we are all going down. When these things are brought home to us, then our angle of vision will change.
Why do we squeeze the blood of others? Why do we torment them? They have the same manbody as we have got. They are of the same essence of God, like us a drop of the Ocean of all Consciousness. The same Controlling Power is keeping everyone of us in the body. The highest aim is to rise into God consciousness. That will come only when you know your Self, who you are. You are not the manbody, you are dwelling in the manbody, the highest rung in all Creation. We have to make the best use of it and that is, how we can be out of it. For this purpose, Masters always advise us to rise above body consciousness. “Learn to die so that you may begin to live”. You will have the right spectacles to see through if you do this. Everything will appear in its right perspective. This is why all Masters have said, “Know Thy Self”. We are bearing the labels of the different schools of thought in which we have joined only to realize this truth. When you know your Self, then only will your attachments be cut off.
You people have come from America for one, two, three or six months. You know that you have to go back. Although you are here enjoying, still you know you have to return. If you just have that angle of vision by rising above body-consciousness, you will always be conscious in knowing that this is not your home. The Home of the soul is the Home of our Father. We are fortunate in having the manbody, in which we can go back to the Home of our True Father. This cannot be done in the lower orders of Creation. They come only to reap the reaction of what they have acted before, to reap the fruit of them. In the manbody, which we have got as a reaction of the past, we are free within certain limits to direct our steps on the right way back to God. The ABC will start when you rise above body consciousness. You will learn how to leave the body at will. Then your whole angle of vision will be changed. This is how you can be out of this grand delusion that you are in.
You are not the manbody, but are a conscious entity. You have got the intellect but are a conscious being. You have been given this manbody by the grace of God to enable you to go back to your Home. It does not mean that you have to leave the world and go to the forests. You are to remain here, pay off your debts, your give and take and find your way back to God. Relations are brought together only as a reaction of the past, to pay off their debts with love and not to be deluded, as we are now. We think that we will live here forever. This is the golden opportunity that we have got to find our way back to God. For that very purpose, we have joined various schools of thought. The badges you are wearing only relate to your body. You have got the manbody, you are conscious entities. Your true Home is one which is all Consciousness. So to find the way back to God, the first lesson is that your are under a grand delusion and must come out of it. When we are doing our practices, even then we are not conscious of them. If you do your practices accurately, you will rise above body consciousness. The body is not you. You will begin to have experience of the Beyond. You have to leave the body. This fate awaits everybody and there is no exception to the rule. But with all that, we are afraid of death. Death is only a change, just as the sun sets on one side of the world and rises on the other. Similarly, we leave this physical world and rise into the Beyond. This is a practical question, and if somebody gives you a demonstration of rising above body consciousness, you should develop it from day to day. So death is no bugbear. It is a very loving change to those who have got experience of the Beyond. For others, they dread it. Why? for two reasons. One is that they do not know how to leave the body. At the time of death we have to leave the body. If you see a dying man, you will see how much pain he has in the body. The withdrawal of the soul from the body according to a Mohammedan saint (the Master have also referred to it in their scriptures), is just like having a thorny bush put into the rectum and extracted through the mouth. The Hindu scriptures tell us that the pain one feels is as if one thousand scorpions were to sting at one time. You may have been a witness to that. Generally, people are very much in agony. This is one reason why we are afraid of death. The other reason is that we do not know where in the Beyond we have to go. Those who come to the Master are given a demonstration of how to rise above body-consciousness for a while. You will forget the world outside. Your inner eye is opened and you see into the Beyond. You are not the body. This is the first grand concession that the Master gives to you. This experience can be had only with the help of a Master. When you leave the body you will begin to understand how all this is going on under the Divine Will. The man who becomes a Conscious Co-worker of the Divine Plan never says I am doing this or that, he says it is His Will that is being done. “Thy Will be done on earth, as it is in Heaven”. The man who learns to die, to leave the body at will, gets everlasting life, never to return. All glory and beauty lie within you. The astral planes are more beautiful than the physical one. The causal plane is still more beautiful, and the spiritual planes beyond are the most beautiful of all. Those who have experience of the Beyond would naturally like to go there, but they are bound. Even the Masters are playing their role. They want to go back, but they are bound by order, they have to carry on.
This is the ABC to be learnt on the way to Spirituality. You must come out of the delusion. The practices which you are asked to do daily are only meant for that purpose. Do you leave the body at will? Do you traverse into the Beyond? Somebody should be there in the Beyond to guide you, and here also to give you a demonstration of it. He who can do this is called a Saint or Master. He never leaves you, either here or hereafter. Everyday you are given some lesson. We have to learn this lesson of how to leave the body, how to come out of this grand delusion. If you have learnt it, then I think that you will have the right perspective. The ABC starts where all philosophies end. It is a matter of seeing, of rising above body consciousness, of experiencing for one’s own self. Saint Plutarch tells us, “Those who are initiated into the Mysteries of the Beyond, their soul has the same experience of leaving the body as it has at the time of death”. The Master gives you a demonstration. He guides you outside and when you go within. It is a great blessing to have a Living Master. The Master Power never dies, but works in different human bodies. Our Master used to give an example that when one bulb is fused, another is put in. When that is fused, a third one is put in. That Light is the Master, embodied in the manbody. That never dies.
So this is the ABC that is to be learned today. We are all in a grand delusion and we must come out of it. It is not a matter only of talking, it is a practical matter of rising above body consciousness. If you rise above body consciousness every day at will, then where is death? No fear of death will remain, you will go jolly. You have come here to be with the Master, is it not so? You are jolly, I think. So similarly, we have to go to the feet of our Master, our true Master within us. This place is not for us to live in forever, we have only to make the best use of it.
St. Paul told, ‘I die daily’. How he dies daily? He rose above the plane of sences and the shackles of the mind and came up at the tenth door. Knock the door and this will be opened unto you.
Christ said the same: “Learn to die so that you may begin to live…” – Begin to live means what? You begin to realize yourself. Sofar you have not ralized what you are, who you are, from where you came, how you came and what is the purpose of human-life, nobody cared to do that sofar. This is the biggest problem. This, you may say, this is the riddle of life, the purpose of life which man has to solve. Only for that purpose man has come into the world. Christ told, ‘it is your turn to meet God, it is thy turn to meet God’.
Christ further said that it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than a man who is expanded–a wealthy man with all outward attachments. The teachings of the Masters just cut down the very stem of the whole trouble. When you rise above body consciousness, the physical ego is gone. But the astral ego, causal ego are still there. Complete humility arises only when you rise above three planes, not before. In the beginning you’ll begin to have a little humility. Even those who go to the astral plane, they’re also not free from ego.
God lives in the heart of everybody. Peace always starts from the heart in the human body. To come to know the real aim of our life we have to read the book of our own body – which means to rise above body consciousness. Whatever is written in the Holy Books comes from the human body. Man has the same virtues (qualities) as the God Power, but it can only be seen by practicing Bhakti. The inner eye can be opened, and only then the soul has the Darshan of the true Hari Mandir (Temple of God). This body is (only) made out of straw, and the Ocean of life flows through it. All the competent Saints give us the true teaching; we are the children of such a Power. Those who follow the teaching can see the Lord from within. Such souls become the co-workers of the Divine Plane, and their inner eye can see that the God Power is working through them. God Power and Guru Power is one. He Himself manifests through the human being. With the help of the Holy Light and Sound, the soul is able to have the inner Darshan of the Satguru. The soul’s whole body then is full of light by the Darshan of the God Power within. That is the reason why Saints always teach us to open our eye, and that eye lies behind (and between) our physical eyes. Once it is opened, our whole body is full of light. Therefore our first step starts only when we cross our inner curtain and we take a new birth, and we learn to die while alive by practicing Bhakti (Devotion). The souls who are doing the practice are great. The Christ Power, the God Power in them is competent to give the real life. They have explained about themselves like this: “O man! I am the bread of your life and this bread comes from heaven, and I am taking this bread myself.” If one takes this bread, he can get life forever. God is your light. He is looking after all, the poor and the rich. God is our light – God is the love of our life. Which bread is this? He gives it through Amrit Bani (Holy Sound Current). He has given us Amrit to take it from His Ocean. O man, you are still sleeping in all the attachments of this world. The Satguru’s treasury is full, and He is giving from there to His souls. The water from above is flowing, and it cannot finish during our whole life. The thirst of those who take the Amrit is quenched forever. Everything is created by Shabad. From the very beginning, there was only Shabad, with Shabad was the Satguru and Shabad is the Satguru, He has created the whole world. You have Shabad in you, it comes from within. This Shabad is the fresh food for our life which comes through the flow of (His) ocean to the soul. Satguru Shabad is the light of the world. He has taught us the truth. We have to overcome jealousy, because due to it, our way gets closed. Our Lord is the one who controls our body, so He can take us to our Father’s Home. He has given us nice houses, good cars and other things to travel, but they are all limited to this earth, to carry our body. O man, the inner traveller does not need these cars, they are all only for here. Only the hardship of NAAM and good actions and an equipoise state will go along with us. So I pray for a good and happy New Year. Our Lord, our Satguru may bless everybody. How shall we celebrate this day? We should try to understand our great Masters and their teaching, as they told us how we can rise above body consciousness and how our inner eye can be opened, and how we can see that God is born within us. That Lord is our Light, and He is the inner way to our eternal home. Happiness (Master’s physical form) always passes like a dream. It’s the house of peace He gives us, and He moistures it so that the field may always remain greenish. We will only get the true life when we reach the true Home of our Father. I again pray that this year by the Grace of Master should pass peacefully and with His happiness.

Also Guru Nanak said, “Die a hundred times a day.”
At the time of death you withdraw from the body, you reach at the seat of the soul, withdraw through the third eye and then you enter into the heaven. But that is the experience, which happens at the time of death. And it is further said: “ If thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.” Your eyes can only be single when you withdraw from all these lower extremities … and pass through it. You must have that experience. And … you must rise above the cause and affect of the world. So far you are in the three worlds, you are not reborn.

