When we make our Atman, our soul, happy, then God is happy. And when God is happy, we can also eat the fruit in this world. Day and night the colour of Master is within us. And when the soul enters inside and recognizes the Father or the inner Husband, then the soul has no more attachments to this body.

Then God says to the soul, “You have been fully identified with the outer form of the body but once you had been a hansa (swan) in the Sarovar.” Kabir Sahib said, “O hansa, make your inside clean.” And further, “(O soul), once you were travelling with the pure hansas, but when you came into this world, you came in contact with dust and dirt.” Master resides in us, and when our soul gets stable within, one can feel it. And this Kaaba (the body), where He resides, is far better than thousands of outer Kaabas. He sees us all the time and He is developing us.

When we go inside, He is with us, while we are in the body, He becomes our friend. This is the stream (of grace) that comes from the competent Master. And by His grace, we get the colour now.

Seeing His grace, tears come out of our eyes. For a long time, our Beloved has been waiting for us within. And He, who alone has made friendship with you, has not turned towards others.

When the soul enters His home inside, it prays, “O Master, I am the passenger who has come from very far, don’t send me from Your door without giving anything! Since I went into the world of Maya, I have forgotten You. Today You have met me, and I don’t want ever to be separated from You again.”

Why did Master explain so much about this body? The body is not an outer machine (of attachment and lust). Master often used to tell how the Master-power created and prepared this body.

We cannot realize Bhakti or devotion by speaking about it – we have to go within to attain and to know it. And for this, we need the company of and the contact with the competent Master, so that our eye, with which the Master-power has blessed us, can be opened – the eye, where Master Himself resides. And with this eye, He sent us into the world so that we can see. But where should we go? We must go to the place of the inner bhakti, we have to enter there. Then one forgets the body, and then there is nothing but the soul and Him.

Why do we come to this place? We come here in order to get His knowledge. This (outer) knowledge takes us only to the (inner) door, but the inner knowledge is within us.

This world is very small compared to the inner world. He created this world and the inner worlds. But how can we go inside and enter the inner worlds? Only with His light- and sound-principle. When the soul enters the place where Master’s treasure lies, He gives the fruit of His treasure to the soul. We can cross the inner place only with the help of that Power, which comes directly from Sat Lok.

As Tulsi Sahib says, “O soul, this world is full of sadness, as long as we do not enter the house of our Father, we cannot rise above.” And Guru Nanak Dev Ji said, “If the internal husband is not with you, you are in a condition as if you were burning in fire.” Do not be devoted to the body but be devoted to Him, who has created this body and who resides in it. If you are not aware of that, then you should obey your soul so that you may meet Him and your devotion will be perfect. It is very hard for you if you are not able to search for Him in your own house, in your body. This body is the house for the soul, it was made for the soul and for God. And when you clean it inside, you start searching, get Naam, when you do the hardship (of the meditation) of His Naam, you can become one with Him.

He has given so much power into this pot (this body) and the root of this house came directly from the place of Sat Lok and this is the reason why we are alive. And we should realize why the indweller of this house (the soul) is hungry and thirsty. How can we get power, if our soul is hungry and thirsty? Master says, “You have to care for your soul while you are alive. He who has built this house, is already inside of it. And you can only understand the purpose of your life while you are alive. But if you never give food to your soul, you can never get this power.”

If our soul remains hungry, we will not get any benefit. The soul has to stand inside before Master and declare how it has been cared for (in this body). And how do we have to care for this body? From inside as well as from outside you care for a vehicle or for other things. If you care for it and clean it, you can easily travel with it.

How great is this house – we can see Master’s colour and smell His fragrance in it! But this body is only of value as long as Atman, the soul, is within it. And only due to this you are powerful and strong and get the highest bliss from within.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji also spoke about this body and said, “O Nanak, who could praise You while he was in this world?” When one has become a Gurmukh, He gives the shower of His blessing. And if there had been no Gurmukh, nobody could have shown the competency of Guru Nanak. In the Gurmukh, there is also the soul and that gives the colour to him (the Gurmukh).

The whole world was created by Him, and for him who understands, it is not difficult to attain Him. And those people, who have a bad destiny and who cannot attain Him, they only weep in this world. The root of consciousness of the competent Master is in this world and He gives consciousness to everybody. And we all who are sitting here are part of His light. And the light of a Bhakta, a devotee, is of no use if Master’s light does not shine through him. There is no place where His light does not shine. No low power can approach one in whom the light of God has been lit.

Where is He to be found? We can only find Him in us, and there we have to search for Him. For ages and ages, man has been suffering but was unable to search for God in his own self.

God, who has blessed you with this body, who has created it, He made your heart His temple. He gave it to you as a present to live in it for a short time. And Master said, “In the same way as He had cleaned this body, which had been built by God, so you should also clean your heart.” We should not remain in the dirt forever, one time we have to reach our eternal Father. As long as the soul does not meet the Father again, He cannot be happy. This is the food of our life, which we can only get from our Father. This is the shining temple which is in us, and when you want to see Him, you can see Him there at any time. There is the flame of truth, and Master says, “O soul, you do not care for this temple where the flame is burning day and night. You are so busy with (outer) devotion and caring for the beauty of the gurdwara, mosque or church, but you do not see the inner temple. The human body, in which the Godpower resides all the time, is the highest in the creation.”

Then the soul replies, “O Beloved, how can I thank You with my words. You have created the whole world, so many bodies, and in everybody You reside. O my God, how great You are that You always think of this temple. You have given us the true heart, a place called Harki Pauri, where one can make the holy round-walk (the Parkarma).” What is Harki Pauri? When the soul goes back, it first takes a bath there. Harki Pauri is in us. When we close the eyes, we can see Him at this place. “A heart where You could take residence is better than thousands of holy places. If You had not blessed me with this body, You could not live in my heart.” He gave us the way of our life and made in us a place where He Himself can hide. Why is our temple a thousand times more colourful (than any outer temple)? Because He, the giver of Naam, is within us and He is giving this colour to us. He gives us Naam. This temple has not been built by our hand but by Master’s hand. Therein our Beloved gave us the water of His blessing, of His grace, and with the grace of His Naam, He made it strong like concrete. With the hardship (in the meditation) of His Naam, the light always shines in this temple. This is the temple of our competent Father, the treasure of His intoxication is always there! There is only one Sakhi (cupbearer), one Satguru, and one pot from where He distributes it. He made this pot out of His hardship. And when the soul has been dyed in this colour, one can see the soul shining in this temple. There the soul bows down and cries, “O God, You have always been residing in me, and I was only wandering around in the whole world. Without Your grace, nobody can find You!” The soul further says, “You have sent us into this world, You fill (the pot with Your colour) and You reside in us, but You keep the key in Your hand. … I know only one place where I can bow down: where day and night the hidden inner melody is going on in us.”

With Master’s sound-current the soul rises above and then it says, “Today I could see that there is only one place where I can bow down my head, one place for the devotion to Him, where Your inner light always shines. If You do not bless and guide us – with the outer ways we cannot go and reach inside. Only with Your grace can we rise above our body.” This world is like a jungle, and when we rise above the body, we cross thousands of moons, stars, and suns.

When Master takes us to the seat of the soul, He takes the burden of His soul. If a Master is not able to take the burden of the soul, He is not competent. When the Master takes over the burden, the soul becomes very light and can go within. As long as we do not get the second birth from Master, the initiation, He cannot take our burden. Only with the power of Naam, with the initiation is the soul’s burden removed. Only with His power can we go on the inner journey. Only when He gives His full grace does the door to the inner knowledge open.

Naam is a crest jewel

“His grace, Naam, or you may say His love – it is one and the same. It is a crest-jewel, and Master comes as a jeweler in the world. He also comes in the market to sell that very crest-jewel. A lot of people come, but no one dares to buy that crest- jewel, because it is priceless. So, the whole world is full of artificial diamonds also. They say, ‘Yes, it is good – it appears like diamonds, so it is good.’”

The whole world is dealing in such affairs and no one is true to himself – what to say of others! How can one be true to the Master? How can we buy that crest-jewel? It is very difficult.+

Naam is within us

“Where is He (God) to be found? We can only find Him in us, and there we have to search for Him. For ages and ages, man has been suffering but was unable to search for God in his own self.

One should have such an eye that can see Him so that He can take us where He is. Our inner husband resides at this place, and our eye should become one with Him. Then our soul says, “I have nothing to do with the world, I only need Your eyes.” When we rise above the body and come on this path, the Master-power, the Godpower, who resides behind the two eyes, takes the child in His lap. And when after so many ages the soul meets God, there is no limit to the inner happiness. Then there is no more difference between soul and Master – it becomes one with Him. When all the coverings have been removed, one does not differentiate any longer; you love everybody as your own self. Then there are no enmities and no ill feelings against anyone.”

