If you come to Kirpal Sagar, you can see the symbols of unity from afar. At first sight they are models of the four most common types of churches: the model of a Sikh temple, a Hindu temple, a mosque and a church. These typical forms are known from all religious traditions. Less known is that they refer to the human body.
Gurdawaras, the temples of the Sikhs, are dome-shaped, similar to the form of the head. The shape of the mosque reminds one of the forehead. The nose-shaped towers of the churches often stand on a ground plan resembling a cross that corresponds to a person with outstretched arms.
Their message is: God is in us – the true temple is man himself.
The history of mystics and saints of different epochs and cultures shows that they all went the way of contemplation and meditation and thus came to their statements about God. The Holy Scriptures contain hints and reports about their inner experiences. When comparing the scriptures, one encounters conforming statements about experiences of light and inner sounds, with perfect spiritual teachers or Masters able to convey them to other people in practice.
While the Absolute God is indescribable and incomprehensible, light and sound are the two aspects through which He expresses Himself.
Everything originated through this God-power, is the life principle or the life impulse, without nothing can exist. Man as the ‘crown of creation’ has the ability to perceive It by turning inwardly and coming into contact with It. Becoming one with this power is the original goal of meditation, and this is also the spiritual core of religion, which is completely independent of the external forms and rituals of the various religions.
In the scriptures, the working God-power is described by various names, among others as Sruti in the Vedas, Naad or Udgit in the Upanishads, as Sarosha in Zend-Avesta, as the word in the Bible, as Kalima with the Prophet Mohammed, as Saut with the Sufis, Shabd or Naam in the Sikh scriptures, as music of the spheres and all harmonies with Plato and Pythagoras and as the voice of silence with the Theosophists.
Light, life and love are regarded as the essential attributes of the divine and are innate in every sentient being. If man forgets his true nature and experiences himself as separated from that Power, it will result in strangeness, which may lead to hatred and suffering.
The relationship between man and God is based on unity of man – the brotherhood of man under the fatherhood of God.

Guru Nanak said, “I speak what God makes me speak, I speak as it comes from above. I am simply a mouthpiece”. Such a human pole at which God is manifest is called a Saint or a Master. He gives you such a gift which nobodyelse on earth can give you. No son of man can do it. No intellectual can give it to you. So this is what the Masters give when they come. Although references to these facts are made in the books, pity it is that they are not explicitly explained in them. The references are made but who will interpret the true import of what is said? Only a man who has lived it can do this. He explains in a clearcut manner and in very few words. You understand now what the Master gives? He is intoxicated with the Elixir of Life and whoever goes to Him also gets a cup of the same Elixir. The competence of the Master lies in not giving theories or lectures, or explaining what past Masters said, but to give you first in theory and then a demonstration of the theory in a practical experience. This is really where the greatness of the Master lies. So this is the Bread and Water of Life, which the Masters have been giving in the past. The formations that resulted from their teachings were made for the purpose of enabling more people to have that Bread of Life. So long as the practical God-in-man or man-in-God was amongst them, they enjoyed that privilege. When the formations became devoid of such Personalities or human bodies at which God was working, these very formations became stagnations and stagnation results in deterioration. An intellectual can give you all of these statements by word but cannot demonstrate or give a cup of that Elixir, by giving some capital to start with. Many so called masters come with their propaganda, but they give only the theory. They tell you to repeat this or that mantra or words. That alone won’t do. Our Master used to say, “Any little girl spinning a wheel can give you the five words. That means nothing, it is the demonstration which counts”. The greatness of the Master lies in the fact that He is competent to give you some capital to start with, by withdrawing your attention from outside and raising it above body consciousness. He opens your inner eye to see the Light of God and to hear the Voice of God, maybe little or more. That depends upon each man’s background. But you must have something to start with. He who can give that Bread or Water of Life is called a Saint. This is why the Masters have been so highly spoken of in sacred literature, whether they belonged to one country or another. To meet with such a Master is a great blessing.
Most of us know how the Bible begins: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God…” – it is not just a word, but it is the God into expression power in the Word. Please, read what Sant Kirpal Singh has to say in this connection:
The Absolute God is Wordless, Imageless and Nameless. When it came into being, it was called Word or Naam.