Master Saints never show any miracles to a disciple except in rare cases due to special circumstances. Miracles are in accordance with the laws of nature but are nevertheless terrible entangling webs, detrimental to the highest ideals of man in his approach to Almighty God. It is a subject that an ordinary man would not care to study, for the simple reason that it requires immense self-control and training of the mind, with restrictions that he would not like to tolerate or pursue. The miraculous powers achieved after a lengthy period of time are instrumental in doing both good and harm, and as they are utilized more for harm than anything else, they are termed as a disease by all truly spiritual persons. The Masters are in possession of Supreme Power, but their mission is sacred. A disciple whose inner vision has been opened sees any number of miracles at each step. To hesitate to believe in a Master without seeing miracles is as foolish as a refusal to believe that a certain person is a multi-millionaire unless he shows us his money. He may have all his money deposited in a bank and wishes to spend it in the wy that he chooses, without caring for public applause or approval. Out of an audience of several thousands watching a magician perform his tricks, only a very small number would thereby be induced to learn the art. Those who are anxious to see miracles are not true seekers.
Today the world is crying out for a better understanding, for peace and freedom from conflict. This Science of self-analysis that reveals the brotherhood of man and the fatherhood of God is the remedy which can reconstruct a healthy culture, and propagate harmony between man and man. He who claims to love the invisible God but has no regard or love for his visible fellow man is lost indeed. To love, revere and feel grateful to our fellow man is to love and revere God. So too, the love for the visible Master, our closest connecting link with God, is in reality love for the Supreme Father. We should therefore try to measure the depth of God’s mercy and grace through a Master Saint, who is God’s visible representative. It has spirituality as its end and is not idolatry. The atmosphere in which such a genuine Master moves is charged with currents of peace and love which affect those who come into contact with Him. Even letters written by or on behalf of Him carry currents of ecstasy that influence the innermost recesses of the heart.
Guru precedes God. Such a person was Master Hazur Baba Sawan Singh Ji Maharaj, who remained with His disciples for a great number of years and now, even after He has left the body, still watches over His loved ones and also those who contacted Him once with love and sincerity in their hearts. Love knows no law, and He is still appearing in His Radiant Form, even on lower spiritual planes, for their sake. Not one, but hundreds can testify to what ignorant people would call an illusion. On the physical plane, He is still showering His blessings through His medium at Ruhani Satsang,5 Sawan Ashram, who now in turn guides men in all spiritual matters. One bulb is fused and is replaced by another. The same Power works and the same light now shines from a new bulb. All who approach the Master get positive experiences. Anybody who wishes to avail himself of such a golden opportunity has only to contact the Master and his wishes will be fulfilled, his heart will overflow with happiness, and his weary shoulders will be relieved of their burden of cares and worries.
Note: Ruhani Satsang was the organisation founded by Sant Kirpal Singh at the request of His Master Baba Sawan Singh with its headquarters in Sawan Ashram in Delhi where Sant Kirpal Singh lived and worked.
“Love knows no law” – these words of Sant Kirpal Singh describe the special way the Almighty Godpower is working. And He speaks with overflowing love in the following words as well: “In times of calamity, the Father Himself comes to rescue of His children.”
This brochure repeatedly tells of a “living Master“, whom one has to meet while he lives in this world. This refers to the law of the Iron Age, in which it was destined by the Highest Power that for man’s guidance and spiritual development always one Master succeeded another.
But nowadays, in this special time of change from the Iron to the Golden Age, Sant Kirpal Singh came with the competency of the Almighty Power, which works directly and independently. This Power is not bound to the physical body, but is capable of continuing the work even after having left the body. If this is the case, the outer work of a physical Master is not needed.
With that said Sant Kirpal Singh gave special commandments for His further Mission to His devoted disciples Dr. Harbhajan Singh and his wife, Biji Surinder Kaur. He guaranteed that for the time coming He Himself will be responsible for the inner work and conscious people or Gurmukhs (developed disciples) will take on the task to explain the theory and to give a practical example for a spiritual life.
It is still on Him alone to link the soul with the Godpower, to give inner guidance and to wind up the karma of the disciples. Sant Kirpal Singh Himself in the book “Godman” (Chapter 4, page 38) explained: “After His passing away one may derive benefit form the Satsang conducted by a Gurmukh who is carrying on the duties of Guru, and may consult him in case he has some difficulty. It is, however, of the utmost importance that the Master is not to be changed on any account. Loyalty to the Master who has initiated the spirit and whom the spirit has pledged his troth demands the recognition that the Master is competent to impart further guidance and instructions, even when He is working on the spiritual plane after having left the physical world.”
Sant Kirpal Singh commissioned His Gurmukhs Dr. Harbhajan Singh and Biji Surinder Kaur to carry on His Mission and to build up Kirpal Sagar. The project Kirpal Sagar, located in the north of India, is a place open to all people irrespective of caste, color, creed or nationality. The aim of its manifold activities is to form a foundation for the integral development of man – physically, socially, ethically and spiritually – and to enable him to attain Selfknowledge and God-knowledge. Sant Kirpal Singh summed up the basic principles in six words as a guide-line for everybody: “BE GOOD – DO GOOD – BE ONE”

Before Sant Kirpal Singh left His body, He wrote in His last circular letter, dated 15 May 1974:
“The campaign of Unity of Man will neither be tagged with Ruhani Satsang nor with any other similar organization. The enthusiasm of its admirers will be the real force working behind the campaign.”
He based the movement Unity of Man on practical spirituality, in which everyone is striving to develop themselves constantly, to serve God in every human being and to work for the spreading of Sant Kirpal Singh’s Mission all over the world. Dr. Harbhajan Singh told concerning this, “The more you live for others, and serve them, the more you are also developed”.
Whoever searches for Self-knowledge and God-knowledge will find the valuable treasure of spiritual knowledge in this brochure and according to the law of demand and supply which works at every time it is possible today as well to attain what Sant Kirpal Singh is speaking of therein.

Peace and harmony in your heart
In the physical body, two main currents are working that control life: one a motor current (breathing or prana) and the other a sensory current, which may also be called attention or surat. The Masters ignore the former so that the breathing is not interfered with and the life process goes on. The sensory current ramifies throughout the entire body, but its main centre lies between and behind the two eyebrows, along with the mind. We have to withdraw the sensory current or spirit to its centre.
The mind will not allow man to have knowledge of the soul. Its nature is to seek pleasure and its constant fluctuations are difficult to subdue. Attuning one’s self with the internal sound current is the best way to calm the mind and practice concentration. It does not matter what school of thought or society a man may belong to. He has not to convert himself and can remain where he is. There are no hard and fast rules, no rituals, no ceremonies, no pomp and show, no offering of gifts, not even of flowers. All that a disciple has to do is to enter inside and henceforth consider the body as his laboratory. With regard to the theory, he has to understand the following, which is briefly the pith of what he will hear at Satsangs:
1) The Master is not the body, He is the Power functioning through the body and uses it to teach and guide man in much the same way as a spirit uses a medium. Only in bodily form will the disciple be able to recognize his Master in the higher regions and here on earth.
2) The Master is Shabd, Word, Nad, etc., all of which refer to the God-into-expression Power of light and sound principle. By having contact with this Power, man is led back to his true home.
3) For the sake of those who are disillusioned with life, and who yearn for permanent happiness and peace away from the world and its worries, the Word assumes a body to afford them solace. The Bible says, “Word was made flesh and dwelt amongst us.” Once a disciple contacts this Word (which is done at the time of Initiation by the Master), the audible form of this Word resides within him every moment of the day and night and never leaves him – not even after the end of man’s physical existence on earth. It will go with him and stay with him until he achieves the final goal. The Word is also known as the voice of God or the sound current, and is the Life impulse given by the Master at the time of Initiation. It may be heard as a sound coming from a distance and gradually develops into such sweetness that no music on earth can excel it. It is the Water of Life, the Spring of Immortality, the Elixir of Life, the Nectar of Spirituality, etc., that is spoken of in Holy Books.
4) Man has an inner eye with which he can see within himself all the higher regions when the veil is rent asunder by a competent living Master. In this state he remains perfectly conscious and undergoes amazing experiences. To ascend into the higher regions without a competent Master is fraught with dangers.
The repetition of the Holy Names is given to the disciple at the time of Initiation as a guard against all dangers. It acts also as a password to all spiritual planes, gives strength and sustenance to the body and mind during trouble and afflictions, brings the soul nearer to the Master, is instrumental in achieving concentration, and imparts many other diverse powers. Simran taught by a so-called master is just a bunch of words. But these very words become electrified when charged with the attention and grace of a real Master.
Initiation commences with the explanation and description of inner spiritual regions and the way in which the path is to be pursued. The opening of the inner vision to see the inner regions, with their distinct heavenly lights, together with the contact with the divine link or sound current, constitutes the practical side of Initiation. Daily practice of these, combined with Simran, is meditation. In addition to this, the Master gives instructions on pure and simple living, the need of devoting regular time to the practices, and other words of sound advice. The whole ceremony takes from two to three hours. Diaries of one’s spiritual progress must be kept and the mistakes of old and new disciples are corrected from time to time to insure progress.