We all have gathered here to have the darshan (sight) of the competent One. By His darshan our destiny can be changed, our luck can be changed. He is not far, He resides in our heart. He even quenches the thirst of those who wish to see Him physically. Such a competent Master is in us, not outside. Whoever has attained Him, has only attained Him within this body.

The outer love and attachment is only very short, and therefore we suffer. The Satguru opens the inner way according to the background of His disciple. And He brings us to the Satsang only to raise us above this physical world. With the power of His colour, by His Naam, we are able to rise to the higher spiritual regions and to see the radiant form of the Master. A Master who gives such a fragrance to us always remains with us.

First, we should know our purpose and should know the meaning of the religion into which we were born. We should not be bound to the outer religion (dharma) and thus get entangled in this world. The Mahapurushas come into this world to raise us above with their inner light. The competent Master has made a place in our heart. How can we get it (the highest bliss)? The problem is that we have gone far away from the highest bliss that we have to get from Him. We have separated from the highest Power and have taken a different way, and now our boat is drifting in the Bhav Sagar (the terrible ocean of the three worlds).

Nobody knows where He has come from and where He will go. Whoever has got Him, could get Him in the physical world, in the physical body. The human body that we have got, is the highest in the whole creation. When someone could get in contact with God, then only while being in this physical body.

Master says, “O soul, the time to meet Him is not far.” The ocean of His love is overbrimming in the heart of the Master, and only with His full power can we attain Him.

Now … that is why they are just under delusion and always receiving impressions from outside. The man whose fate is like that, how can he escape from receiving impressions from outside, through the outgoing faculties? Whoever is in that state of affairs, naturally he is affected by outside life – all these impressions from outside. He has already become unclean or black-sooted, you see. In a house where there is black soot all around him, naturally he will have that very black colour. Those who do not yearn for God – why is it so? Because, on account of that, first, they are under a grand delusion; and moreover, from day-to-day, they are gathering impressions from outside. They are already black, and more black is being added. So they cannot even recognize the Masters, too, as I told you before. But those whose inner eye is opened see God working in all creation. We are waylaid by the outer changes of the world, as I told you yesterday. And all at once somebody passes away: “What is all that?” Such people (whose single eye is open) see this changing panorama – the body is also changing and we have to leave this body some day – but they are not affected. They are in the world: their boat is in the water, but water is not in the boat. (Do you see) the reason why? The boat has so many holes in it; if they are all closed, then the water won’t enter the boat, and the man sitting in the boat won’t be drowned. If there are holes, then the water will enter, and the boat will sink; and along with that, the man also sinks.

This man-body is the boat given to us to cross over the ocean of life. If there are other outlets from outside, which are our outgoing faculties, through which all impressions can come within us. As I told you the other day, about eighty percent of the impressions are received through the eyes. Fourteen percent from the ears, and the other from other senses. So, naturally, every day, from day-to-day, from hour-to-hour, he (the average person) is just under delusion, more delusion, and (still) more delusion. But those who rise above these outgoing faculties, with the grace of God or with the grace of the God-in-man, don’t receive impressions from outside. They use these outgoing faculties at their will and pleasure, whereas the average man is being dragged away by these outgoing faculties. Outward enjoyments drag the outgoing faculties, and the outgoing faculties drag the mind. Mind is dragging our soul. The Masters, when they come, give the right way out: they give you a first-hand demonstration of how to rise above body-consciousness and all of your outgoing faculties. When you have a permanent seat here (behind the physical eyes), then outward impressions do not affect you: there are no holes in the boat to drown you. The boat may fill with the water of impressions from outside. So the Masters are in the world – they appear to be in the world – but they are not of it. This is what you get from the society, from the Satsang, from the company of the Saints. This is what they give you. They also give you higher contact with the nectar, the water of life, by raising you above these outgoing faculties at the back of the (physical) eyes. That (contact with the water of life within) has more taste; and when mind gets more taste within, all of the other enjoyments leave; he is not affected by the outer enjoy­ments. This is the blessing that you have at the feet of the Master, from the Satsang.

Satsang does not mean your bodies are sitting by Him and your minds are wandering outside. I give you an example of two friends. They were going out, and one had a strong mind to attend church. The other friend said, “I want to go to the play-ground.” Each had his own way. One went to the church; the other went to the play-ground. Now, the man sitting in the church was thinking, “My friend must be kicking the football.” His body was there, but his mind was elsewhere. The man in the play-ground was thinking, “He must be saying his prayers now.” So who is the better of the two? To sit by the Master just like that does not give you an effect. You don’t even receive the radiation because you are not receptive. So, Master defines how to attend a Satsang.

Soamiji says, “Hold a Satsang, attend some Satsang meeting.” How? “When you go there, forget the world outside. When you sit there, forget all environment – who is sitting by you. When you sit there, you forget your body, too. Your whole attention should be absorbed! Eyes are the windows of the soul!” Masters define how to attend a Satsang! Instead, when attending so many Satsangs, why do we not derive full benefit? Because our bodies are there, of course, but we are not there: our attention is outside – in the play-ground. So, Soamiji says the right way to attend the Satsang is just like that (with full, absorbed attention). To be at a Satsang (physically) is not sufficient; your mind may be wandering outside, while your body is there. Another man sits there – whole-hearted, with whole attention: “The eyes are the windows of the soul” – (and absorbs) by radiation. If you are receptive, you will be affected (by radiation). So, Soamiji says, this is how we can derive full benefit from the company of the Satsang.

Guru Nanak has extended a loving invitation to all. The Master tells us that we have a purpose in life. Have we ever cared to think why we have been granted this physical existence? Human birth is really a great blessing. Man is the roof and crown of all the creation. Man is a rational being, and this is what differentiates man from the rest of the creation. He has been gifted practically with the faculty of discrimination to distinguish between right and wrong. It is for him to make the best use of his intellect and develop in him consciousness of the soul, which is lying dormant at present. Guru Nanak, therefore, reminds us that to attain Amrit, the divine nectar or the water of life, we should go to a living Master, who has access to the spiritual fountainhead and is competent to lead us to it. The living Master enjoys a supreme status. He is the very life and light of humanity. “Son knows the Father and those whom the Son reveals,” says Christ. The Master-souls are the children of light and come to diffuse the holy light among those who come to them. The Vedas pose a pertinent question: What is that thing having attained which one is fully satisfied and desires nothing else? And then go on to explain that the crown of life is the realization of God, attaining which one enjoys perpetual bliss and harmony. Soul is a conscious entity. It is a drop of the ocean of all-consciousness. It is gifted with all the attributes of the Lord. Kabir tells us that it is of the same essence as that of God. Muslim divines regard it as Amar-i-Rabbi, or the essence of God. It is due to the misdirected attitude of mind that it is overtaken by wild passions. So, when the soul is analyzed from the body and liberated from the meshes of the mind and matter, it can, once again, wing its way to the elixir of life within. It is the holy Naam – the holy Shabd or the audible life stream that the Master reveals to those who come to Him. It is the central theme of His teachings.

You may better understand it through a parable. Criminals are sent to the prison to serve their allotted sentence. A dignitary goes there and finds that the prisoners do not have adequate living quarters. He sanctions a large amount for the construction of good ventilated rooms for them. Another one goes there and discovers that the food for the prisoners is no good. He allots more funds for this purpose and the inmates are served with good food. Both of them have done a good deed, each in their own way. Another man – the master of the prison – goes there with the prison keys in his hand. Out of compassion he opens the prison gate and allows the prisoners to escape if they like. You will agree that the last man has done a magnificent service by providing the prisoners an opportunity to be free again. The world is a large prison-house where each one of us is serving his term, the allotted span of life. We are mightily engaged in the various pursuits of life with no knowledge of the free life beyond the prison walls. The Master has the key into the realms beyond; and when He comes, He throws open the door of the prison-house and invites us to take our chance of breathing the free air outside. Those who take the chance are blessed indeed. In the succeeding verses, we will know of various factors that qualify a person to gain liberation for the soul.

Leave off artificiality, all outer forms and thy wit, for in duality and uncertainty you cannot get any spiritual benefit.

The Master tries to pull us out of our deep slumber. In compassion, He shows us the way to freedom. He asks us to simplify our life. It is a blessing to be born in a temple, but a sin to die in it. Just as discussed earlier, it is necessary to remain in the religion to which one belongs; but while remaining there, one must learn to rise above all religious and social barriers, expand the self so that it embraces the entire humanity, nay all the creation, and realize the principle of the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man. Once a person rises above body and bodily limitations, blinkers fall from his eyes and he sees his Self in all and all in his Self. All the narrowing prejudices of nationality, race, and tribe sink far below, for now he belongs to the one great family of man. We take up certain religious beliefs with the purpose of spiritual enlightenment; but after some time, we find to our regret that we are bypassing the very purpose of life and are caught up in a vicious circle of forms and formalities. One must be cautious to see which way the wind blows and how he is faring. Again, I want to emphasize that the basic concept of all religions – spiritual enlightenment – should never be lost sight of. We must keep the bull’s eye constantly before us if we are out to be a good marksman. A lover of the Lord must, therefore, love God with all his soul, with all his mind, and with all his might. Too much of formalisms and formalities will necessarily bring in doubt, suspicion, and duality. There is a world of difference between an intellectual and a spiritual man. The two are poles apart. A philosopher deals with theories, while a mystic deals with the reality alone. Hence the need for disenfranchising the self from all limiting adjuncts that keep the soul smothered under the dead weight of rites and rituals.