“Naam” is nothing more nor less than Godhood of God; one may call it what one may like – the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, etc. It is the primal manifestation of God, responsible for the entire creation. It is the primeval form of God.
St. John speaks of it thus: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life; and the life was the light of man. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehendeth it not.”
In these memorable words, St. John has tried to give us some idea of the marvellous nature of the Word or Naam, as it is also called. It combines in it the triple principle of Creation, Sustenance and Destruction-the Trimurti of the Hindu mythology of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva-the Creator, the Preserver and the Destroyer respectively, all the three deriving their motor power from Godhood or God-in-action, Naam or Word.
Hazrat Moieen-ud-Din Chishti, in this context, says, Name and the Named are but one, Light of Name witnesseth His glory. All that is, is of and from Naam, for it pervades everywhere. It is the life principle of the entire creation. He in whom this Word or Naam becomes personified is called a saint for it is said that, “Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.” Such a one has reached the summum bonum of life and gained the El Dorado of human existence. For him there is nothing more to wish for and aspire for.
Naam: What it is
All scriptures speak of Naam but have not been able to say adequately what it is. It is impossible to define and delineate it in words. It may be described as “Life-impulse” or “Conscious-principle.” When it begins to vibrate, it produces melodious sound, which is termed Naam or Shabd. This Sound Current proceeding from the Deep Silence of the Formless Kutasth is responsible for all forms and colors, visible and invisible to the naked eye. All life hangs on this Life-principle. No life can exist without Naam. The Sound-principle is all-pervading; it may or may not be felt, yet it is reverberating from top to toe. It is the Kernel and the Essence and at once both the material and efficient Cause of the endless universes in which this physical earth is but a speck.
0 Pipa! This universal vibration is the Primal Causeless Cause, but can be apprehended only through a Master-soul.
In all religions God is spoken of as the Sound-manifest or Life Principle. It is a current, live and conscious, and has in it the germs of creation. It is because of this link between the Creator and the creation that the spirit or soul of a person can cross over the physical body and traverse the spiritual regions to reach the True Home of our Father-Sach Khand.
Greatness of Naam and its needs
The access to spiritual regions cannot be gained except with the wings of Naam.
A Persian poet says,
It behooves thee to fly to the higher realms and that thou canst do with the wings of Naam.
Again, If thou wishest union with Truth, thou must get united with Naam (i.e., Word or the manifest form of Truth unmanifested) for therein lies the only possible union with Truth.
All Saints spoke about Naam, Shabd or Word
The Path of the Naam is the most ancient and the most natural. It is in consonance with the Divine Law. In all the four ages, it had acted as a saving lifeline for the people.
During the last five hundred years, Saints like Kabir Sahib, Guru Nanak and the other nine Sikh Gurus, Dadu Sahib, Paltu Sahib, Tulsi Sahib, Soami Shiv Dayal Singh, Baba Jaimal Singh and Baba Sawan Singh have been the great exponents of this Path.
The Muslim divines have been practising and preaching the Path of Kalma for fourteen hundred years or more. The Prophet Mohammed, Shamas Tabrez, Maulana Rumi, Hafiz Sahib, Moeen-ud-Din-Chisti, and others taught this very thing.
Again, two thousand years ago, John, the Baptist, and Christ laid down the Path of the Word or Logos. Zoroaster long before preached of Sarosha or the Sound Current in Persia. Lord Buddha, twenty-five hundred years ago, practised this very sadhna (spiritual practice).
Four thousand years back, we find that in Egypt it was known as the “Path of Aton” which was preached by King Echnaton. In the Upanishads we find references to Udgit or the Harmony of the Beyond. Lord Krishna, long before, was fully conversant with this science. In the Vedas, the oldest scriptures of the world, we read in Wak Devi Sikat of Naad or music and Sruti or that which is heard. Kabir Sahib tells us that He came in all the four Yugas, and every time He preached of Naam or Word.
We are to understand this principle, this law. If we understand this principle or Law of Karma, then we can come out of it and go back home. Otherwise we’ll keep on coming and going and coming and going. So each cause has an effect. Every action brings about a reaction. Uproot the cause and the effect disappears. This has been done by the Masters who have transcended these laws. But all others are bound by the bonds of karma, which is the root cause of physical existence. Of course, these are very good actions, the reactions of which have given you the manbody. But still we have to be very careful what we do: either we are trying to go back down or back home.