The Criterion for Judging a True Master
Do not judge a master by his external appearance, genealogical descent, rich or poor attire, country of origin, how he talks, eats or the position he holds, the number of books that he is the author of, or by what people say about him. First receive the inner experience he promises; then judge from that elevated angle of vision. Self-experience is the criterion for judging a genuine Master. Any living person who sees things from a spiritual level – man and his embarrassments, difficulties and helplessness – and who has studied the problems confronting humanity, can provide their solutions, and is also able to correct and guide man visibly and invisibly, morally and spiritually, in theory as well as in practice – only such a person is fit to take the responsible position of a Master. Blessed are those who experience a stirring emotion of happiness and longing in their hearts on hearing the news that such a Master exists and is near.
Spirituality is a science simpler and easier than other sciences. Man has not to exert except in moulding himself ethically and morally to the climax of love, sincerity and humility, which will produce the necessary state of receptivity in him. Everything else is in the hands of the Master. Again, a movement, no matter how spiritual it may appear to be on the surface, should not be judged by the number of followers that it has. A good speaker can attract crowds anywhere, yet there may not be anything material or convincing in his speech. Spirituality is not the exclusive possession of any family or place, but it is like a scented flower that grows wherever nature has ordained, around which the bees gather from far and wide to sip its nectar. Masters do not rush after glory of self, although they certainly deserve such glory. Even in ordinary talks, they will be heard to say, “Oh, it is all the grace of my Master. It is none of my doing. My Master deserves all the praise and credit.” This humility places them far above the low level of egoism found in this world.
Masters have come in all ages to offer this natural science to man. Only those who are discontented with this world rush to them. Others, to whom worldly attractions, pleasures and luxuries are dear, turn their backs. Those in whose hearts all noble sentiments are dead not only put all possible obstacles in the way of the Saints, but also subject them to various kinds of tortures, as a study of the lives of Jesus, Guru Nanak, Kabir and others will show. Masters have come in the past, are existing today, and will continue to come in the future for the spiritual benefit of man. To suppose and accept that spirituality has become the sole prerogative of any religion after the passing of the master on whose teachings it is based, and that sacred books are the only guide, shows the thoughtlessness of man.
How can we distinguish between a genuine and a false master? There is in fact no such testing stone or magical formula except that of self-experience, for discriminating right from wrong, truth from falsehood, and reality from unreality. Even in the time of Emperor Janak (the father of Sita of the Ramayana) who was prepared to pay a big fee for the theoretical knowledge of this science, only one, Yagyavalkya, out of all the Rishis, Yogis and Munis in India, was able to do so and won the prize. Yagyavalkya however, had the moral courage to admit, “Gargi,3 I know the theory only but have no personal experience of it.” On a second occasion, Emperor Janak proclaimed that he wanted a practical experience of this science on a certain date, and that in a very short time too, not exceeding the time taken to straddle a horse and put each foot in its stirrup. Great Yogis and Rishis throughout the length and breadth of India were invited, but at the appointed time only one person stepped forward to accept the challenge. This was a hunchback named Ashtavakra, who had eight humps in his body. The audience, taking him for a maniac, laughed aloud at his appearance. Ashtavakra said, “How can you expect to get spiritual experience from these cobblers you have collected, who have eyes only for the skin of the body but cannot see within?” The experience was duly given to the Emperor within the allotted time. The point to consider is that at the time when spirituality was thriving, only one person came forward to accept the challenge. In these times then, when materialism is on the increase, we do not find competent Masters growing like mushrooms. So search we must, not allowing false propaganda, the testimony of others, blind faith, the promise of future happiness, and our regard for position, wealth and pleasure, to lead us astray. When such personalities come, they are competent to give life to millions of people who go to them. They are the children of light, and give light to all humanity.
Blind faith is one of the main obstacles to overcome. What we simply listen to, read, or follow without investigating as to what and where it will lead to, is blind faith. If one is careless and forgets the ends while following the means, so that he does not see whether he is nearing the end or not, it is still blind faith. When one goes to a Master and listens attentively to the explanations given by him on the subject of gaining Self-Knowledge by self-analysis, duly supported by one or more quotations from the valuable sayings of various Saints, he is intellectually convinced to tread the path as an experimental measure and act up to what the Master says with faith for the time being. This is the first stepping-stone to learn about reality. When he has the first-hand experience, of whatever degree it may be, he is convinced and progresses from day to day. Today man listens to talks, lectures and sermons, accepts and believes these all his life, and takes for granted that he has been placed firmly on the way to salvation. But when death comes with all its sufferings, pangs of separation, and fears of the unknown, he realizes his mistake. Man’s life-long habit of attachment to his body occupies all his thoughts, while friends, doctors, relatives and priests stand by helpless and despairing.
It is here that the science of Para Vidya is of great help to us. The soul’s withdrawal from the body is greatly eased and the Master appears to receive and guide it further in the beyond. Death is to such a one the happiest of events and like marriage, is the union with the Beloved. He has already visited and convinced himself of the superiority of the higher regions and traverses the familiar territory without fear. My Master, Hazur Baba Sawan Singh Ji, when impressing the need of spiritual practices on His disciples, used to say to them, “Go and see a disciple dying to become convinced.” Saints believe in salvation during one’s lifetime and not in salvation after death. This is indeed a simple and easy science, and the disciple should never rest content with his Initiation without spiritual experience. He should then devote regular time to the spiritual practices, and the Master must be regularly informed of his progress. He should constantly seek the guidance of his Master personally or by letter, without entertaining thoughts that he is bothering Him. The Master knows by intuition how each disciple is faring and can remove most of his difficulties by thought transference or other means, but He wishes any difficulties in progress to be brought to His notice in writing.
The ancient path of Surat Shabd Yoga or Para Vidya is one that can be followed by men, women and children of all ages without any difficulty, unlike other ways which involve complicated strenuous exercises and control of the breath. These, at the most, lead to a slight control over the self and a few paltry powers. The latter methods also require a strong physique and a rich diet. As such, they are condemned by the Masters as unsuited to this age, and as involving physical dangers to the body.

Perhaps it will not be out of place to explain here the meaning of the term “spirituality,” which is often confused with blind faith in sacred books, a display of miracles, psychic phenomena, or yogic powers. Spirituality is an inner experience and its alphabet begins where all philosophy and yoga practices end. It is the experience of the soul. When one says, “I am the body,” it is a feeling based on the intellect and is defined as ignorance. When he says, “I am not the body, I am an awakened soul,” it is learnt knowledge or theory only; but when he gets an actual experience of the soul by self-analysis and contacts the Overself, it is called spirituality. The first practical lesson commences when there is a complete withdrawal from the physical body through the kindness of a practical Master. No one can withdraw and separate himself from the physical body unaided. If anyone claims otherwise and thinks that he can, he but deceives himself. All attempts without the assistance of a Master, who alone is qualified to impart this experience, will end in failure. Masters come to distribute this treasure of spiritual blessings to seekers after truth.
Spirituality cannot be bought or taught, but it can be caught by contact with spiritual people. Moreover, nature’s gifts such as air, water, light, etc., are free. Spirituality is also nature’s gift and is also given free by the Masters. Likewise, spirituality cannot be acquired from books, which is a fact all sacred scriptures uphold. Books are a valuable record of the inner experiences of others in spirituality. They fill up gaps in history and contain messages from past Masters, which help us to verify the facts revealed by a living Master, thus confirming our faith in the science. Man is confused by the various translations, interpretations and expositions, each different from the other, which instead of relieving his mind, tend rather to bewilder and confuse him. His egoism too has created hundreds of religious circles, whose aim is aloofness and narrow orthodoxy instead of love, and insularity instead of integration. Torn between conflicting emotions, men develop hatred and think of war.
For an understanding of the science of the Masters, we attend Satsang, where the majority of our doubts are cleared. Direct answers from the Master will help to remove any remaining doubts. All questions receive the same calm consideration and no arguments are offered. Rich or poor, high or low, all receive equal attention in the same manner as a doctor should attend to the sick. A true Master views a man’s rights and wrongs as clearly as one sees the contents of a glass jar, but He reveals nothing. Sitting before Him, even those who do not understand His language are benefited, just as one in a perfumer’s shop enjoys the smell of sweet scents. The Master showers blessings through His looks, which the eager ones catch. His eyes are a wonderful spray of love.