O mind, be thou still and not run into the wilderness.

It is in the stillness of the mind that one can see the face of divinity. A close study of the subject will show that the mind is generally in the grip of the senses and the latter are helplessly rushing out into the fields of sense-pleasures. In the Hindu mythology, soul is described as riding a chariot of the body with intellect as its driver, the mind as reigns, and the senses as powerful steeds which are whirling it restlessly into sensual enjoyments. So the first step for a spiritual aspirant is to control his senses and save himself from falling unwittingly as prey to the temptations. It is said that we receive 83 percent of our impressions through the eyes, 14 percent through the ears, and rest of the three percent through other organs. Just see how needlessly we are rushing head long into the wild drama of life! The Master not only guides us on how to free ourselves from this captivity, but actually offers a better substitute to the mind in the form of inner light and sound current or the music of the spheres.

Those who want to have a glimpse of God don’t care for these heavens or anything like that; they don’t even care for redemption from life – from coming and going (reincarnation), too. They simply want to have a glimpse of Him. Bhai Nand Lal was such a devotee of the tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh. He says, “O my Guru, my Satguru, I had no desire to come to the world but to follow You. As You have come to the world, I also followed You. Otherwise, what is lying in this world? You have incarnated, You are manifesting in the man-body here; so as I was fond of You, I also have come to the world to be with You.” Hafiz is a great poet, mystic poet. He said, in Arabic, in one poem: “O man, if you want to come in contact with God, leave all worldly things. Go out to some lonely place to find Him, to go within you.” And Nand Lal addresses Hafiz: “Look here, Hafiz, God is standing here. Here is God-in-man. Why should we leave this world and go to outside things? Here is God standing!” Well, this is the fate of those whose inner eye is open, you see. (It is the same God when He appears within.) Excuse me, they were persecuted like Christ. Were they not persecuted? Mansur was put to the stake. Shamaz-I-Tabrez’s skin was taken off. Some were burned alive. Who did all this? Who did all this? (Those) whose (inner) eyes were not open. The others (those whose single eye is open) do say, “He (the Master) is the moving God-on-earth.” They say, they see God is manifesting in Him. But when is it said? When your inner eye is open. So those who want a glimpse of Him (God), they never care for the possessions or all enjoyments of this world, or the world hereafter. They can only be satisfied if they have a glimpse of Him – that’s all.

Take the example of a mother whose son has been away. She yearns to see her son – perhaps he is lost. There may be people who give evidence saying, “He is alive; I have seen him.” (The mother says), “O no, unless I look at him I cannot be satisfied.” You see? Something, a strong yearning like that. I mean to say those who are yearning really to see God. Man’s highest goal is to have a beatific vision of God, to see God. This is the ultimate goal of what the Saints pray for. “See and then say.” If you don’t see …? Sometimes in prayers we sit, we shed tears, we cry; when that very thing for which we yearn and cry comes in front of you, how satisfied you feel!

So whatever you are doing, all of these practices outside which relate to the outgoing faculties, body, or intellect, in that you do not see. You simply feel a strong yearning to see so. Surat Shabd Yoga gives you a vision of that Power. All other yogas I mentioned have got different scopes. In Surat Shabd Yoga you have got direct contact with the God-into-expression-Power. If you pursue that way, regularly, with all devotion, He will always be face-to-face with you. He resides with you. Whenever you want to, you close your eyes, rise above body (-consciousness) and then see Him. Guru Ram Das tells us, “This is the state of those who really want to see God.” They are not after this world’s possessions. They simply want to have a glimpse of Him. That is the fate of few. How many people are seen crying, breaking their heads, for worldly things. But how many are there who are crying to see God? Rama Krishna Paramhansa tells us, “If a man continues three days regularly in his yearning for the Lord, God will appear to him.” We cannot even yearn for an hour. So the point is, you see, those who are after having a vision of God – beatific vision – no other thing can appeal to them. They are not satisfied unless they see. But others, the world is full of them – why don’t they yearn to see God? The reason is they are under a grand delusion. That delusion starts from where? From the man-body. He is the indweller of the man-body, but he is identified with the body so much so that he has forgotten himself. He works from the level of the man-body, which is made of matter and matter is changing every moment of life. And the world around is also changing, being of matter, at the same speed as our body is changing.

So, when two things are moving at the same speed, to those who are identified with it, to them this appears that it is all stationary. It is a grand delusion. Take the example of a boat in which some people, say five, six, seven or so, are rowing. The boat is going down the stream. One man is standing on the side (shore) of the river. He cries out, “Dear friends, you are rowing down the stream!” They look at the water around it, and the boat appears to be stationary – not moving. Is it not a grand delusion? The learned and the unlearned, both are under a grand delusion.

God – an ocean of all consciousness

God is described as the one supreme being, the unmanifest-manifested, the eternal verity, the conscious spirit pervading all forms that emanate from Him – He upholding all creation, but is immanent in every form.

God is nameless, absolute, but when He wished to become from one to many, His power came into expression. That power is known as Naam in the terms of the Masters. It is also known as Shabd, as Kalma, as Word, and other names. That power is the creator of all things, it is controlling all things.

God is an ocean of all consciousness. We are of the same essence as that of God: a drop of the ocean of all consciousness.

What is God, and how can we know Him?

“He is One, He is the First. He is all that is. His name is Truth. He is the Creator of all,
fearing naught striking fear in naught. His form on lands and waters is Eternity; the One Self-existent.
Through the grace of His true servant, continually repeat His Name. He was in the beginning; He is through all ages,
And He shall be the One who lives forever more.”

Let me introduce myself, I have come to you as a man to man. I am just as any of you are. Of course, each man has got the same privileges from God. I developed in a way that concerns my own Self. What I learned at the feet of my Master about my own Self, the real Self, I will put before you so that those who are seeking after Truth may find some guidance.

As a child, I had that awareness in me: “What is the mystery of life?” I sought to find the solution in books. I may tell you that I had the opportunity of going through almost two libraries and also going through the holy scriptures of almost all the religions, or the majority of them, I would say. There were very good descriptions given there, but I could not find the practical solution of my problem.

What I came to know at the feet of my Master, I will be putting before you in the course of four talks. The subject of each talk will be a little bit different.

Today we will deal with “God and Man.” The next three talks will deal with “Higher Values of Life,” “Kingdom of God,” and lastly “The Most Natural Way to Enter the Kingdom of God.”

From a careful and unbiased study of the sacred books of the world we find that there is one Reality, which is our goal. That Reality is termed God and by various other names.

God made man and man made worldly religions. Such religions were made for the uplift of man. We have to make the best use of them so that ultimately we may know ourselves and then know God.

Religion has two aspects: One is the social side, or the outward side. The other aspect is the inner religion, the spiritual side. We have to start with outer forms of religions. Man is social; he must remain in some society.

Each society has its own various ceremonies and rituals, its own scriptures, its own mode of saying prayers. This is the non-essential side. We have to remain in’ some social religion because man is a social being – and to remain in some social religion is a blessing. But that is an elementary step – our going to churches or other holy places of worship, saying prayers, reading the scriptures, observing certain ceremonies, and rituals. All these go to create love in us for God.

But if our performance of rituals, reading of the scriptures or attending the churches or other holy places of worship does not even create in us love of God and constitutes mere mental gymnastics, these lead us nowhere. That does not mean that you are not to live in any social religion. You are to do so. If you revolt against it, you will have to form another society.

Suppose there are ten thousand people of your views. Then you will have to form a separate society and make certain rules to go by. After some time you find that a certain rule has proved defective and must be amended. So you go on amending the rules.

All the same this has to do with your outer selves. The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Similarly, social religions were made for man, but man was not made for social religions. The purpose of remaining in any social religion is just to know oneself and then to know God. That is one aspect of religion. The other aspect is the observance of certain rituals and ceremonies. These vary in different religions, but you will find their purpose is nearly the same.

For example, in some churches to sit bareheaded is a mark of respect. In India, to sit with one’s head covered is a sign of respect. That is a custom there. Apparently, there is a difference between the two observances, but the purpose is the same. Both signify that whenever you sit in the presence of God, just remembering Him, you should sit in a respectful posture.

These are, however, non-essentials. The purpose is the same, no doubt. Apparently, some differences exist, but those differences do not affect in any way the purpose of the church.