There are three kinds of karma
One kind is called Sanchit. “Sanchit” means “which are stored as yet,” not fructified. So suchlike karmas, you see, from hundreds of births back, are just in store, not yet touched for reaction.
Ever since we have left the house of our Father, ever since we have been sent to the earth, we have been coming and going. Action and reaction has been going on. Some has been paid off by Pralabdha karma. Pralabdha karmas are the karmas which are in fruit, which are fructified, and on which our present existence is based. First, we have got the manbody. That is the result of very high karma, good karma.
So pralabdha is the karma on which our present life is based. It is what is called “fate” or “destiny.” Fate or destiny is a reaction of our past karma which is now in fruit.The third class is Kriyaman, the actions that we do daily. Man is free within certain limits and bound within certain limits.
When you sow a seed, it will bring forth similar seeds
There is action-reaction; then again a reaction; and the thing goes on like that. There’s no end to it. After sowing the grain, a man cannot stop having the harvest – the fruit will come. So there are many actions. Actions are of one kind, but there are three aspects to them. There are certain actions which we are doing now, daily – fresh actions; fresh seeds are sown, you might say. Some have already been sown and are bearing fruit. Others have been sown, but are not yet bearing forth fruit. So there are three kinds of karmas or actions.
Is our destiny predestined?
Our present life depends on those reactions of the past karmas which are bearing fruit. They are called pralabdha karma. On that karma our length of life is based. According to that, some people get children, some die, some are ugly, some are old, some have a give-and-take. This is based on those karmas or seeds which have grown in the past and are now bearing forth fruit in action. This you cannot change.
We are independent within certain limits to do some actions, and we are also bound to some extent
When a railroad line is laid down, the train will run over it. Before you lay down any railroad line, it is up to you to lay it down this way or that way. But once it is laid down, the train will have to run over it. So, as I told you, some karmas are bearing fruit; some we are doing fresh; and others have not yet borne any fruit – that will come up in due course.
So we are independent within certain limits to do some actions, and we are also bound to some extent. Action, reaction, action, reaction goes on – there’s no end to it.
How to overcome the karmas
When a Master meets someone, he does not touch the present reactions which are coming up; for our life is based on that. He lets it alone, he lets it go on. For the future, Master lays down a line of conduct. For the present which is bearing fruit, he gives food to the soul so that it will become strong and there will not be any pinching effect. And for those which are not yet bearing forth fruit, he gives the disciple a contact with God within. By coming in contact with God within – when his inner eye is opened – he sees that He is the doer of all; that we are mere puppets in His hands. He becomes a conscious co-worker of the Divine Plan. The result is that there is no I-hood left. And all those actions which were sown in the past, and are still awaiting fruit, are burned away. Who is there to bear their fruit? So this is the way in which you can escape from the reactions of the past.
When you come in contact with God – when you become a conscious co-worker of the Divine Plan – all karmas which are in store are burned away; just as if you roast seeds in the oven, they won’t grow. And this is the way in which all the karmas are wound up. That is why it is said: “What is the use of going to a Master if these reactions are not ended? If you go to the feet of a lion and are afraid of jackals, what’s the use of going to a lion? This is how the karmas are wound up: first, by prescribing a certain conduct of life; second, by an inner, higher contact.

The Criterion for Judging a True Master
Do not judge a master by his external appearance, genealogical descent, rich or poor attire, country of origin, how he talks, eats or the position he holds, the number of books that he is the author of, or by what people say about him. First receive the inner experience he promises; then judge from that elevated angle of vision. Self-experience is the criterion for judging a genuine Master. Any living person who sees things from a spiritual level – man and his embarrassments, difficulties and helplessness – and who has studied the problems confronting humanity, can provide their solutions, and is also able to correct and guide man visibly and invisibly, morally and spiritually, in theory as well as in practice – only such a person is fit to take the responsible position of a Master. Blessed are those who experience a stirring emotion of happiness and longing in their hearts on hearing the news that such a Master exists and is near.