Preliminary Qualifications for an Aspirant
Just as in any other science, certain preliminary qualifications are required before much progress can be made. Married life, hard work, or a poor environment are no bar. It does not count in your favour that you may hold a high position or possess immense wealth. Neither does membership in a particular faith serve as a recommendation. Wherever he may be, a man must strive for nobility of character, self-control and purity of heart. Purity of heart in thought, word, and deed, is essential. “Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.” An ethical life is a stepping stone to spirituality, but spirituality, however, is not just ethical living. This we must always bear in mind.
We can divide man’s life into (i) diet, and (ii) his dealings with others. With regard to diet, vegetarianism and abstinence from alcohol and drugs are essential. ”Thou shalt not kill” and “Live and let live” should be our principles in life. The body is the temple of God and is a sacred place. We are not to neglect or abuse it, but should take the best possible care to properly maintain it. All intoxicants are also to be avoided as they make us morbid and of shaky consciousness. With regard to our dealings with others, we should sow the seed of kindness in order to reap its fruit. Love and humility are most necessary. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” ”Love, and all blessing shall be added unto you.” “Love thine enemy, and do good to them that despitefully use you.” God is immanent in every form and whoever loves God, must love God’s creation. To love God is to love all humanity. We should also earn our living by the sweat of our brow and share with others. These are not empty sayings, but very wise and sound advice.
Karma (Actions and Deeds)
Each thought, each word and each deed has to be accounted for and compensated for in nature. Every cause has an effect and every action brings about a reaction. Uproot the cause and the effect disappears. This has been done by the Masters who have transcended these laws, but all others are bound by the bonds of Karma, which is the root cause of physical existence and the clever device of nature to maintain this existence. The law of Karma sees to it that we are paid an eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth, in the shape of joy or suffering. It is the goading whip in the hidden hands of nature. The mind contracts Karma, puts a covering on the soul and rules the body through the organs and the senses. Although it is the soul that imparts strength to the mind, the latter has assumed sovereignty and is governing the soul instead. Control of the mind, therefore, is the first step to spirituality. Victory over the mind is victory over the world. Even accomplished yogis and mystics who can transcend to relatively high spiritual realms are not left untouched by the hand of Karma.
Saints classify Karmas into three distinct groups, as follows:
- (i) Sanchit (stored)
Good or bad deeds that stand to our account as earned and contracted in all previous bodies of the order of creation, counting from the day of the first appearance of life on earth. Alas! Man knows nothing about them or their extent.
- (ii) Prarabdha (Fate or Destiny)
The result and effect of which has brought man into his present body and has to be paid off in this life. The reactions of these Karmas come to us unexpectedly and unperceived and we have no control over them whatsoever. Good or bad, we have to tolerate or bear this Karma laughing or weeping, as it happens to suit us.
- (iii) Kriyaman (Account of our actions and deeds in the present body)
This is distinct from the above mentioned two groups because here man is free to do exactly as he pleases, within certain limits. Knowingly or unknowingly, deeds committed and coming under this heading bear fruit. The result of some of these we reap before we die and the residue is transferred to the Sanchit storehouse.
Karma is the cause of rebirth and each birth is in turn followed by death. Thus the cycle of enjoyment and suffering, which are concomitants of birth and death, continues. “As you think, so you become,” is an unalterable law of nature, owing to which this universe exists. No amount of integrity or genius can absolve a man so long as there is the slightest trace of Karma. Ignorance of the law is no excuse, and though there may be some concession or relaxation with man-made laws under special circumstances, there is no such allowance made for this in nature’s laws. Prayer, confession and atonement may give temporary mental relief but they cannot overcome Karma. All Karma must be wiped out completely before permanent salvation can be had.
Disturbed by these facts, man seeks solace in deep pious doctrines, or when he comes to know that both good and bad deeds are fetters – one of gold, the other of iron – he turns to renunciation. Different faiths promise relief but he soon finds out that this is only temporary. How then does a Master approach this problem? At the time of Initiation, the Master begins the process of winding up all Karmas of the initiate. He gives him a contact with the sound current, by practicing which the Sanchit account is burnt away. The process is similar to putting a handful of seeds in a pan and placing them on a fire, which causes the seeds to puff up and lose their property of growing again. Then the Kriyaman account is dealt with. After warning his disciples to guard against opening any new account of bad deeds, the Master grants a general clemency in respect of past deeds, part of which the disciple has already settled in this life up to the time of Initiation. He is enjoined to lead a clean life and to weed out all imperfections in him by self-introspection from day to day. The Prarabdha Karma is not touched by Saints because this is the cause of the physical body, which would vanish due to the interference with nature’s laws. Thus a very small amount of Karma now remains to be tolerated in the physical body for the remaining years of the disciple’s life, but even this is softened by the grace of the Master.
The law of grace works wonders and a devotee who, out of loving devotion, reposes all his hopes in the Master, passes off unscathed from the pinching effects of the reactions of past Karmas. In moments of misery, worry and trouble, the Master is our refuge. He acts unperceived at any distance. Just as a mother of a sick child holds the child securely in her lap during an operation so that it does not feel any pain, so too the Master holds us in his loving embrace. Out of their abundance of sympathy, love and kindness, the Saints at times take upon their own shoulders some Karmic sufferings of their disciples through the law of sympathy. There is no court of trial after death for a devoted disciple. The Master is all in all for him.
Why does a Master Saint take all this on Himself? Because He inherits His merciful nature from God above, who commissions Him to personally distribute this treasure of mercy. Thus the Master is honoured like God. Sant Mat has volumes of books written in praise of the Masters, and if just as many books were to be written, it would hardly do justice to the vastness of their love and kindness.
Time casts its heavy shadow over man. He has to work hard to keep pace with the changing times. So deeply is he absorbed in his external needs and desires that he forgets all about contentment, sympathy and love. Entangled and surrounded by the “deadly five” – lust, anger, greed, attachment and vanity – he stumbles and cries out to the Unseen for help. Heaven’s mercy is stirred and as times stiffen, the Almighty extends His help through the Masters more and more lavishly. Such is the case in this Kali Yuga – the Iron Age.
It is indeed very hard to believe that anyone can be above the five passions mentioned above, and that he can enter the Kingdom of Heaven during his lifetime. All mankind is under the control of these five and only a Master can save a man from their clutches. We all demand reliable proof before committing ourselves, and this is given by a Master in the shape of an experience of the life impulse or Naam (the Word) and some inner vision. Contact with a Master is essential. Those who keep aloof and depend on themselves or rely on tradition and priests – equally ignorant as themselves – are deprived of contact with this Power; and as the saying goes, “When the blind leads the blind, both fall into the ditch”.
Indifference, non-acceptance or disbelief will not be to our advantage when nature enforces its universal ordinance – death. Our position will be that of a pigeon who, on seeing a cat approaching, shuts its eyes and believes that the cat cannot then molest it; but in a few seconds the poor bird is in the powerful jaws of the cat. It is then too late to think of escape. So be alert while there is yet time!

Life Beyond Death
Saints say that nature has designed man to leave his physical body at will, transcend to higher planes, and then return to the body. They help each aspirant personally and each receives a practical experience, however little it may be, during the very first sitting at the time of Initiation. A person who is competent to give a man this personal experience of withdrawal or separation (temporary) from the body, and who can thus put him on the way back to God, is a genuine Master, Saint, or Satguru. The heads of different religious organizations were intended to do just this, but we may judge for ourselves their efficacy today.
The first-hand experience we receive, through the kindness of a real Saint, is in itself the solution to the problem of death. According to the Bible, “Unless you are born anew, you cannot enter into the Kingdom of God.” So to be born anew is to leave one’s body and enter into the beyond – a transition from the physical to the astral plane. Some day we have to leave this temporary structure which, like a building of bricks and mortar, deteriorates with time. There is no appeal to the laws of nature against the “death sentence.” We fear death because of the agony and suffering which it brings, and also because of the uncertainty that lies ahead in the beyond. We fear illness because it brings us near death’s door; so we struggle to live though we know that our end is certain. No soothing words from doctors, friends, relatives or priests can bring peace and comfort to our minds at the time that nature’s destructive process commences. This is the natural course of things and we cannot deceive nature.
What then is the remedy? There is only one way out of this abyss of despair: to adopt and accustom ourselves, during our lifetime, to nature’s process of the withdrawal of the spirit current from the body, while still in a conscious state. This may be done with the help of a Master, and may be accomplished without any suffering or trouble whatever. This is not only a possibility but is a remarkable fact. Our joy will know no bounds when we come into possession of the secret that has baffled man for so many centuries. We become supermen, having possession of a key to peace and heaven, the life of which we had till then only read about in sacred scriptures. Arise, therefore, and awake! before it is too late to put this science into practice. If we observe closely the process of death in a dying man, we see the pupils of his eyes turn upwards a little (afterwards they may return to normal) and then he becomes senseless. But when they draw upwards too much, he dies. Life ebbs out via the root of the eyes and becomes disconnected from the ties of the physical body and the sense organs. Knowledge of this process and the method by which we may travel this way during our very lifetime is the solution to the problem of death. No physical exercises are necessary; there are no drugs to swallow and no blind faith to cultivate. The mystery of life and death is solved easily with the help of a Master Saint, who will give you an experience of the process and put you on the highway to the inner realms. Even when acting indirectly through an authorized agent, He still remains the responsible Power. Distance is immaterial to the Masters.
What is there to be gained by this process? This cannot be described in words. At the time of Initiation, the aspirant sees the real light within him, whereas normally the inner eye is covered by a thick veil of darkness. He then realizes that the tradition of the lighted candle found in churches and temples is to remind him of the Divine Light of Heaven within. This light grows to the radiance of several suns put together as he advances on the way. He understands that the unceasing internal sound he contacts within is the divine link called “Word” by Christ, Kalma and Nida-i-Asmani in the Koran, Nad in the Vedas, Udgit in the Upanishads, Sarosha by the Zoroastrians, and Naam and Shabd by the Saints and Masters. In time, he meets the Master within, talks to Him face to face, and is henceforth certain of His grace, guidance and protection wherever he may go, even to the other end of the world. With such evident proofs before him, he is now confident of himself and of the science. Only then can he be called a theist in the true sense of the word, and can smile at those who talk of religion as a fool’s paradise, a phantom conjured up by crafty priests, and the opium of the masses. He has found a sure ingress through the doorway of heaven in this life, and is on the threshold of viewing, both internally and externally, the secrets of nature. He is truly “knocking at the door of heaven” or “tapping inside.” Words of opposition cannot shake his faith in the science as the Master guides him onward. Death becomes a voluntary process. Past, present and future merge into one, and he grasps the incontestable truth, the essence of being, in the palm of his hand. Liberated from the body, which now appears as a husk without the kernel, he knows that he is soul, an inseparable part of the Eternal Spirit, and so he presses onward to his original source. The world appears as a dream to him, but under the instructions from his Master, he returns to his mundane life, wise and fearless in the discharge of his duties.

The Teachings of the Masters (Man-making)
A man, according to the Science of Para-Vidya, is not entitled to be called a man in the true sense of the word, unless he has full knowledge, both theoretical and practical, of his distinguished position in Creation, his several component parts – body, mind and soul – in order of comparative importance, and of his relationship to the Unseen Power, called God, which is to be achieved while he is living on this earth. He who does not understand this much has not even been introduced to the first lesson and is yet to begin the Alphabet of Man The Saints, therefore, impress upon us the need for ‘Man-making’.
When scientifically observed facts drawn from practice and experiment are explained verbally to a gathering by a Master Saint, it is called Satsang (external). This Satsang constitutes the theoretical side of the teachings; whereas the actual demonstration given to develop and achieve inner advancement is the practical part, called meditation or Satsang (internal). Conscientious practice brings fruit within days or weeks and it is not necessary to wait years for results, though progress also depends to some extent on one’s past background. A true Master gives a first-hand inner experience at the very first sitting. When the practical side is neglected due to lack of firmness or determination, carelessness or pressure of circumstances, scholars of many religious schools dwell more and more upon theory alone. The decline of the science then commences and man finds no solace. This is usually the case when a master leaves the body. Adequate provision however is made for the revival of this science in every age, when both the positive and negative powers commence their rounds again: the former through the agency of Master-souls, while the latter works through persons – so-called masters – who lack practical experience or are lost in theoretical disputations. Master-souls, though quite ordinary men in appearance, are a great deal more. Just as it is difficult for us to judge a scientist, a doctor or an engineer until they speak out or display their skill and knowledge, so too we cannot recognize the knowledge and authority of a Master until we have experienced the Divine Power working through Him.
In this science there is no secrecy or mystery. The objective is constructive and beneficial to all, and so the Saints have torn aside the curtain of secrecy which usually covers mystic teachings to make them available to each and every one who calls. There is an Unseen Power working through the Saints. Why this Power prefers to remain concealed from the human eye is a question to be asked directly by contacting the human pole through whom this Power is working. This is the only medium of approach to this Power. If we wish to use electric energy we must go to a switch or pole which will put us in contact with the powerhouse. The Unseen Power may be called a Sea of Love. When we wish to bathe in the sea, we go to the edge where the shallow waters begin and then say that we have bathed in the sea. Thus, to experience this Power and to derive benefit from it, we must go to the only source of contact – a Master Saint.