Those who follow the letter of the rule, simply forget the spirit and fight only for the apparent differences. In Arabia, where there is a dearth of water, there is a custom that whenever you say prayers, you should just wash your hands, feet, face, and then sit for prayers. In other countries where there is an abundance of water, they say that until you take a bath, it will not be right to sit for prayers. That is only an apparent difference on account of the climatic or geographical conditions of the place.

We have to live in some social religion. So it is better to remain where you are. Do not change, if it can be helped. While there, what should you do? Just read the holy scriptures – the sayings of the Masters – you have, and try to understand what they say, and live up to them.
This is what you find: All Masters who came in the past were the children of Light, and came to give Light to the world. They did not come for any special religion or special country. They came for all humanity.

It is now time to cast aside the trivial differences that exist – the non-essentials. We should just look to the purpose for which they were made, and open our eyes to the Reality that we are all worshipping the same God. These were meant to represent that Reality which exists.

Now you will find, from the standpoint of all religions, that God the absolute is beyond what is known and manifested. That is something even beyond what is supporting and creating all creation. That Reality is at the back of everything. Can we search Him or find Him? No. He cannot be searched. He is unsearchable.

Canst thou by searching find out God? Canst thou find out the Almighty? The Almighty is inexpressible and cannot be expressed in words.

Names are simply given by the Masters to express that Reality, which is really inexpressible. He is the Changeless One. You find: “Forever more, O Lord, Thy Word existed in Heaven.” Forever more – that is the lasting Reality and that is the Changeless One. Ultimately, it is unconditioned and undivided. He is the Nameless One.

All names are holy. We have respect for all names, although God is the Nameless One. By whatever name you call Him with devotion and faith, He will make appearance and you will come in contact with Him. But names refer to a Reality that cannot be expressed in words.

All Masters have tried to express that Reality, each defining in his own way. Almost all definitions of God are parallel. They all say that God is the first and the last, from which nothing can be excluded, and to which nothing can be added. God is omniscient, omnipresent, and the primal cause – the causeless cause – the seat of all things; existence in itself. That cannot be created. That is is already in existence.

In the Koran, the Prophet Mohammed says: “There is no variableness in God, since He is eternal, immortal, infinite.”

That is unchangeable permanence and everlasting Reality. These words only seek to express, however imperfectly, the great Reality that is at the back of all.

Ever since the Masters first came, they have been trying to express that Reality and chanting praises of the Lord – these have formed the subject of our holy scriptures. But still they say He is as unsaid as ever. For thousands of years, the Masters have been explaining in their own words whatever is possible.

How can the inexpressible be expressed in words? That is the subject of experience you may have, through contact with that Reality. But if even our outer emotions cannot be described in words, how can that Reality be expressed in words? That is why it has always been said that God is inexpressible. There is the same Reality working throughout all creation. Until we have had some experience of that Reality, we will not know what it is like. What we now know is only what is given in books: we have had no first-hand experience of it.

All Masters say: It is the beginning and the end. In Isaiah it is stated: I am the first and I am the last, and besides me there is no God.

Again, we find: I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending.., which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

These are definitions given to show that Reality is unchangeable permanence, which has no beginning and no end. God has no beginning and no end.

But until we have an experience of Reality, we cannot be convinced. Ever since the world began, Masters have been coming and giving explanations to the best of their ability to the people. But with all that they always said that He is as unsaid as ever.

Guru Nanak has put it very aptly:

He is One, He is the First. He is all that is.
His name is Truth. He is the Creator of all,
fearing naught striking fear in naught.
His form on lands and waters is Eternity; the One Self-existent.
Through the grace of His true servant, continually repeat His Name.
He was in the beginning; He is through all ages,
And He shall be the One who lives forever more.

You see that he says the same thing. All Masters, as they have said, had experience of that Reality. Of course, when they gave their descriptions, they expressed It in their own language and in their own way. But you will find that the salient features of whatever they expressed are the same.

Then further Guru Nanak says:

He is beyond thought.
No thinking can conceive Him.

Now the question is: Can we search for Him within the finite pale of our intellect? No, He is beyond thought, no thinking can conceive Him. Not even if the minds of men should think for ages and ages. Then how can we know God? Our bodies, emotions and intellects should first be stilled. Only then the revelation will dawn, you will then know who you are. When you know who you are, you will be able to know and see what God is. That is why Guru Nanak said if you want to grasp Him within the pale of your finite intellect, He cannot be seen.

It is something like the story of the tortoise of the river, who went into a pond. There was another tortoise there. The river tortoise said, “Look here, the sea is very great and has no end.” The tortoise in the pool just stepped back and said: “Is it so much?” “No,” said the other, “It is still greater.” Then again he stepped back a little more, and questioned: “Is it so much?” And the other answered, “No, it is still greater.” Then, he went around the whole pool of water and said, “Is it so much?” The other said, “No, it is still greater.”

The tortoise of the pool was all wrong, you see, because his experience only extended to that pool of water, nothing more. Similarly, the Masters have always been saying that Divine Knowledge was limitless and they cannot expect to do justice to the subject.

The Lord is God. If you call Him anything, you simply want to bring Him within the finite ambit of your intellect. When that Reality is infinite, how can we express It in finite terms? This is what all Masters have been saying. Further, Guru Nanak says: He cannot be conceived.

The Upanishads say: To grasp that Reality within the pale of your intellect is as impossible as trying to quench your thirst by drinking wine. At another place, it is said: . . . or just as if you can squeeze out oil from sand. Both are impossible. Similarly, to bring Him within your intellect, and understand Him fully is not possible.

The Masters did give us something to understand That which could not be expressed in words. By their grace we can just form some idea about Him. They bring us in contact with that Reality when we enter into the Kingdom of God. Then we have some experience of Him. After that we can say there is something.

Guru Nanak says: I am just like a fish in the ocean. I do not know which is one end or the other. Similarly, we cannot grasp Him within our finite intellects.

Nor can He be known by gaining the worlds, for man’s desire is never
satiated, even though all the worlds laden with gold fall to his share.
No human thoughts can carry man far.
The movements of his mind, the thousand acts of wisdom of the world leave him dark, nothing avails.
Vain are the ways of man. How then to find Him? Man feels helpless.

Ever since the world began, all Masters have been saying the same thing. We have so many scriptures at our command, so many pages of the books of God that have been written. There will be many more as each Master comes and describes his contact with God or Reality. From their God intoxication, they pour out whatever comes, of high inspiration, just to give us the knowledge of Reality they have seen. Man has been trying to follow that but has failed.

Then, how can we see Him? Ever since the world began, this has been the fate of man. Unless we see God, the question remains, what is God?

Kabir says there is one Reality in all, supporting all creation, immanent in every form. With That immanent in every form, why do we differ? Why are there so many wars, so many religions everywhere?

The reason is that when a Master came he had some experience of that Reality. To the people who met him, he simply gave them a first-hand experience of that Reality. When he left the scene – to err is human, you see – some persons gathered together and they had their own way of thinking. So changes occurred.

Again, another Master came, he found dross was added to Reality, to the teachings of the earlier Master. He thrashed out that dross and again let the people know the truth about Reality, to some extent. Again, another religion started.

The Masters never started any creed. They only gave out to the people: There is one God and you should love Him. How can you love anybody until you see him, get some good out of him? Mere feelings or emotions are simply inferences arrived at by intellectual wrestling. They will not give you any definite satisfaction. They will be wavering. Sometimes you may accept these inferences, but they are all subject to error. Unless you see Reality, come in contact with It first-hand and derive the bliss of It, ineffable and direct, enjoy happiness within – only then will you have love for Him, after having tasted the elixir of that Reality.

When the Masters come what do they tell us? St. John says: God cannot be seen with thine eyes. But then you find that some Masters said they saw God. The question was put to Guru Nanak: “Do you see God?” He replied: “I see God. He is everywhere.” Christ also said: “Behold the Lord.” He pointed to the Lord, saying: “There, behold Him.” No reasoning.

The same question was also put by Swami Vivekananda. He was initially an atheist and challenged everybody: “Is there a God? Is there any man who has seen God?”

In those days, there was a man of realization, Paramahansa Ramakrishna, and he was asked to go to him. Vivekananda went to him and asked: “Master, have you seen God?” The sage replied: “Yes, my child, I see Him as I see you, even more clearly than that.” And he came in time to be a great theist. In the latter days of his life, Vivekananda confessed: “Because of that Godman I was saved.”

You will find that those who profess to be theists are, truly speaking, not so. We have simply learnt in our scriptures that there is God. We have heard this many times, but we have not seen Him. Unless we see something, we cannot be convinced.

When difficulties arise, the vicissitudes of life come up and we have to pass through them, we are bewildered and ask “Is there a God?” We become sceptics. But once you have seen, you have had some experience of Reality, you cannot have any doubt.

The Masters say: “We see Him.” But what are those eyes with which He can be seen?

Shams-i-Tabrez, a Muslim saint, tells us that we should be able to see God with our own eyes and hear His voice with our own ears. You find in the Bible: We have eyes and see not.