Spirituality is a science simpler and easier than other sciences. Man has not to exert except in moulding himself ethically and morally to the climax of love, sincerity and humility, which will produce the necessary state of receptivity in him. Everything else is in the hands of the Master. Again, a movement, no matter how spiritual it may appear to be on the surface, should not be judged by the number of followers that it has. A good speaker can attract crowds anywhere, yet there may not be anything material or convincing in his speech. Spirituality is not the exclusive possession of any family or place, but it is like a scented flower that grows wherever nature has ordained, around which the bees gather from far and wide to sip its nectar. Masters do not rush after glory of self, although they certainly deserve such glory. Even in ordinary talks, they will be heard to say, “Oh, it is all the grace of my Master. It is none of my doing. My Master deserves all the praise and credit.” This humility places them far above the low level of egoism found in this world.
Masters have come in all ages to offer this natural science to man. Only those who are discontented with this world rush to them. Others, to whom worldly attractions, pleasures and luxuries are dear, turn their backs. Those in whose hearts all noble sentiments are dead not only put all possible obstacles in the way of the Saints, but also subject them to various kinds of tortures, as a study of the lives of Jesus, Guru Nanak, Kabir and others will show. Masters have come in the past, are existing today, and will continue to come in the future for the spiritual benefit of man. To suppose and accept that spirituality has become the sole prerogative of any religion after the passing of the master on whose teachings it is based, and that sacred books are the only guide, shows the thoughtlessness of man.
How can we distinguish between a genuine and a false master? There is in fact no such testing stone or magical formula except that of self-experience, for discriminating right from wrong, truth from falsehood, and reality from unreality. Even in the time of Emperor Janak (the father of Sita of the Ramayana) who was prepared to pay a big fee for the theoretical knowledge of this science, only one, Yagyavalkya, out of all the Rishis, Yogis and Munis in India, was able to do so and won the prize. Yagyavalkya however, had the moral courage to admit, “Gargi,3 I know the theory only but have no personal experience of it.” On a second occasion, Emperor Janak proclaimed that he wanted a practical experience of this science on a certain date, and that in a very short time too, not exceeding the time taken to straddle a horse and put each foot in its stirrup. Great Yogis and Rishis throughout the length and breadth of India were invited, but at the appointed time only one person stepped forward to accept the challenge. This was a hunchback named Ashtavakra, who had eight humps in his body. The audience, taking him for a maniac, laughed aloud at his appearance. Ashtavakra said, “How can you expect to get spiritual experience from these cobblers you have collected, who have eyes only for the skin of the body but cannot see within?” The experience was duly given to the Emperor within the allotted time. The point to consider is that at the time when spirituality was thriving, only one person came forward to accept the challenge. In these times then, when materialism is on the increase, we do not find competent Masters growing like mushrooms. So search we must, not allowing false propaganda, the testimony of others, blind faith, the promise of future happiness, and our regard for position, wealth and pleasure, to lead us astray. When such personalities come, they are competent to give life to millions of people who go to them. They are the children of light, and give light to all humanity.
Blind faith is one of the main obstacles to overcome. What we simply listen to, read, or follow without investigating as to what and where it will lead to, is blind faith. If one is careless and forgets the ends while following the means, so that he does not see whether he is nearing the end or not, it is still blind faith. When one goes to a Master and listens attentively to the explanations given by him on the subject of gaining Self-Knowledge by self-analysis, duly supported by one or more quotations from the valuable sayings of various Saints, he is intellectually convinced to tread the path as an experimental measure and act up to what the Master says with faith for the time being. This is the first stepping-stone to learn about reality. When he has the first-hand experience, of whatever degree it may be, he is convinced and progresses from day to day. Today man listens to talks, lectures and sermons, accepts and believes these all his life, and takes for granted that he has been placed firmly on the way to salvation. But when death comes with all its sufferings, pangs of separation, and fears of the unknown, he realizes his mistake. Man’s life-long habit of attachment to his body occupies all his thoughts, while friends, doctors, relatives and priests stand by helpless and despairing.