Present Fate of Various Beliefs and Faiths
The dictionary defines mat as wisdom; but the colloquial meaning of the term is a sect or faith, a group of people holding certain opinions or beliefs in common. Such beliefs and opinions, however, based on stray knowledge and teachings, are not sufficient without the support of personal experience; and therefore the seeker is led astray by mere empty words. Many societies, faiths, and other religious circles have only a legacy of books, beliefs and theories to offer those who thirst after spirituality. They conceal their shortcomings and deficiencies behind a screen of warm welcome, an outpouring of technique and terminology, and the liberal use of sayings and quotations from the enormous mass of literature on the market today. Propaganda and acting and posing have taken the place of practical spirituality, with the result that the deluded public is being repelled from sacred books and thoughts of God. Atheism therefore is on the increase.
To believe in a thing or fact without troubling to investigate it does not in any way do credit to an intelligent man. On the contrary, it reflects adversely on his ignorance or credulity. Any belief not based on personal experience and verification of the facts has little value. The modern man wants a well-defined, clear cut science, capable of verification by his own experience and giving concrete results. We should therefore try to see and hear with our own eyes and ears rather than with the eyes and ears of others.
Man is composed of body, mind (intellect) and soul. We are extremely careful to develop ourselves physically and mentally, but understand very little about the soul, which is the power ruling both the body and the mind. Physical joys are not lasting, and there are limitations of body and mind that we cannot ignore; so we must search for the perennial source of joy and peace within ourselves. Self-analysis is the first step in this direction. Many doubts assail our minds at this stage. There is an Omnipotent Power called God, believed in, worshiped and talked about by most people. Can we know more about Him? Can we see Him and talk to Him? There is a definite and clear reply to these questions; the Master in a few brief words explains, “Yes, we can see and speak to Him; that is, if we become as exalted as He is said to be.” Masters say “Yes,” and we do not have to wait until death comes, but we can experience it right now. This is in consonance with laws of nature of which we have as yet no knowledge worth the name. All around us we see and feel that everything from the tiny atom to the mighty universe is governed by a law of nature. So, to the profound thinker, there is nothing chaotic, haphazard or uncertain about this universe and the laws which govern it. To gain any objective, there is a law of nature, a principle and method involved for checking, testing and weighing the result of our endeavours. So it is too in this science of nature, and similar methods can be traced in all religious scriptures by any careful student, though expressed in different words and various languages. We wish to enter the Kingdom of God; “but how?” we ask ourselves. “With the help and guidance of one who has himself entered and can guide us there,” is the simple reply from the Masters. “Is it possible?” “It is a knowledge which is as exact and sure as two and two make four,” is again their reply. It is not enough to be content with Holy Books and the singing of praises and hymns. We must strive for the same degree of advancement as the authors of the talks and knowledge recorded in these books achieved. Their experience must become our experience, for “what a man has done, a man can do”; of course, with proper help and guidance. We should stop at nothing short of this.
“We have hardly a dim spark of love for Him; will it help to cherish a hope?” is another question asked, to which the Saints reply, “It is sufficient to make you eligible for the Highest science of approach to Him.” This is a pleasing ray of hope. Oh! if this small spark could be kindled into a flame! Again, we say, “Jesus and other great Masters spoke so lovingly of Him, but we are sinners and there may not be much hope for us in this age.” The Masters’ soothing reply is, “No matter if you are the worst of sinners, stop where you are. There is hope for everybody, even in this crucial age.” Ages ago, nature provided for us materially and spiritually. Today the same unchangeable law is operating and will continue to do so in the future. There is food for the hungry and water for the thirsty. Nature’s inexorable and eternal law of demand and supply always works. It is only through a living Master that we can contact the Almighty God within us. In Sant Mat, contemplation of objects or images is not advised, as this is harmful to progress. Photographs of the Masters are for remembrance and recognition only, and on no account should we become attached to such external practices.

What ist the greatest study of man? Is it theology? I would say no. Is it knowing the law of Blackstone and other great men who came in the past? Even then the answer will be no. Is it the study of works of men like Shakespeare, Miltion, Dickens, Burns? No. Is it occultism or Buddhism or Christianity or Sikhism or any other social religion that we may study? Are such works the greatest aim of man’s study? Again I would say that the answer is no. Why?
If you become conversant with all the scriptures left by the Masters, what do they speak of? “Man, know thyself.” So, knowing man, both his outer and inner aspects, is the greatest study for us. The greatest study of man is man.

Since the beginning of creation, when the first flicker of self-awakening dawned on man, his attention has been more and more concerned with the problem of his own worldly existence and the investigation into the cause and source of all creation. For ages he has probed and queried in vain; but now at last his increasing thirst for knowledge is turning him to study the results achieved by others in the field. Ancient and modern sages asked, “What is that, the knowledge of which makes everything else known?” and in the same breath replied, “Knowledge of the higher self – the true man.” So the supreme knowledge is that which deals both in theory and practice with man’s true nature and his relation to God. It is in fact a natural science without hypothesis, subject neither to change nor time.
In ancient India it was called “Para Vidya” (science of realized truth or science of the beyond), and different denominations sprang up to interpret this knowledge. The term “Apra Vidya,” standing for preparation for achieving the knowledge of Para Vidya, was then introduced. This preparation consists of following an ethical and moral life, and the practice of concentration or meditation (in so many ways), both being indispensable for spiritual development. Man is constantly changing or introducing new names and terminologies to describe this science. The Masters were called “Sant,” and the nature of knowledge “Mat,” thus giving us the term “Sant Mat,” which is at present mostly used to name the Path of the Masters. Other terms, such as Shabd Yoga, Surat Shabd Yoga, Sehaj Yoga, are also used to describe the same science. In the Sanskrit language, the word “Sant” means a Master of the Highest Order; and “Mat” is a confirmed opinion or statement made by an adept after personal experience. The foundation of this science therefore is the result of critical study, minute investigation, and the life-long personal verification of facts based on practical experience of the Self in man. This experience of the Self is something that a competent Master is prepared to give to each individual who approaches him. Sant Mat, therefore, is the teaching, system, and path of the Saints.
The Masters do not attach any importance to names, designations, or the fact that many religious sects, groups and circles have claimed this science as their own and named it after their leaders or founders. They look upon these groups as schools where man – the noblest being in creation – can study with other men as children of one and the same Almighty Father. A Master (also called Sant Satguru) has complete mastery of both theory and practice, and is competent to impart both knowledge and experience to all sincere seekers after truth, without any distinction whatever of colour, caste or creed. Any man or woman, whether rich or poor, young or old, sage or sinner, learned or unlearned, who is able to grasp the theory of the science has a right to acquire this knowledge.