What are those eyes? Guru Nanak was asked: “You say you see God everywhere.” He replied: “Those eyes with which you see God are different.” What are those eyes with which you can see God? Those are not outer eyes, but that eye which is within each one of us. That eye is called by Christ the “Single Eye.” The eye is the light of the body. If thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. The Hindu scriptures and sayings of other Masters tell us of the Third Eye, or the latent eye. That eye is within each one of us. That one eye is not of the flesh and bone, as those we have outside on our faces.

Guru Nanak defines a blind man as not the one who does not have eyes on his face, but one whose inner eye is not open to see the Light of God.

God cannot be expressed. That absolute state can be had only when you rise into that Reality. But when this Supreme Power is the cause of all creation, immanent in all forms, supporting and maintaining them, It expresses itself in two ways – Light and Sound – and that expression of the God-power is an actual experience of Godmen within. It is said, God is Light. The Mohammedans also say that God is “Noor,” i.e., Light. They say that one who goes above and beyond the physical body and sees the Light of God within is a true Muslim. The Christian can also be defined in the same way; one who sees the Light within is a true Christian. The tenth Guru of the Sikhs says the same thing: Those who see the effulgent Light of God within are true Sikhs, or true “fakirs.” They are pure ones. You will find the same definitions given in all religions, in all the holy scriptures: Have you seen the Light within you? Again, they have said: If you shut the doors of the temple of the body, you will see the Light of Heaven. It is a possibility.

All the scriptures tell us of the Light of God within. The Voice of God also reverberates in each one of us. There is a way in which we may have an experience of that Reality and its expression. That is the way back to God. Has our closed inner eye been opened or not? That is the question. Unless that inner eye be opened, we cannot see the Light of God within us. It is a question of introversion and inversion.

The ultimate goal of all religions is God, and that we should be able to see God. Leaving the non-essentials, what do they tell us? They say, Love thy God. This is said by all the religions. When you see and come in contact with God, only then, truly speaking, can you love God. At present, your loving God is practically impossible. Simply on the emotional side, you sometimes say certain things, but you have no contact with that Reality, and true love does not arise, and does not last.

When the Pharisees and the Sadducees went to Christ they returned in silence, because an intellectual man speaking to a man of realization cannot stand before him. While the latter sees certain things and then speaks, the intellectual man simply quotes verses from the holy scriptures which he has read, and afterwards he cannot reconcile things.

Naturally, when they came to Christ, they became quiet. Then they gathered together and came up to Him.
“Now, Master, what is the greatest commandment in the law?” What did he say? Jesus said unto them:

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy
soul and with all thy might. This is the first and greatest of all
commandments. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love
thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all
the law and the prophets.

The ultimate teaching of all social religions is just to love God. As God resides in every heart, love all humanity, all creation. For the love of God, you are to love all humanity. If we have love for all humanity, all other commandments follow. He whom you love, are you going to kill him? Are you going to rob him of his property? Are you going to bear false witness against him? No, not in the least.

So on these two commandments hang all other commandments. The Sermon on the Mount, the Eightfold Path of the Buddha, the Niyama yama and Sadachar of the Hindus all speak of the same thing, in their own languages and, of course, in their own ways.

If we live up to what the scriptures say, there will be peace on earth, and the Kingdom of God will surely come on earth. Then there will be no danger of any war. What a pity: these things are given in our holy scriptures, but we follow, if at all, the letter of the law at the cost of the spirit. That is the cause of discord.

All Masters came to unite men, not to separate man from man. They were the lovers of God, and they taught men how to love all humanity. You will see, this is one side of the thing that we have before us. We are to love all humanity because God resides in every heart.

The holy scriptures, with all the rest of the sayings about the various aspects of God, have not been able exactly to say what God is. Some phase of it, some part of it they did express, out of loving devotion. But from there we can only deduce some idea of God.

Man’s highest thought of God never has and never can measure the Eternal, but it constitutes self-revelation. Your highest thought of God is not the measure of God, but the measure of our own hitherto unknown propensities. Each Master has been saying the same thing: When I attempt to speak of the highest, I cannot. I become as one dumb. How then can we express it? Even out of the love and intoxication they have of Reality, they give out something, but it still remains as unsaid as ever.

This is what the scriptures lay down. I told you this is the outer aspect of religion – social religions. When you think that God resides in every heart, you will not kill anyone. You will respect each man, when you know for certain that God resides in every heart.

When we live up to what the scriptures say, we should all love God. Naturally, we will have respect for all others, for all living things.

The human body is a true temple of God, in which God resides. The body is the true temple of God. All Masters say so. If the body is the true temple of God, how then can we destroy or kill it?

Wrong preachings are given by ministers of the various religions instead of giving out the truths which are already in our scriptures. They have been simply proclaiming that their religion, their fold, is the highest and others are in the wrong. The result is, division between man and man and, of course, clashes between class and class. They will be ready, excuse me, just to destroy so many true temples of God – human bodies – for the outer temples which we raise with our own hands.

God resides in temples not made with hands. He resides in the true temple of the body that you are carrying. Of course, we are to maintain our outer temples (bodies) and keep them clean and chaste. These bodies are the temples of God. If the right preaching is given you will see love between man and man. Paid services, in almost all religions, I would say, have gone to make matters worse.

Now, some people think that they have special privileges. Well, God gave equal privileges to all. You see the outer form. Each has two eyes, two nostrils, two ears, a mouth, two arms, two feet and two legs. The outer construction is the same, and the inner construction is also the same. Each man has lungs, stomach, brain. God has given equal privileges to all. They are born the same way; they die the same way.

When men suffer from fever, irrespective of whether they belong to one religion or another or one country or another, they suffer the same way, and there is the same remedy to cure their fever. When you go to a doctor, an adept in medicine, and tell him that you have fever, he gives you some medicine. He will give the same treatment to anyone else for the same trouble.

I mean that the outer expression, the outer privileges, are the same for each man, as given by God. The inner privileges are also the same. We are souls. God is a limitless Ocean of All-consciousness. We are conscious entities, drops of the Ocean of Life. Of course, our conscious self is hemmed in by mind and matter. It is given over so much to the organs of sense and identified with the body that we cannot now differentiate ourselves from the body.

The inner disease is also the same. Masters are physicians of the souls which have been given over to the influences of mind and matter. They tell us how to analyze the soul from the outgoing faculties, from the organs of sense, and rise above body-consciousness to know oneself, enter into the Kingdom of God and know God. All mankind suffers from the same disease.

Well, for God there is no East or West, no North or South. All creation is one. God is One.

Where do we stand now? We are all one. All Masters, all the holy scriptures say that we are the children of God. Prophet Mohammed says that we are members of the same family of God. The Sikh Masters also say that we are all brothers and God is our Father. The Christian scriptures and all others say the same thing.

Mankind is one, and God is One. We are worshippers of the same God. When we are worshippers of the same God the archers may be many, but the target is the same then, naturally we should have love for one another. You will find that two drunkards will embrace each other irrespective of whether they are of the east or the west, or belong to one religion or the other. But do you find that among those who profess to be lovers of God – between followers of one religion and those of another? They are lovers so far as their own faith is concerned. If they are lovers of God, they all should sit together and love one another.

The heads of the various religions are supposed to have contact with God. Whether they reach Him or not, that is another question altogether. But they are supposed by their followers to have seen God and to be one with God. They also profess that they are Godmen themselves. If so, why should they not love and embrace each other? There is one God overhead. It is all one humanity. We all are the same soul – conscious entity.

Man made social religions for the uplift of man. We have to make the best use of them. The best we call have out of the social religions is to know ourselves and to know God. Of course, we have to lead an ethical life. An ethical life is a stepping-stone to spirituality. These are the teachings of all Masters who came in the past.

As lovers of God, we should love all humanity. Having been born in any religion, it is a blessing to remain in it. Nevertheless we should rise above so that we become lovers of God, and then all mankind will have one religion.

Guru Nanak was once asked: “What is the highest form of religion in your opinion?” He replied: “Well, look here. I take all humanity, all men, as reading in the same class, seeking God. We are all classmates and I consider men the world over as classmates for the same ultimate goal.” We should love one another.

The tenth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh, was asked: “What do you think about man?” He replied: “All mankind is one – I tell you the whole truth – whether he is wearing a hat or a turban or is a recluse in a yellow or a black gown.” That makes no difference. These are the outer forms.

Excuse me if I ask you: What is the religion of God? He is all-consciousness. He made all men equal. Did He stamp anybody that he was such and such? No. When you know yourself, you will analyze yourself from the body and discover who you are. When you rise above body consciousness then you will find out. Religions pertain only to the outer forms of our life. We have to make the best use of them.

I have love for all social religions. That is all right. But the point is these social religions should go to help us on the way, to love God and to love all humanity. This is our ultimate goal. And further, to know ourselves and to know God, and have a first-hand experience of that Reality. Although that Reality cannot be expressed in words, still it can be experienced.