It is here that the science of Para Vidya is of great help to us. The soul’s withdrawal from the body is greatly eased and the Master appears to receive and guide it further in the beyond. Death is to such a one the happiest of events and like marriage, is the union with the Beloved. He has already visited and convinced himself of the superiority of the higher regions and traverses the familiar territory without fear. My Master, Hazur Baba Sawan Singh Ji, when impressing the need of spiritual practices on His disciples, used to say to them, “Go and see a disciple dying to become convinced.” Saints believe in salvation during one’s lifetime and not in salvation after death. This is indeed a simple and easy science, and the disciple should never rest content with his Initiation without spiritual experience. He should then devote regular time to the spiritual practices, and the Master must be regularly informed of his progress. He should constantly seek the guidance of his Master personally or by letter, without entertaining thoughts that he is bothering Him. The Master knows by intuition how each disciple is faring and can remove most of his difficulties by thought transference or other means, but He wishes any difficulties in progress to be brought to His notice in writing.
The ancient path of Surat Shabd Yoga or Para Vidya is one that can be followed by men, women and children of all ages without any difficulty, unlike other ways which involve complicated strenuous exercises and control of the breath. These, at the most, lead to a slight control over the self and a few paltry powers. The latter methods also require a strong physique and a rich diet. As such, they are condemned by the Masters as unsuited to this age, and as involving physical dangers to the body.

The movement was brought into being by Sant Kirpal Singh who taught the ancient path of self-knowledge and God-knowledge and was worldwide esteemed for His untiring commitment to create a spirit of brotherhood and peace. In 1974, Sant Kirpal Singh convened the first “World Conference on the Unity of Man” in Delhi. This impressive conference became the starting point of the movement which was carried on by Dr Harbhajan Singh and his wife, Mrs Surinder Kaur.
The name Unity of Man refers to the inner unity of all life. Just like the sun and the sunrays are in perfect union, the same way God is not separate from His souls. We are drops of the ocean of all consciousness, whom we worship as the same God, calling Him by different names. The human body is the true temple of God, and the human form provides us with a golden opportunity to realize Him.
To fill the human heart with compassion, mercy and universal love, which should radiate to all countries, nations and peoples of the world. To make a true religion of the heart as the ruling factor in one’s life.
To enable each one to love God, love all, serve all, and have respect for all, as God is immanent in all forms.
My goal is that of oneness. I spread the message of oneness in life and living. This is the way to peace on earth. This is the mission of my life, and I pray that it may be fulfilled.

SANT KIRPAL SINGH
Words cannot do justice to a personality like Sant Kirpal Singh. Esteemed worldwide as a great Saint of the 20th century, embodiment of kindness and mercy, He gave out the living knowledge of the true nature of man whose aim is to return to his origin – God, and emphasised the value and dignity of each individual as a conscious being or soul. Sant Kirpal Singh did not teach any new faith. He treated the subject of spirituality as a science.
DR HARBHAJAN SINGH
Commissioned by Sant Kirpal Singh to carry on His work, Dr Harbhajan Singh dedicated his whole life to the service of humanity and built up the Project Kirpal Sagar. His example inspired others to lead a life with higher values. Born on 10 December 1932 in Laaylpur, situated at that time in India before the partition, Dr Harbhajan Singh met Sant Kirpal Singh in 1961, after years of intense search.
MRS SURINDER KAUR
Mrs Surinder Kaur, president of Unity of Man India, was born in 1940 in the village of Bhawalpur, where she grew up with two brothers and three sisters. The name of her mother was Paronie Kaur, and that of her father, Katar Singh. He was a freedom-fighter, a courageous and broad-hearted character, who supported the needy with the means he was able to save when they had to flee to eastern Punjab during the partition of India.

In the physical body, two main currents are working that control life: one a motor current (breathing or prana) and the other a sensory current, which may also be called attention or surat. The Masters ignore the former so that the breathing is not interfered with and the life process goes on. The sensory current ramifies throughout the entire body, but its main centre lies between and behind the two eyebrows, along with the mind. We have to withdraw the sensory current or spirit to its centre.