Spirituality – what it is
Manbody is the highest in all creation. It is an golden opportunity we have got, because in this manbody alone we can know God. And to know God we have to know ourselves first. Because God cannot be known by the outgoing faculties, by the mind or intellect. With the intellect we only try to grasp certain things. It is the soul alone that can know the oversoul, because soul is of the same essence as that of God. God is All-Consciousness and our soul is a drop of the ocean of All-Consciousness.
So to know God we will have to know ourselves first. Like knows the like.
But unfortunately our soul is environed by mind and outgoing faculties. Our soul is under the control of mind, mind is under control of the outgoing faculties and outgoing faculties are dragged like anything by the outer enjoyments. So all Masters said that we should know ourselves first. “Know thyself! ” East and West makes no matter, you see. Those who have known God, they say the same thing. To know ourselves, we will have to know it not at the level of feelings or drawing inferences, but by self-analysis, by rising above body-consciousness.
How to? The outgoing faculties will have to be controlled, mind to be stilled and intellect also to be ceased for a while after understanding what is what. Only then we can know ourselves.
It is a matter of pure self-analysis, rising above the body-consciousness. To know God at the level of feelings or drawing inferences are subject to error. Seeing is above all. And this practical experience of rising above body-consciousness is to be had at the feet of someone who rises above body-consciousness daily.
Saint Paul said: “I die daily.” Dying daily means what? We have to undergo the same process as at the time of death, when the soul leaves the body. Plutarch tells us: “Those who are initiated into the mysteries of the Beyond, their soul has the same experience of leaving the body as it has at the time of death.”You know, the outer expression of the soul is attention. At the time of death the attention is withdrawn from all outside. When anybody goes to a man who is just dying, this man does not recognize anyone, because his attention is withdrawn from all outside. Then the lower body is benumbed, lower chakras are broken, we come up to the seat of the soul in the body which is at the back of the eyes. Then the eyes are upturned.
Learn to die, so that you may begin to live!
So knowing oneself – as I told you, this experience or demonstration can be had at the feet of somebody who rises (above the body) daily. He is also competent to give you a demonstration of the fact that you are the very life in the body and not the body, you see?
So this manbody is a wonderful house we live in; in which there are so many apertures: that of the eyes, of the ears, of the nostrils, mouth and two underneath. But we cannot run away out of it. We are controlled. So our body works so long as we are in the body. And we are in the body so long as we are controlled in the body by some higher Power, which is – according to the scriptures – the God-into-expression-Power, called Naam or Word. When that Power is withdrawn, we have to leave the body.
So, rising above body-consciousness by self-analysis gives you practically what is knowing oneself. When you know yourself, you see that some Power is controlling you.
One is leaving the body when the karmic link is broken, when the silver-cord (which is based on the reactions of the past) is broken; such a soul never returns. But if you know how to rise above body-consciousness while alive, this process is the same, but then you watch some Power is controlling you.
As I told you the other day, one atheist was at the deathbed. He had in his room a big motto: “God is nowhere!” A child came up and began to read: “G-o-d i-s n-o -w h-e-r-e: God is now here!” And that dying man said, “Yes, child, some Power is there.”
So it is knowing oneself by self-analysis, it is just rising above body-consciousness. When you know that Power, which is controlling us now in the body, that Power becomes apparent.
In the manbody alone we can know God. All the world is full of practices (rituals and rites), you see, we do one way or the other, so many things. Those are only preparation for the ground. So, those are good actions, of course. But, to have some models before us, it is just to understand something, but to see that thing for which that model stands, that is something else.
The other day I also explained that God is Wordless, Nameless, Ashabd. When He came into being, into expression, that Absolute God wanted: “I wish to be many”, there was vibration that resulted in two things: Light and Sound.
God is Light. God is Music of the Spheres – Nada.
These are the two outward expressions of God-into-expression-Power which is controlling the whole universe and also controlling us in the body. That can be contacted when we rise above body-consciousness to the seat of the soul in the body, which is at the back of the eyes. So, it is a practical question which can be demonstrated. When you see for your own self what is what, then only you can be convinced, not before.
Man is afraid of dying for two reasons: The first thing, we do not know how to leave the body. We are not accustomed to it. We are so much attached outside that we cannot dare to withdraw from outside. Sometimes we wish to withdraw from outside, but we are so much identified with the outside things, even if you want to leave, you cannot leave, you see? So, for that reason we have to withdraw from outside. If you know how to leave the body day to day, if you die daily as Saint Paul said, if you take the cross daily (the upright standing man with his arms stretched out shows the cross), then death becomes a matter of joy. Because all glory and beauty lies within you. The astral plane is more beautiful than the outer physical plane; causal is still more, and higher plane is still higher beauty and higher bliss. So, once a man has an experience of that, he would like to go, any time even, he would possibly go. Now as you are not in contact with that, mind is just given up to the outward enjoyments and used to that little bliss.
Now what are we doing? We make models of the manbody. Manbody is the true temple in which we live, and also that Power, that controls us in the body. Whom we want to contact and the one who wants to contact – both are in the same body.
But we cannot see Him, because our soul is under the control of mind, mind is under the control of the outgoing faculties, and outgoing faculties arc dragged like anything by the outer enjoyments. We have ourselves identified with it so much, that we have forgotten our (real) selves.
If you know how to rise daily, there is no sting of death in there.
Hindu scriptures tell us, when the soul leaves this physical body, man experiences terrible pain, like a scorpion’s bite. In the beginning it is just like pinching, then that gives terrible pain. Death can be compared to one thousand scorpions stinging together.
Mohammedan scriptures tell us, “When the soul leaves the body, it feels pain like that, as a thorny bush is taken through the rectum and torn through the mouth.” You see, how terrible man feels, if he has not learned how to die. Masters tell us, “Learn to die so that you may begin to live!” All Masters said the same in their own language.
And the second thing is, we do not know, what will be our fate after leaving the body. For two things we are afraid of death. If we sit at the feet of somebody who can give us a demonstration of how to rise above body-consciousness and gives us a link of the God-into-expression-Power – which is Light and Sound – that’s the way back to the Absolute God, direct way, no by-pass is being made. That is natural yoga, you see?
When mind gets that bliss, then naturally you would like to avoid outer enjoyments like anything.
Now what are we doing? We have made the models of the manbody outside: all temples are dome-shaped (like the human head); churches are nose shaped and mosques are forehead-shaped. We have put in two symbols of God-into-expression-Power: There is Light and Sound. We go there. There is a model to show that suchlike Light and suchlike Sound is within you.
So long as there were practical people (with practical experience), they gave others a demonstration as how to rise above body-consciousness, how to have a contact with that Light and Sound which is the outward aspect of the God-into-expression-Power. They were convinced. But for want of practical people, these things have become the be all and end all. They were only models to show that suchlike Light of God and Sound Principle is within you. For want of practical people, there was nobody to demonstrate the Light within us. So we simply go to the churches and the mosques and light the candle there, ring the bell there. Both things are outer worship. So you see, we follow the models which only show that suchlike Light is within you, and show that we are to rise above the physical body and have a contact with the true Light, with the true Sound which is reverberating within the man-body and all creation.
So those who have seen that, they say, “Body is the temple of God!” Masters say, “Manbody is the true temple of God in which the Light of God shines.” So we are so much given up to these outward models for want of practical people. We engage from day to day in these outward models which were made for the preparation of the ground, to let people understand, what is what.
When the Master meets us, He opens the Single Eye, Third Eye or Shiv Netra so that Light is seen for oneself. When you experience this, it is very easy to leave the body; it is a matter of joy.
Kabir said, “People are afraid of hearing the name of death. I am very much overjoyed when I hear the name of death. Because it is only then, that 1 can unite with the God overhead!”
I am now talking about Guru Amar Das, the third Guru of the Sikhs. He was engaged in outward practices, models, all schools of thought for seventy long years. But naturally one is only then satisfied, when one sees. When you see for yourself, then you can say, “God is Light.” If you don’t see and only think, “God is Light”, you are not in the Light of God. When you then say that God is Light, is it true for you? No.
After the search of Guru Amar Das for seventy long years (“Knock and it shall be opened unto you”), God made some arrangement to bring him in contact with the second Guru of the Sikhs. He got that experience of rising above body-consciousness and his Third Eye or Single Eye was opened within, so that he saw the Light of God and said, “God is Light!” Then he said, “I have spent seventy long years only engaged in the outward, in the methods which concern the esoteric side only.”
These are good actions, of course, because they are meant for God, but the doership is there, ego. “Whatever you will sow, so shall you reap/’ You have good thoughts, they result in good actions. You have bad thoughts, bad results. This coming and going (into this world) goes on like anything. You will go where you are attached.
But when you see that Power is overhead, you will say – like the atheist I mentioned – “Yes, my child, this Power is overhead.” That you only come to know if you now rise above body-consciousness, if you see for yourself: that Power is controlling.
Which aspect of God can you experience? Not the Absolute God; nobody has seen Him. Before coming into expression, He was Wordless, He was Nameless; when He came into expression, He was called Word, Naam or Shabd. So, there are two aspects of the Word. “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet.”
By coming in contact with Naam, you see the Light, which can be compared to hundreds and thousands of suns rising together. In whomsoever that Light is effulgent, truly speaking, he is a real disciple (Sikh).
Carrying one outer label or the other, belonging to different schools of thought or social bodies, does not necessarily mean, you have achieved that very object for which you joined that school of thought. One can be a true disciple only when one sees the Light of God. A true Hindu is one who sees the Light within. A true Christian is one who sees the Light of God. A true Mohammedan is one who sees the Light of God. The same thing for all, you see? When one, who does not see, says, “God is Light!”, it is just like a blind man’s work, you see? Only when you see that He is Light and He is the controlling Power keeping us, and we are mere puppets in His hand, naturally then all ego is lost, because you see that some higher Power is working (not you).
When Guru Amar Das himself saw that, he said, “Saying prayers and praising Him without seeing Him is just like a blind man’s work.” See and then say. All Masters say that. Unless you see, your praising God is good, for the good thoughts are at least towards God. But your ego and doership is not gone, so naturally, “As you sow so shall you reap!”
When we see that this Power is working and not you, naturally you lose your ego. So coming in contact with God-into-expression-Power, when you see, that it is this controlling Power that is keeping us in the body, and we are mere puppets in His hands, naturally ego goes. That can be had only when you sit at the feet of some really adept, called by any name you like, who opens your inner eye, so that you can see the Light of God within you.
At that time Guru Amar Das gave all his gist or the digest of the teaching in one hymn. That I’m going to present before you. He said: “Look here, where is God?” And he says: “God is in this very cave of the body!” A cave is always long and dark, you see? In this cave of the body He does live, you see, God, who is never ending and who is above all outgoing faculties. He lives in it.
Body is the temple of God.
Maulana Rumi tells us that prophet Mohammed told, that God says: “I am so great, that all this earth, sky and planes, higher and lower, all this creation is not sufficient to contain me in them. lam so great!” But He says: “Strange enough that I abide in the heart of a devotee. I am in everybody, I reside in every heart!”
Kabir says, “I went to have a pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina. On the way? God met me. He began to fight with me, saying, “Who told you I’m there? I am in you!” You see? Kabir was after finding Him by going round from places to places. All Masters’ digest I’m giving you, I need not to quote, there are hundreds of quotations there. They say: ‘The One whom you want to, He is within you. He is your controlling Power. He also resides in the body. Body is the true temple of God!’
Outward models are made to give you some idea: suchlike Power is within you? Unless we see that Power, we cannot lose ego; and so long the ego is not gone, we come round and round (to this world). So all Masters tell us like that. Guru Amar Das says, “God resides within you, just like – take the case of madder. The more you grind it in water, the more red colour it gives. As the fire is in the wood, by rubbing it, you get the fire. As butter is in the milk, that is changed into the curd, and curd should be shaken, and then butter will come out, you see? So suchlike God resides within you!”
All Masters tell us, “God resides in us! He resides in the heart of everybody!” But we do not see Him. Guru Amar Das says, “It is a sort of cataract. When this cover comes to the pupil, man cannot see. Only if that is removed carefully, sight is restored.” Similarly (our inner sight is restored), when our attention is withdrawn from all outside and just taken to the seat of the soul in the body – which is at the back of the eyes – to the tenth door in the body which opens into the beyond; there you knock and it shall be opened unto you.
So, Guru Amar Das gives the descriptions in all ways, how he got this and why people are going amiss. So first he said, “To whom you want to continue, to have it, He resides in your manbody. He is latent within you.” You see? And all this outward expression (of the world) is only of God-into-expression-Power. All this came out of Him, then where is that place, where He is not?
If you see in the air, there is nothing to be seen. Is there nothing in this air? There is of course. When you see through a microscope that magnifies all things about 700 times more, you will see that it is full of insects. They are there even now; either those things are magnified to come up to our level, or our inner eye is so much etherealized, that we come to their level. Then we can see.
There is God in us. Masters say that they have seen Him in this very man-body. Those who are trying to find Him in outward practices or observances, they will never get Him. These are good actions, of course. They (the Masters) don’t deny, but ego is there, doership is there. You have to sow; and as you sow, so shall you reap! Good actions will bring you good, your coming and going will go round and round, you see?
When you see that He is the worker, your ego is lost, naturally your coming and going is ended. So this is what Guru Amar Das said. When you come to the feet of a Master, He gives you a contact with that God-into-expression-Power, which is called Word, Shabd, Naam. Then you see for yourself: God is there! But God Absolute not, I tell you, God-into-expression-Power, the two aspects of which are Light and Sound. You see the Light of God, you hear the Music of the Spheres. Now he thanks God: “O God, I thank you very much, I sacrifice myself to you. I have been in a long, seventy years long search, then I thank to my Guru at whose feet I got this experience. I sacrifice myself not one time – hundreds of times to the Master, who had made God manifest in me!”
So you see, we need a teacher at every step. Even the children need parents, brothers and sisters to teach them. In schools we want teachers. In all outer aspects, all subjects which are related to the outgoing faculties, mind or intellect, we want guidance over there.
And for this subject – which is: How to rise above body-consciousness, to rise above outgoing faculties? – don’t you need anybody? You do need somebody! But we are afraid of it. Because the world is full of teachers, excuse me, now I say. Christ also said, “They come as lambs, but they are ravening wolves.”
There is so much acting and posing going on, the people cannot decide, what is what. And Masters lay out one criterion for that: Unless you see for yourself what the Master says, and unless you testified it, don’t believe the words of the Master. It is really a great criterion! This can differentiate right from the wrong.