True religion is the first-hand experience of oneself, with his own Self and with God. That is the only true religion you have before you. There is the outer religion, and here is the inner religion. When you think everyone is all equal, then you will have love for all.

Our ultimate goal is to have love of God. Those persons or human beings whose souls came in contact with God, became the mouthpiece of God. They spoke as inspired by God. They are called Masters, or Godmen. We love them also for the sake of our love for God.

What did Christ say? He said:

No man knoweth the Son, but the Father;
Neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son,
And he to whomsoever the Son will reveal Him.

That is why your love goes to them especially. They have had a first-hand experience and they are competent to give us a first-hand experience of that Reality within. They tell us how to rise above body consciousness, to know ourselves and to know God.

Then we see with our eyes, no testimony is required. That is why we love all Masters who came in the past – whether they came here or anywhere else. You have to love God “with all thy heart, with all thy soul, with all thy mind.” Those who have loved God that way have merged their will in the Divine Will; they become the mouthpiece or conscious co-workers of the Divine Plan. Therefore, we love all Masters who came in the past.

Further, we revere all scriptures. What are these scriptures after all and what is their value to us? They are the recorded experiences of the past Masters, the experiences that they had in knowing themselves and those they had of God within themselves. They also revealed to us the things that helped them on the way and things that retarded their progress. In short, they gave us an account of their journey Godward. A description of all that formed the subject of all the holy scriptures. All saints deal with their pilgrimage to God. They tell us of the Godway, the halting stations, the various regions they passed through and what they found there; their pilgrimage on the way and their first-hand experiences at each place. They have thus left for us a fine record for our guidance.

All holy books from ages past are but footprints on the sands of time for the love-borne seekers after God. Those who are lovers of God naturally have love for all the scriptures. Kabir, the great Saint of the East, tells us: Say not that the scriptures are false, for he who does not see Truth in them is in the wrong. It is a pity that though we can read the scriptures, we cannot follow their true import until we see for ourselves what those Masters experienced within themselves, or until these are explained to us by one who has had that first-hand experience with himself and with God as those Masters had. Only then will we be following the true import of the holy scriptures. Otherwise, reading of the scriptures from morn till night, without following what the scriptures say, will lead us nowhere.

That does not mean that you should not read the holy scriptures. Read them by all means, but try to understand them rightly. When you have understood them, try to have those experiences in your own self. Only then will you be fully convinced of what they say. They may be likened to records of different persons visiting the same place – say Washington or Philadelphia – and describing it, each in his own language and in his own peculiar way.

We can read all these holy scriptures, but we cannot follow their true import until we seek the help of someone who has seen and had the experience these describe.

I would say that today in the twentieth century, we are rather fortunate. Why? We have all the fine records of the experiences of the Masters who came in the past. Had we come five hundred years ago, the holy scriptures of the Sikhs would not have been with us. Had we come, say 1500 years earlier, the holy Koran would not have been with us. And if we had come before 2000 years, the Bible would not have been with us. If we had come before the time of Zoroaster or the Buddha, or any one else, their scriptures would not have been with us. What I mean is that today we are fortunate in having with us these valuable records of the Masters who came in the past. They tell us what they experienced with themselves and God. The only thing needed now is to have someone who has had that experience which is given in those holy scriptures. He will be able to tell us the true import of things, and also he will be able to give us a first-hand experience of these things.

So for the love of God we love all Godmen. For the love of God, we love all the holy scriptures. There are so many pages of the book of God that have been written to guide the erring humanity. Many more may be written whenever any Master comes.

Further, we love all holy places of worship. Why? Because there people gather together to sing the praises of the one and the same God – in their own ways, of course. If we love somebody and someone happens to be praising him, we stand and hear how he describes him. So we have love for all holy places of worship for the love of God. Also, we love all places of pilgrimage, for they are the spots where once lived some Master, some Godman, who was one with God, who became the mouthpiece of God. It is for that alone that we have respect for all holy places where such Masters lived.

We love God first; God resides in every heart; therefore we love all humanity. For the same reasons, we love all Godmen, for they have known God. We love all holy scriptures, because they speak of Him and are valuable records of the experiences of the past Masters. Again, for the same reason we love all holy places of worship, whether temples or mosques, churches or synagogues. They are meant for chanting the praises of the Lord.

You remember, when Christ came, he entered the Temple in Jerusalem and turned out those who misused or defiled it. He told them: “You have made the house of my Father a business house.” Such a man, who is a lover of God, what will he say’? He will say what the Vedas say. The Yajur Veda says: Well, O people, let us all sit together and sing the praises of the Lord and worship the same God. But there are false ways of preaching that separate man from man. There is no common place where we can all sit together and worship the same God.

Again the Rig Veda says: Gather ye in thousands, and worship God and chant His praises. We are all lovers of the same Reality. We are all for the same Truth. There are thousands of lovers, but the Beloved is only one. We may call Him God, or by any name we like. We are lovers of the same Reality. Outwardly speaking, we have different social religions. Blessed you are. Remain where you are. To live in some social religion is a blessing. That is a helping factor. As with a midwife who helps at the birth of a child, so with social religions which help us in that way towards spirituality, in knowing ourselves and in knowing God.

Whenever Masters came, they never touched the outer forms, but simply said: Remain where you are. By changing your outer forms, rituals, this and that, you will not be able to have a first-hand experience of God. Those are only helping factors on the way, paving the road to spirituality. Make the best use of them.

Real religion starts where world philosophies end. All these outer forms of the social religions are limited only to the man’s material existence. The Kingdom of God, if you know yourself and know God, will open of itself when you rise above body consciousness. There the alphabet of the teachings of the Masters begins. The true religion starts from there. That is transcendental. That is above the organs of sense. When you come above, you will rise above the senses. It requires practical self-analysis, to know yourself and to know God.

This is the goal before us. The subjective side of all religions is the same. In the objective side, you will find some slight differences in non-essentials, but you will find their purpose is the same.

The question remains the same for all humanity – to know our Self and to know God. We have said so much about the outer things, the outer holy places of worship. God made man after His own image, and man made all these holy places of worship after the image of man. Churches are either nose-shaped or dome-shaped. And so are temples of other religions. In mosques, we find places of worship in the form of semi-circular arches whose shape resembles the human forehead.

The true temple of God is the man’s body and that you have. We just have to tap inside. When you transcend the body, there the ABC of true religion starts. That is the one destiny for all humanity. It has never been different.

The Masters, whenever they came, taught two things: ethical life of clean and chaste living with love for all men and all creation. Be chaste; don’t think evil of others even in thought, word or deed. Be truthful and love all humanity – hatred for none and selfless service for all. This is the first part which they take up for all mankind, irrespective of whether they belong to one religion or another.

No religion commends hatred for anybody. The question was put to Christ: “How should we behave with others?” He inquired: “What did Moses say to you?” He was told: “A tooth for a tooth and a nail for a nail.” He said: “That was only because of your hard-heartedness.” They asked: “What do you say, Rabbi?” Christ answered: “Moses also said, love thy neighbor as thyself.” They further asked him: “What about those who are our enemies?” And what did he say?He said: “Love thine enemies.”

Now, we all are embodied souls. The lover of God has love for all souls. The soul is a conscious entity of the same essence as of God. In fact, we form a true brotherhood. We are one with God, one ill God, and those who are lovers of God, naturally will have love for all humanity. Outward things will not matter. When you know yourself and know God, you come in contact with God, and then you will find Him immanent in every form and naturally you will have love for all. That is the permanent rock, I would say, on which humanity should stand, never to fall. The outer self sometimes gives way and we fall into the error that we preach against. There have been two great wars so far. Fought by whom? By those who were in name the followers of the same Savior and followed the same religion. Then, it comes to this, that they were not living up to what the scriptures of the Masters say. They simply say: “I profess this religion or that.”

If we but live up to what the scriptures say, irrespective of country or religion, we will get ready to see God. After all, man is man. All religions are comprised of men, and men are the same everywhere. This is just like being students in any school or college. Why do you study? For the sake of gaining knowledge. You may join this college or that, that makes no difference. When you get your degree, you are seldom asked from which college you got your degree. They call you a graduate.

Similarly, all the social religions were made to turn out perfect men believing in the oneness of God. The word university simply means having one purpose in view. And the purpose to have in view is to understand man: who he is, what he is, and what is his relation to God. But this goal has been lost sight of. The means have become the end, and outer knowledge, instead of leading us to inner knowledge, is being studied for its own sake.

The preaching done by paid men in all religions has made matters worse. Otherwise, the men of realization say: “The true temple, if any, is man’s body itself.” All the scriptures bear this out. All is holy where devotion kneels. Wherever you have devotion, sit down in sweet remembrance of the Lord and say your prayers.