The mind will not allow man to have knowledge of the soul. Its nature is to seek pleasure and its constant fluctuations are difficult to subdue. Attuning one’s self with the internal sound current is the best way to calm the mind and practice concentration. It does not matter what school of thought or society a man may belong to. He has not to convert himself and can remain where he is. There are no hard and fast rules, no rituals, no ceremonies, no pomp and show, no offering of gifts, not even of flowers. All that a disciple has to do is to enter inside and henceforth consider the body as his laboratory. With regard to the theory, he has to understand the following, which is briefly the pith of what he will hear at Satsangs:
1) The Master is not the body, He is the Power functioning through the body and uses it to teach and guide man in much the same way as a spirit uses a medium. Only in bodily form will the disciple be able to recognize his Master in the higher regions and here on earth.
2) The Master is Shabd, Word, Nad, etc., all of which refer to the God-into-expression Power of light and sound principle. By having contact with this Power, man is led back to his true home.
3) For the sake of those who are disillusioned with life, and who yearn for permanent happiness and peace away from the world and its worries, the Word assumes a body to afford them solace. The Bible says, “Word was made flesh and dwelt amongst us.” Once a disciple contacts this Word (which is done at the time of Initiation by the Master), the audible form of this Word resides within him every moment of the day and night and never leaves him – not even after the end of man’s physical existence on earth. It will go with him and stay with him until he achieves the final goal. The Word is also known as the voice of God or the sound current, and is the Life impulse given by the Master at the time of Initiation. It may be heard as a sound coming from a distance and gradually develops into such sweetness that no music on earth can excel it. It is the Water of Life, the Spring of Immortality, the Elixir of Life, the Nectar of Spirituality, etc., that is spoken of in Holy Books.
4) Man has an inner eye with which he can see within himself all the higher regions when the veil is rent asunder by a competent living Master. In this state he remains perfectly conscious and undergoes amazing experiences. To ascend into the higher regions without a competent Master is fraught with dangers.
The repetition of the Holy Names is given to the disciple at the time of Initiation as a guard against all dangers. It acts also as a password to all spiritual planes, gives strength and sustenance to the body and mind during trouble and afflictions, brings the soul nearer to the Master, is instrumental in achieving concentration, and imparts many other diverse powers. Simran taught by a so-called master is just a bunch of words. But these very words become electrified when charged with the attention and grace of a real Master.
Initiation commences with the explanation and description of inner spiritual regions and the way in which the path is to be pursued. The opening of the inner vision to see the inner regions, with their distinct heavenly lights, together with the contact with the divine link or sound current, constitutes the practical side of Initiation. Daily practice of these, combined with Simran, is meditation. In addition to this, the Master gives instructions on pure and simple living, the need of devoting regular time to the practices, and other words of sound advice. The whole ceremony takes from two to three hours. Diaries of one’s spiritual progress must be kept and the mistakes of old and new disciples are corrected from time to time to insure progress.
A Mohammedan saint was asked whether he first saw God and then said his prayers or whether God came after his prayers. He said, “God comes first, then I pray.” He was asked how he knew that God had come. He said, “When my heart becomes full, my eyes begin to shed tears. I then think that He has come, that He is dragging me from within, then I pray.”

Once Akbar, who was a great Emperor of India, was told by his minister that thoughts were very potent and that great care should be taken in what we think of others. Akbar asked his minister how he knew this. The minister said, “All right, I will give you a concrete example. Let us go outside.” So both of them went outside and they saw one man coming towards them at a distance of a few furlongs. The minister said to the king, “Look here, just think something about this man in your mind and when he comes near, you might ask him what crossed his mind at that time. You are only to look and think.” The king thought in his mind that this man should be shot. The man approached the king and the king asked him, “When you saw my face, what thoughts crossed your mind?” The man said, “Emperor, excuse me, but I thought that I should beat you with my fists and break your head.” So thoughts are very potent. If you think evil of others, the other man will react. You should be careful how you speak to people. If you speak ill to another and say “You are a fool” and things like that, or if somebody calls you a name and you react in the same way, what is the result? There will be a flare-up. A man calls you once, twice and that results in a fight. This is by words, their very root is the thought. A man speaks out of the abundance of his heart. Whatever is lying there, those things take the form of words, then words lead to fighting. So don’t hurt the feelings of others, in thought, word or deed.