Guru Amar Das says, “O God, I am thankful to my Guru who had made that God-into-expression-Power – after which I was seventy long years – manifested. Thank God!” One who gets that experience, there is gratefulness in such a heart.
Now he says, “First thing is that Naam, God-into-expression-Power, which has got two aspects. When you come in contact with it, that gives you everlasting life.” Amrit means Water of Life which gives you everlasting life; you’ll never die. Once you learn to die, you’ll live forever. “Learn to die, so that you may begin to live!”
That Water of Life is had only when you learn how to rise above body-consciousness physically. That gives you a taste, a sort of intoxication and bliss, with which mind forgets all outward enjoyments. In manbody only we can have it. And this thing we can have at the feet of the Master. He rises above physical body daily, hundred times a day at will if He wishes, and makes others to rise above body-consciousness. A practical demonstration of it is given by Him, and then they see for themselves really and rise above body-consciousness. Some get more, some others less (experience). But some capital is given to each one to start with.
A man who is coming to give you a talk on business principles, a wonderful and information talk, but the men, to whom this talk is given, have got no money. What will your talk help them?
When people come to us and give us very sweet stories of the Beyond, are they also able to give us something to start with? They are only giving beautiful talks. Where all the world’s philosophies end, there the religion starts. You must have something to be able to start with, maybe little or more, you see? So man can have this experience. And it is very sweet – there is sweetness, bliss in it.
Now he says, to rise above physical body is very difficult. Yogis have spent hundreds of years to rise above the physical body. They performed kumbhak, control of the breath at the different centres (chakras) in the body. Ultimately the came up to the sixth chakra at the back of the eyes which is the seat of the soul in the body. Then they saw and came in contact with the Sound Principle. How long it takes!
And when the Masters come, they give you little attention, and – whatever number of people there may be – all (their) outer attention is withdrawn, goes up, and the inner eye is opened. They get some experience of the Light and Sound Principle to start with. What a great concession that is in these days!
So how does He give? It is very difficult to rise above body-consciousness. And you are given some experience – more or less of how to rise above body-consciousness. You get some capital of Light and Sound to start with. Then you have to develop further!
Where the world’s philosophies end, as I told you, there the religion starts. Religion means: “re” – means back, “ligio” – to bind; to withdraw your attention (which is the outer expression of the soul) from all outside and contact it with God within you.
Now the question arises, how Master gives this. Guru Amar Das gives the one example of collyrium which is put on the eyes, you see? God gives the collyrium of that inner knowledge, which is to be experienced at the seat of the soul (at the back of the eyes). It is given in a very practical way. When the collyrium is put in the eyes, you see. And similarly some Godman or some Saint or some – name Him by any name you like – withdraws your attention from outside, withdraws it and brings it to the back of the eyes. Then you see Light.
How does the Godman or Saint give you this inner knowledge, this collyrium of Light and Sound? By withdrawing your attention from all outside and taking it to the seat of the soul at the back of the eyes, which Yogis were taken hundreds of years to have it. First there is all darkness, when you close your eyes. When He gives you a (meditation) sitting, your attention is withdrawn from outside, goes up and darkness fades away. You see Light! And you testify yourself that it is Light. He does not say you’ll have it in hundreds of years, after this life, at the end of life or in ten years. He at once gives you something to start with. First it is all darkness, you see. Then, when you see for yourself, you are convinced. This is how Guru Amar Das tells his story.
All Saints say that those who do not see God and praise Him are like blind men. In the terminology of the Saints a blind man is not one who has got no eyes on the forehead, but one whose inner eye is not opened and who is unable to see the Light of God.
Kabir says, “I see all blind men sitting around me. Had there been one or two, I would have explained to them. What to speak, everywhere I look, all are blind!” Very sweeping remarks of course, but true. Teacher of the man is a man. God resides in every heart. But only the one, in whom He is manifest, can give you a demonstration of it, that’s all.
The grace of God is working in a manbody, you see. “Word-made-flesh” you might say. God is manifesting in the manbody. And that Power withdraws your attention from all outside, takes it up, and then you see Light. Your inner eye or the single eye is opened. That happens when all your attention is withdrawn from outside and you rise above the chakras. You reach the seat of the soul in the body which is at the back of the eyes and you see for yourself!
So, for this reason He says, “Those who are going to find God in all worldly things outside, practices, their whole labour is just like a man’s (labour), who has to work day and night and still gets no pay.” So all labour is lost in doing all outward expenses valued according to that.
The real thing is: to know God.
People practice all models. With all that we do not see God. Of course those are good actions, which will give us good results. But ego is not lost, and the coming and going will go on. So, those who are under the control of mind and outgoing faculties, identified with it, they say “How can there be light inside? Who says? When you close your eyes, it is all darkness?” They don’t believe. When they see for themselves, then they have to say, “Yes, there is something!” So Master tells not to believe in anything what the Master says, unless you bear testimony to it (may be little or more). That’s the work of a Master or a Saint, from where you can discriminate right from the wrong, ravening wolves from the lambs. Guru Amar Das says, “With the Grace of the Guru I have found God.” How? By self-analysis.
Macrocosm is in the microcosm. When he rose above physical body – there are three different stages of mind: one is physical mind, the other is astral mind, the third is causal-mind – he said, “When I rose from the physical body and the physical mind, then I saw some light. When I rose from the astral mind and astral body, I saw still more light. When I rose still above them, there was still more light.”
It is just like a lamp with three or four covers over it. When you light it, you see no light. If you take off one cover, you see some light. If you take off two covers, there is still more light. If you take off three covers, still more light can be seen.
So God is all Light. When we have some experience of the Light and Sound Principle, it grows more and more and gets sweeter, as the densities of the different planes are changed. Guru Amar Das is telling all that, how he got God by analysing himself, rising above the physical body and physical mind, astral body and astral mind, and causal body and causal mind.
Now he says, “Godman or man-in-God, or call any name you like, Sadhu or Saint or elder brother or father, He gives you an experience of the Light by bringing your attention into the eye-centre. Then you see Light. When you sit there, truly you see, and you start to praise God. Those who praise God without seeing Him, they are like blind men! These are good actions of course, the Master does not deny, these are good actions, you see, but the doership is there. Natural: “As you sow, so shall you reap!”
Now again Guru Amar Das further goes, “This manbody is a wonderful house; it has got ten doors. Nine are apparent, one is latent.” Two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, mouth and two underneath – they are open, apparent. There are the nine doors open to the sense world and there is the tenth door behind at the back of the eyes, where the soul passes into the beyond by coming to that place where the single eye opens. He says, “As long as you do not withdraw your attention from outside, from the nine doors and come to the tenth door, you will neither see Light nor will you hear the Sound Principle.” He gives very clearly all his life experience. People say that Saints keep this thing secret. No, no; they tell out from the platforms like that, you see? It is for all people. If you can go up yourself, well and good. If not, take the help of somebody!
So what he says? “I withdrew my attention from outside, from the nine doors and came to the tenth door at the back of the eyes. There I heard the sweet melody of the Music of the Spheres, Nada. That is giving highest bliss.”
As long as we have no contact with that God Power which is called Shabd, Word or Naam, you will see darkness, when you close your eyes! When you withdraw your attention from outside and come to the back of the eyes, the single eye is opened and then you can see the Light.
Christ said that it is better to enter the Kingdom of God with one eye, rather than two, which will cast you into hell. You see?
“If thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light!” – “Straight is the gate!” (“Because straight is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” Matthew 7,14) Read the scriptures! These are references to the beyond – how the soul leaves the manbody.
Now Guru Amar Das says, “Unless the darkness is removed and you see the Light of God face to face, your coming and going (into this world) will not end!”
When you see God, see that He is the power controlling you, your ego is lost and you are not to come back (into this world).
But unless you see the Light of God within you, you are only devoted to the models given in the churches, temples and the mosques for daily worship. Amongst Hindus there is a custom, you see. When a man is on the deathbed, they light a lamp, give it to him and ask him, “Look into the flame of the lamp!” And they read a mantra that means, “This light will lead you to God!” You see, hand and light, both remain here. What Light will be there (in the beyond)? That light, which is within you already.
You can see it when you reach the tenth door in the body and your inner eye, third eye or the single eye is opened. So he says, “Who has the key?” Suppose there is a man who has got a house. You want to enter that house, but the owner has locked up the door of the house and given the key to the agent or the servant or somebody. So first you’ll have to seek the sanction of the owner of the house. If he gives sanction, then he asks the servant, “Go and open the door!”
God resides where? God resides in the temple which is made in the womb of the mother. He resides in this manbody.
He has locked it and given the key to whom? To the “God-in-man” or “man-in-God” or Saint, or any name you like. He gives you a sitting, withdraws your attention from all outside to the seat of the soul in the body and you see Light. Of course some get more (experience), some get less according to each man’s background, but everybody gets something to start with.
The key of success is with the Saint. The one who made that body – God – He locked it off and gave the key to the Saint to open it whenever He gives sanction. Not all are given initiation, it is God-chosen, we are chosen by Him. It is not with us to choose. It is Him who chooses.
Whom He chooses? Now for an example, there is an office, where there are some appointments vacant. The officer-in-charge over there whose handwriting is carried off very wonderful, he asks all hand-written applications to come to him. He passes on all of them. Hundreds of applications he passes on. Whatever handwriting is very beautiful, he takes out. You see? Because he appreciates that qualification which is in him.
God sees those who are hankering more after God as compared for the world. God resides inside, He makes some arrangement to bring you in contact with someone who can put you on the path, that’s all. He chooses you. Those who are very yearning for Him, He brings them in contact with someone so that they can be put on the way.
Now Guru Amar Das repeats: “That manbody is the cave which is dark inside, and God resides in it.” “He is so great”, as prophet Mohammed said, “but He can just reside in the devotee’s heart.” He is latent, all this outer expression is also God, all you see is the expression of God. First you only see darkness – but when your inner eye is opened then you see:
“It is all Light, God is everywhere. There is no place where God is not.”
But how can that be done? … It is already there. It is only a question of withdrawing from outside and coming up to the seat of soul. If you can reach there yourself- do your best! If you can – what more is wanted? If you are not successful, then let you be helped by someone, as you also need the help of a teacher in outer things. Just sit by somebody who gives that free; all gifts of God are free: air, sun, water, earth. This earth is a gift of God. To sit at the feet of someone who gives you all this freely is necessary.
The word “Gurmukh” means, when your eyes come in contact with the eyes of the Godman, and live is in tune. One third of the teaching is given by the word of mouth and two third by radiation. So devotion is necessary. In devotion you develop receptivity. And there you learn more.
So Guru Amar Das says, “When you want to derive full benefit of the man-body, which is the golden opportunity you have got to know God, then sit at the feet of a Saint!” If real yearning is there, God within you sees that you are really crying for Him, He makes some arrangement to bring you in contact with someone where you can be put on the way. Then you will testify yourself that it is like that. You may get something, little or more (according to each man’s background); you get something to start with.
So this is what Guru Amar Das gave out, when he came to the feet of his Master. He gave the digest of all his teachings in one hymn.
So every Saint has His past, and every sinner a future. There is hope for everybody. When Guru Amar Das came up to that state, he said, “I was like you some day. I’ve now come up with the grace of God.” What did the grace of God do? “I was like a stone under water – under control of the outgoing faculties, He dragged me up and manifested Himself to me.”
So there is hope for everybody, those who have got the manbody. That is why manbody is spoken of very highly. Even the angels are asked to bow down to the manbody. All souls of the rishis of the old, when they returned after enjoying the higher bliss of the planes, they chose the manbody to enter. You are very fortunate, you have got the manbody.
So this is the highest time to know God. All other things are reactions of the past, give and take. The flowing pen of God has united us as a reaction of our past, some as brothers, sisters, wives, husbands or parents. So, a Godman or man-in-God brings you in closer relation which is already existing. When Christ was told, while many people were sitting near him, “Your mother had come!”, he answered: “Who is my mother? Those who do the will of my Father, they are to me mother, brother and sister, they are mine!” This is a true relation in which a Godman unites us, you see? As man you are all one. As soul we are of the same essence as that of God, we are all brothers and sisters in God.
We worship the same God called by different names. So it is high time to see Him. We have got the golden opportunity for it. All who are sitting here have got the manbody for such a long time – twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty years. But have you reached God? If yes, well and good. If not – hurry up! So this is the high time now.
This is what I found by the parallel study of the scriptures and by sitting at the feet of the Master just as Guru Amar Das has placed before you. He has passed seventy years in search of God, and when he got the experience of Him, he showed to others, “This is the way!”
So I placed this before you. I may thank you for your patient hearing. What I found I have placed before you. So thank you for your affording this opportunity of snatching away your time from your busy hours to just have a patient listening to what I have come to know. So I thank you all for all that.
One thing I have to say, specially for those who have already been initiated. For them two things are necessary. First: meditation – it is the bread of life and water of life. No day should pass without taking that food. You are asked to put in as much time as you can, at least two hours daily. When I went to my Master, I asked Him how much time I should put in. I was a family man, I had two children, I was serving also, earning my livelihood. He said: “Put in five to six hours at least, the more, the better!” You see?
After all, it is us who have to work on it. So at least put in two hours, if more – that’s all right. It is helping yourself. Two hours of the twenty four hours are not much. One tithe is to be given. One tithe of the twenty four hours become two hours and twenty minutes. You are further given a concession of twenty minutes.
The second thing is to maintain the diary. Hitherto these things were given only when the people were ready, when the vessel was clean. Now the times have changed. Who can sit at the feet of the Master for years? So you are given something to start with first and you are asked to maintain it by self-introspection, weeding out all failures in life and also putting in regular time daily.
If you weed out all imperfections from within, and also put in regular time and get something to start with already, then that experience will develop from day to day. So for that, self-introspection diary is necessary, so that you may know yourself who you are, what the failures in your life are, you see? It is just like when we go to the church, to the priest, when we make confession and pray: “O God, I have done that, I won’t do more!” You see, do it a hundred times a day.
So when you get something to start with, that is always to develop, it is helping your own self, is it not? “Learn to die so that you may begin to live!” There is no fear of death, no sting of death to be left. So put in regular time to your bread of life and water of life. Give water of life to your soul first, then give the bread of life to the body. And God will help you.