My Master used to emphasize the need for a common ground where seekers of Truth, irrespective of their faiths, could gather together. There should be no social forms or rituals, there should be no temples or anything of the sort. Let them remain in their own social religions. The purpose of a man’s life and the ultimate goal of the social religions is to know oneself and to know God. How to analyze yourself from the body, open your inner eye and enter the Kingdom of God. Those subjects should be dealt with there.

In India, we have an Ashram in Delhi, and we have no temple there. People come to me and ask: “Well, what particular temple have you raised?” I always tell them: “Man’s body is the true temple of God. I have love for all temples of the social religions, but here I have none.” And for the other temple, the whole world is the temple of God, the earth below and the sky overhead. We have a grassy ground over there where we can accommodate 25 to 30 thousand people. Of course, we have a long shed to give us protection from rain or sun, if necessary. We have all the scriptures over there, for the reason that they speak of the same valuable experiences which the Masters had in their lives.

Men come there. They are seeking after Truth. To follow certain outward observances is not the be-all or the end-all. They are only the means to an end. Make the best use of them.

But until you rise above body consciousness and know yourself and know God, there is no liberation, no return to the True Home of the Father.

These are the elementary steps we take. That is all right. But take a step further from where you are. Rise above the body consciousness, open the inner eye and see the Light of God within and enter the Kingdom of God, reach your True Home, the home of your Father. This is the ultimate goal of all religions.

But there are wrong ways of preaching, I would tell you. Instead of uniting man to man, they are separating man from man; since the ministers themselves have no first-hand experience of that Reality, they must tell their people that man is man and God is God.

All men are equal for God, and the same God is worshipped by us all. Naturally we have love for one another. But we find that social religion is like a golden watch, studded with gems and jewels, which does not give us any time whatsoever. We have our social religions. Each social religion has the work before it to turn out perfect men: Be ye perfect even as thy Father which is in heaven is perfect. But instead of turning out perfect men, they are simply strengthening their own folds. Naturally, when you say this fold is higher than the other, there is a clash between class and class, and we sec no true progress.

My point is, we have one God, the same God. Each religion does not have its own God. The same God is worshipped by all of us. Let us embrace each other and sit in amity, love and accord, to sing praise of the Lord as one family. Since we are lovers of God, we have to love all Godmen, Masters who came in the past or who may come in the future. Our respect goes out to all of them. We have love for all the scriptures, because they speak of the same God and record the experiences that the Masters had with themselves and with God. And we have love for all holy places of worship, because they are meant for singing praises of the Lord.

So all mankind is one, and we are worshippers of the same God. We have different forms, outer forms, we belong to different religions outwardly, but our Beloved is the same. If we only keep that in view before us, we will be at peace, we will have peace on earth and goodwill among men. There will be no danger of war or anything of that sort.

Today’s subject was “God and Man.” I have put it before you briefly. Next we will see that ultimately we have to know God. But until we know ourselves, how can we know God?

It is the soul that has to have experience of God, because God is All Consciousness, and our souls are also conscious entities. It is the soul that has to experience God, and for that purpose we will have to know the inner man, who we are, what we are. “Know thyself” has been the motto set forth by all sages. They never said “Know others.” First if you know yourself, only then will you be able to know the Overself.

That will be the next subject and along with it we will compare the higher values of life – physical, intellectual and spiritual. Next, we will take up the Kingdom of God: where it is, how we can reach that Kingdom, and how to open the inner eye to see. The sages say that God is Light. How can we see God, see the Light of God? That will be the subject of our third talk. After that, we will determine which is the most natural way for having that experience: what other Godmen said, how the scriptures speak of the Godmen, that will be the subject of our last talk.

The Masters, as the true worshippers of life, adore only what is the highest life-principle at the back of all creation – visible and invisible. The Masters do not demand of us to leave our religions which, after all, are the various schools of thought and serve as a training ground for striving after the higher and true aspect of religion, but establish reunion of the soul with the oversoul. Verily, where the world philosophies end, there the religion in its vital aspect starts. We may not get startled at this statement. The various religious orders are like the badges which students wear as distinctive hallmarks indicative of the various institutions or the university to which they belong. Take, for instance, the case of India with a plenitude of perennial river-systems. Here it is considered necessary that one must engage in meditation after a complete bath. Again, take Arabia, a desert-land with an acute dearth of water. There the people worship with just a “wazu” – a simple washing of hands, feet, and face. And in places where no water is available, the people are content with “taummum”– cleaning the hands with desert sand. If you were to think deeply, the basic reason for all these forms of purification is that one should do meditation with an alert mind with no signs of laziness or slothfulness.

Similarly, take the case of congregational prayers in religious places. In temples, mosques, and gurdwaras, it is considered virtuous for devotees to enter the precincts with their heads covered and feet bare, while Christians generally go to their churches with heads bare and shoes on. This is all due to the climatic differences in the East and the West, the object in each case being to observe proper decorum and maintain reverence and sanctity of the house of God. The Masters, therefore, find no fault with the religious orders as such with their traditional social background. But they offer us a higher way up – a way into the Beyond – which is purely a practical subject, wholly uncovered by the so-called religious and social make-up designed solely with the purpose of preliminary training as may help in self-realization and God-realization.

There are two types of knowledge – one is exoteric (aparavidya), and the other is esoteric (paravidya). While the former consists in the studying of scriptures, going on pilgrimages, observing fasts and vigils, and performing austerities and the like, all of which, of course, are done on the plane of senses, the latter is a practical way up into spiritual regions. The Masters, on the other hand, always lay stress on rising above body-consciousness, undertaking the spiritual journey into the regions beyond the senses. One may continue to observe and perform religious practices throughout one’s lifetime. These would enable one to get into religiosity, but not into religion in its true aspect that comes by awakening the inner impulse for divine grace bubbling over with life.

A close study of man reveals that he is just a bundle of habits and leads a life of routine make-belief. He has no time to ponder seriously over the problem of problems of his existence and of the soul-entity in him. All his life he runs after shadowy things of no consequence and seeks to find happiness in material things. Just as a musk-deer, not knowing that the perfume is emanating from within him, he runs wild in the ever shadowy mirage until he is completely exhausted. Whatever pleasures man derives are purely sense pleasures and not happiness that comes from serenity within. Even the so-called pleasures are the result of our own concentrated rays of attention falling upon the sense-objects which per se are just like a lean bone with no meat on it.

We are living in a world of constantly changing panorama. Whatever we see, we get attached to it and lend it a momentary charm. We feel the pinch of detachment and disappointment the moment either the scene changes or we are forced to quit the pleasures that we must, sooner or later. The Masters, therefore, lay stress on something of unique and permanent interest in the midst of change. They do not ask of us to leave the world and degenerate into a helpless recluse, but offer us a simple yet practical way to attain the real and eternal happiness right here and now. Mind as we know, like parasitic creatures, has no roots of its own. It derives its sustenance from the soul, and yet keeps its tentacles firmly fixed on our attention, the outward expression of the soul currents within. It is only in the serene moments of complete relaxation that one experiences the harmony of the higher order and unrivalled character when the mind turns back upon itself instead of staying out.

So, I was discussing the spiritual aspect of human life – the most important and mostly ignored. We assemble here from time to time for discussing the science of soul. Usually some composition of a Master-saint is taken as the basis for understanding the higher truths of life, which they have left behind for our guidance. Today we take up a hymn from Guru Nanak, the first Sikh Guru.

The rich waters of life, to partake which you have come into the world, is Amrit; and this may be taken from the living Master.

Satsang

‘Come like all-flooding rain, come in me and stop

the thought of separation with one drop of this shower!

Without You, the Lord of this creation, I am dry in this world.

When Your clouds come and shower with rain, everything gets green.

With His grace make this shower come so that he who is touched by it

will become fresh and green through it.’

Whenever Satsang is held, there one can get this water.

 

Satsang – a spiritual school

It is a school where you are not only taught but are given a demonstration of the God within you. If you want to become educated in a particular subject, you have to go to a school or college where that subject is taught. If you want to learn about your physical body, how it is retarded and how it can be renewed, you have to go to a school where the subject of how to have sound health is taught. If you want to engineering, you will have to go to a school where there is some engineer to teach you. So Satsang is a school where “how to meet God” is taught. Satsang is a school where somebody sis sitting who knows God, who sees God and who is competent to give others some demonstration of the God within them, some capital to start with. The word “Satsang” means actually uniting the soul with the all pervading, all existing God.

“Sat” means “eternal” – which never falls away in dissolution or grand dissolution. That is God himself. God does not die. And “Sang” means “to come in contact with it”. Who has to come in contact with that God-into-expression-power (Naam)? That is our soul.

 

Two kinds of Satsang

The first Satsang you get inside – first class. Another Satsang is coming in contact with suchlike people who have got first-hand contact with God. What do you want? That’s the point. Do you want God? Or do you want worldly things? This is to be decided. If you have got true desire, yearning, to know God, then God will make arrangement to bring you in contact somewhere where He is manifest, where He is the mouthpiece of God, and He will enable you to contact God who is within your own self already.