Selfless service is done in two ways. The first way is physical service. If somebody is sick, go and serve him. Shall I see somebody in need, hungry, naked, poor fellow? The Masters have always been for the poor, for the needy, to console them, to raise them up to the level of every man. If we do that, if everyone would share with others, there would be no poor in the world. Why are men so needy and hungry? Because we don’t share. So by sharing with others, our self expands. At the very moment of giving you feel a little joy within. That is the compensation you get, direct. But whenever you give, don’t give with the hope that you will have a return. Give for the sake of sharing with others. Sometimes we give for the reward that we will get in heaven. This is not the way, selfless giving is what is needed. This is one of the qualifications for one who would like to progress on the Spiritual way. So he is a man, who lives for others, who shares with others, with the needy, with the hungry, with those who are in very poor circumstances and cannot go on. What do we do? We feed our children very richly, while the children of our neighbours die of hunger. This is not what is wanted.
One of the Mohammedan saints, who happened to be a lady, once prepared to go to Mecca on pilgrimage. Mecca is a place of pilgrimage for Mohammedans and is located in Arabia. She had some money for the journey and as she was about start, she noticed some poor, hungry fellow in the neighbourhood. She gave away everything to him and so was not able to go to the place of pilgrimage. What was the result? An angel appeared to her and said that her pilgrimage had been accepted. You follow what is meant? The man who lives on his own earnings, earned by the sweat of his brow, honestly, and who shares with others, such a man only is fit to progress on the Spiritual way. Give not for the sake of compensation or return. Give for the sake of sharing with others. That is your duty towards your brothers and sisters.
A mother, whose children are hungry, will take out a morsel from her own mouth and give it to the children. She does not care for any return. So help others with that angle of vision, with that spirit. We give sometimes for show. That is only for name and fame. That charity is no charity. Christ said, “If one hand gives, the other hand should not know”. If one hand gives something, let not your other hand know about it. So this is what is meant by charity.

A man once went to Lord Buddha and began to insult Him like anything. He went on in this way for one, two, three hours, until it got dark. When night fell, he wanted to go away. So Lord Buddha said, “Well dear friend, just tell me one thing.” The man asked what Buddha wanted to know, to which Buddha replied, “If anybody brings some present to somebody and if that person does not accept it, with whom is it left?” The man replied, “With the person who brings that present.” “Well,” said Buddha, “the present you have brought, I don’t accept it.”
On His last Punjab-tour in October 1973, Sant Kirpal Singh visited the Agriculture Farm located near Nawanshar. There was one room made of mud and one Pacca-room beside a little room for the water-pump. Master stayed there nearly for fifteen minutes. He took water from the water-pump and a grain of rice. Then He blessed Kirpal Sagar which now has been built beside the Farm.
With due permission of the Master, the name Manav Kendra was changed to Kirpal Sagar before Sant Kirpal Singh left His physical body. Kirpal means ‘Grace’, Sagar means ‘Ocean’ – thus the name Kirpal Sagar means ‘Ocean of Grace’.
Master wants from heart that everyone should do the work (selfless service): Everyone should put his head and heart to do that work. It is His earnest desire, a desire from His heart, because He loves each child and wants to develop everyone. He is not having any connection with us on the physical level, but His contact is direct with the soul.
So blessed are those who are chosen for this purpose; they are very fortunate. Master always laid stress upon this subject (the importance of selfless service). Because in the lives of all competent Masters and their devotees, there was only one way: To live and to do for Him! And this is the ultimate goal. If the disciple is obliged to the Master, he says, “I have to do whatever my Master would tell me, it is my highest duty to obey His order.”
Background of Kirpal Sagar
The place which Sant Kirpal Singh has chosen for Kirpal Sagar has also a background which first was not known to us. When we started the construction work, people from the surroundings came to us, and one of them told that an old person had been living there whose name was Chattar Singh; he was considered to be mad. To that place the cows were taken for grazing, and he used to sit along with the boys there. He never would return to his home, he stayed overnight in the forest, which was full of snakes. There was also a certain animal which always attacks man. It is not injurious, but its teeth are very sharp. One time, when taking rest, he was bitten by this animal and his nose was bleeding. Those boys wanted to take him to the doctor nearby for dressing the wound, but he said, “No, there is a hospital, I have got it dressed over there.”