For the sake of God’s love, we love all people. We must love them without exception. If you do not love all people and claim to love God’s power, you are lying, you are not being true to yourself. He who is imbued with the color of the Master, the color of love, knows no hatred, he hates no one. He loves all people, regardless of what these people think and what their deeds and actions are. He knows: “My Father is in each one of us.” He sees that the Father dwells in everyone, so he loves everyone from the depths of his heart, not outwardly. What he says is free of duality. His words are full of meaning.

Today I would like to share with you a short video about the competency of Sant Kirpal Singh who was unanimously elected President of the World Fellowship of Religions (WFR) over a time-span of 14 years.

On His last Punjab-tour in October 1973, Sant Kirpal Singh visited the Agriculture Farm located near Nawanshar. There was one room made of mud and one Pacca-room beside a little room for the water-pump. Master stayed there nearly for fifteen minutes. He took water from the water-pump and a grain of rice. Then He blessed Kirpal Sagar which now has been built beside the Farm.
With due permission of the Master, the name Manav Kendra was changed to Kirpal Sagar before Sant Kirpal Singh left His physical body. Kirpal means ‘Grace’, Sagar means ‘Ocean’ – thus the name Kirpal Sagar means ‘Ocean of Grace’.
Master wants from heart that everyone should do the work (selfless service): Everyone should put his head and heart to do that work. It is His earnest desire, a desire from His heart, because He loves each child and wants to develop everyone. He is not having any connection with us on the physical level, but His contact is direct with the soul.
So blessed are those who are chosen for this purpose; they are very fortunate. Master always laid stress upon this subject (the importance of selfless service). Because in the lives of all competent Masters and their devotees, there was only one way: To live and to do for Him! And this is the ultimate goal. If the disciple is obliged to the Master, he says, “I have to do whatever my Master would tell me, it is my highest duty to obey His order.”
Background of Kirpal Sagar
The place which Sant Kirpal Singh has chosen for Kirpal Sagar has also a background which first was not known to us. When we started the construction work, people from the surroundings came to us, and one of them told that an old person had been living there whose name was Chattar Singh; he was considered to be mad. To that place the cows were taken for grazing, and he used to sit along with the boys there. He never would return to his home, he stayed overnight in the forest, which was full of snakes. There was also a certain animal which always attacks man. It is not injurious, but its teeth are very sharp. One time, when taking rest, he was bitten by this animal and his nose was bleeding. Those boys wanted to take him to the doctor nearby for dressing the wound, but he said, “No, there is a hospital, I have got it dressed over there.”
Sometimes the boys used to say, “Old man, you are smelling, you should take a bath.” He would reply, “Yes, here is a Sarovar, a holy tank, I’m always taking a bath there.” When they offered him to share their food, he answered, “No, there is a big common kitchen here, I always take the food from here.” All the time he used to tell such things, and he even said, “There is a big temple, a house of God.” So all people called him a mad person, who is seeing things where other people don’t see anything. Now those persons from the neighbourhood believe that he was a holy man.
So, holy places are already fixed by the Masterpower. Kings, premiers, and rich persons can create cities, but holy places are built only by the Masters, they are built in the omnipresence of the Masterpower. The guidance of the Master continues every moment, and in spite of many problems in the beginning the commissioned Manav Kendra could be constructed.
It belongs to all human beings of the world
Kirpal Sagar is a common ground for all people to get together, irrespective of caste, colour, creed, religion or country. It belongs to all human beings of the world. In Kirpal Sagar no religion but the basic teaching of all religions is taught, which is one and the same and has been written with one opinion.
To keep the various outer rituals and rites of the different religions with their basic signification is no bar to true religion. Every religion teaches the universal teaching of the universal link among all human beings – the Brotherhood of Men under the Fatherhood of God. Religion is a very smooth pattern and a way to realize one’s self, if one rises above the shackles of the religion.
Kirpal Sagar is neither being built in the memory of Sant Kirpal Singh, nor is it a personal wish. It was the wish of Sant Kirpal Singh which is being fulfilled by all devoted disciples of Him.
Moreover, who learns and yearns or who wants to learn and yearn can also work in Kirpal Sagar, as it is the work of God, done by man but inspired by God. This is the highest but the rarest chance that ever comes in the life of a human being.