Sometimes the boys used to say, “Old man, you are smelling, you should take a bath.” He would reply, “Yes, here is a Sarovar, a holy tank, I’m always taking a bath there.” When they offered him to share their food, he answered, “No, there is a big common kitchen here, I always take the food from here.” All the time he used to tell such things, and he even said, “There is a big temple, a house of God.” So all people called him a mad person, who is seeing things where other people don’t see anything. Now those persons from the neighbourhood believe that he was a holy man.
So, holy places are already fixed by the Masterpower. Kings, premiers, and rich persons can create cities, but holy places are built only by the Masters, they are built in the omnipresence of the Masterpower. The guidance of the Master continues every moment, and in spite of many problems in the beginning the commissioned Manav Kendra could be constructed.
It belongs to all human beings of the world
Kirpal Sagar is a common ground for all people to get together, irrespective of caste, colour, creed, religion or country. It belongs to all human beings of the world. In Kirpal Sagar no religion but the basic teaching of all religions is taught, which is one and the same and has been written with one opinion.
To keep the various outer rituals and rites of the different religions with their basic signification is no bar to true religion. Every religion teaches the universal teaching of the universal link among all human beings – the Brotherhood of Men under the Fatherhood of God. Religion is a very smooth pattern and a way to realize one’s self, if one rises above the shackles of the religion.
Kirpal Sagar is neither being built in the memory of Sant Kirpal Singh, nor is it a personal wish. It was the wish of Sant Kirpal Singh which is being fulfilled by all devoted disciples of Him.
Moreover, who learns and yearns or who wants to learn and yearn can also work in Kirpal Sagar, as it is the work of God, done by man but inspired by God. This is the highest but the rarest chance that ever comes in the life of a human being.

Peace and harmony in your heart
Perhaps it will not be out of place to explain here the meaning of the term “spirituality,” which is often confused with blind faith in sacred books, a display of miracles, psychic phenomena, or yogic powers. Spirituality is an inner experience and its alphabet begins where all philosophy and yoga practices end. It is the experience of the soul. When one says, “I am the body,” it is a feeling based on the intellect and is defined as ignorance. When he says, “I am not the body, I am an awakened soul,” it is learnt knowledge or theory only; but when he gets an actual experience of the soul by self-analysis and contacts the Overself, it is called spirituality. The first practical lesson commences when there is a complete withdrawal from the physical body through the kindness of a practical Master. No one can withdraw and separate himself from the physical body unaided. If anyone claims otherwise and thinks that he can, he but deceives himself. All attempts without the assistance of a Master, who alone is qualified to impart this experience, will end in failure. Masters come to distribute this treasure of spiritual blessings to seekers after truth.
Spirituality cannot be bought or taught, but it can be caught by contact with spiritual people. Moreover, nature’s gifts such as air, water, light, etc., are free. Spirituality is also nature’s gift and is also given free by the Masters. Likewise, spirituality cannot be acquired from books, which is a fact all sacred scriptures uphold. Books are a valuable record of the inner experiences of others in spirituality. They fill up gaps in history and contain messages from past Masters, which help us to verify the facts revealed by a living Master, thus confirming our faith in the science. Man is confused by the various translations, interpretations and expositions, each different from the other, which instead of relieving his mind, tend rather to bewilder and confuse him. His egoism too has created hundreds of religious circles, whose aim is aloofness and narrow orthodoxy instead of love, and insularity instead of integration. Torn between conflicting emotions, men develop hatred and think of war.
For an understanding of the science of the Masters, we attend Satsang, where the majority of our doubts are cleared. Direct answers from the Master will help to remove any remaining doubts. All questions receive the same calm consideration and no arguments are offered. Rich or poor, high or low, all receive equal attention in the same manner as a doctor should attend to the sick. A true Master views a man’s rights and wrongs as clearly as one sees the contents of a glass jar, but He reveals nothing. Sitting before Him, even those who do not understand His language are benefited, just as one in a perfumer’s shop enjoys the smell of sweet scents. The Master showers blessings through His looks, which the eager ones catch. His eyes are a wonderful spray of love.