 

The purpose of coming to Satsang

So your purpose of coming to Satsang is to imbibe the love of God, to sit in His sweet remembrance, to unite with Him. All things, past and future, all irrelevant matters can be dealt within your own place of residence. Come, but come with the very best of intentions. Bring the remembrance of the Lord with you, and take it with you when you leave.

Christ also said, “where more than two sit in my name – there I am.” Master says that it is beyond praise when people sit in His sweet remembrance. You cannot praise enough a place, where people sit in His name, where they decide about their future, where people decide about their work: to live for others, to forget their old problems and surrender them to the Masterpower. You are given back a heritage here, that had been lost. You regain it. By coming to the Satsang you get everything, provided you detach consciously from the world. You get a boost, a conscious boost in life, that will help you to develop in the worldly way as well as in the spiritual way.

Spirit or soul

What is soul?

The soul is a ray of His (God’s) thought. Soul is a ray of His wish. The soul felt its identity when it was separated from the ocean – the ocean of consciousness, and for that it had to assume different forms. It bears the physical, astral and causal body and is living in the material world, in the material nature.

Who knows, “I am the soul”?

This awakening and right understanding came out of its own self, from the soul, and it could know that it has to go somewhere, but it is tied in the body with mind and matter and cannot get out of it. However, the link is there. No one can separate the link from the origin.

The thought of that power awakens the soul.

You know, as the clouds burst in the skies and it rains on the earth, so does it happen with the soul. When the thought of that power, which is within vibrates, it awakens the soul in the body. The soul is not satisfied in this human body. The greatest help we can give is the help to the soul. It is the greatest selfless service, the service to our own self.

The Masterpower reminds us, “You are the spirit, you are the soul.” Man is the first creation of His thought. Everything else came afterwards.

The ocean lives in the fish

It is our ignorance that we think the fish lives in the ocean. That power is innate in the soul and due to Him we know that we are of the same essence as that of God. So the ocean lives in the fish and not the fish in the ocean. If we know that, we are nearer to the goal.

With due deference to the scientific progress, man has ignored the most vital part of his life – the active life-principle in him, the soul, the very essence of life, or spark from the all-consciousness, an unseen and invisible power at the back of all creation. The Masters of the mystic science have been deeply engaged with the development of this mysterious power called life, and the results of their experiments are recorded in the form of various scriptures of the world. This sacred literature, in spite of the apparent diversities, reveals a marvelous uniformity at the core – a basic unity testifying oneness of the source – the immutable radiance of the divinity.

The Master-souls have come time and time again to grace this earth for the humanity’s spiritual enlightenment. They have left behind for our guidance the precious records of what they experienced within.

Ever since the first flicker of life on earth, man has been mightily engaged in search of happiness. He has made a tremendous progress in all walks of life. Take, for example, physical research. Many wonderful sciences have come to light: Unani system of medicine, Ayurvedic system of cure, Allopathy, Homeopathy, Naturopathy, and the like. All of them aim at the smooth working of the physical body. Surgery has progressed to an extent unknown before – the finest organ of the human body can now be replaced or transplanted from one to another. Similarly, man has taken long strides in the field of intellect. Man has not only conquered the forces of nature, but has pressed them into his service. You can hear and see a person from thousands of miles afar with the aid of a wireless set and a television. Man is now trying to probe into the mysteries of space and establish interplanetary relations. All these are the miracles of the scientific mind.

So many faiths and isms fail to offer us a perfect solution of the problem of life. The maximum that priest craft can offer is a certain belief in the goodness to come in the distant future. Thus, most of the people devoted to the so-called spiritual enlightenment remain in their water-tight compartments, make-belief of religious affiliations, following a code of set principles with the hope that all this will ultimately lead to liberation.

All the established religious orders have their origin in some Master in the past, who in his own good time guided the people to a higher purpose of life – the spiritual perfection. Every flow is followed by an ebb in the affairs of man. To err is human and people generally relax into ignorance with the passage of time. The merciful providence, however, in the fullness of time, provides the world with the means of regeneration. Another prophet, a new messiah, comes on the scene to fan into flames the dying embers and tries to knit all his children into silken bonds of world fellowship.

When you know yourself and know God, you come in contact with God, and then you will find Him immanent in every form and naturally you will have love for all. That is the permanent rock, I would say, on which humanity should stand, never to fall. The outer self sometimes gives way and we fall into the error that we preach against. There have been two great wars so far. Fought by whom? By those who were in name the followers of the same Savior and followed the same religion. Then, it comes to this, that they were not living up to what the scriptures of the Masters say. They simply say: “I profess this religion or that.”

If we but live up to what the scriptures say, irrespective of country or religion, we will get ready to see God. After all, man is man. All religions are comprised of men, and men are the same everywhere. This is just like being students in any school or college. Why do you study? For the sake of gaining knowledge. You may join this college or that, that makes no difference. When you get your degree, you are seldom asked from which college you got your degree. They call you a graduate.

Similarly, all the social religions were made to turn out perfect men believing in the oneness of God. The word university simply means having one purpose in view. And the purpose to have in view is to understand man: who he is, what he is, and what is his relation to God. But this goal has been lost sight of. The means have become the end, and outer knowledge, instead of leading us to inner knowledge, is being studied for its own sake.

The preaching done by paid men in all religions has made matters worse. Otherwise, the men of realization say: “The true temple, if any, is man’s body itself.” All the scriptures bear this out. All is holy where devotion kneels. Wherever you have devotion, sit down in sweet remembrance of the Lord and say your prayers.

My Master used to emphasize the need for a common ground where seekers of Truth, irrespective of their faiths, could gather together. There should be no social forms or rituals, there should be no temples or anything of the sort. Let them remain in their own social religions. The purpose of a man’s life and the ultimate goal of the social religions is to know oneself and to know God. How to analyze yourself from the body, open your inner eye and enter the Kingdom of God. Those subjects should be dealt with there.

In India, we have an Ashram in Delhi, and we have no temple there. People come to me and ask: “Well, what particular temple have you raised?” I always tell them: “Man’s body is the true temple of God. I have love for all temples of the social religions, but here I have none.” And for the other temple, the whole world is the temple of God, the earth below and the sky overhead. We have a grassy ground over there where we can accommodate 25 to 30 thousand people. Of course, we have a long shed to give us protection from rain or sun, if necessary. We have all the scriptures over there, for the reason that they speak of the same valuable experiences which the Masters had in their lives.

Men come there. They are seeking after Truth. To follow certain outward observances is not the be-all or the end-all. They are only the means to an end. Make the best use of them.

But until you rise above body consciousness and know yourself and know God, there is no liberation, no return to the True Home of the Father.

These are the elementary steps we take. That is all right. But take a step further from where you are. Rise above the body consciousness, open the inner eye and see the Light of God within and enter the Kingdom of God, reach your True Home, the home of your Father. This is the ultimate goal of all religions.

But there are wrong ways of preaching, I would tell you. Instead of uniting man to man, they are separating man from man; since the ministers themselves have no first-hand experience of that Reality, they must tell their people that man is man and God is God.

All men are equal for God, and the same God is worshipped by us all. Naturally we have love for one another. But we find that social religion is like a golden watch, studded with gems and jewels, which does not give us any time whatsoever. We have our social religions. Each social religion has the work before it to turn out perfect men: Be ye perfect even as thy Father which is in heaven is perfect. But instead of turning out perfect men, they are simply strengthening their own folds. Naturally, when you say this fold is higher than the other, there is a clash between class and class, and we sec no true progress.

My point is, we have one God, the same God. Each religion does not have its own God. The same God is worshipped by all of us. Let us embrace each other and sit in amity, love and accord, to sing praise of the Lord as one family. Since we are lovers of God, we have to love all Godmen, Masters who came in the past or who may come in the future. Our respect goes out to all of them. We have love for all the scriptures, because they speak of the same God and record the experiences that the Masters had with themselves and with God. And we have love for all holy places of worship, because they are meant for singing praises of the Lord.

So all mankind is one, and we are worshippers of the same God. We have different forms, outer forms, we belong to different religions outwardly, but our Beloved is the same. If we only keep that in view before us, we will be at peace, we will have peace on earth and goodwill among men. There will be no danger of war or anything of that sort.

Today’s subject was “God and Man.” I have put it before you briefly. Next we will see that ultimately we have to know God. But until we know ourselves, how can we know God?

It is the soul that has to have experience of God, because God is All Consciousness, and our souls are also conscious entities. It is the soul that has to experience God, and for that purpose we will have to know the inner man, who we are, what we are. “Know thyself” has been the motto set forth by all sages. They never said “Know others.” First if you know yourself, only then will you be able to know the Overself.

That will be the next subject and along with it we will compare the higher values of life – physical, intellectual and spiritual. Next, we will take up the Kingdom of God: where it is, how we can reach that Kingdom, and how to open the inner eye to see. The sages say that God is Light. How can we see God, see the Light of God? That will be the subject of our third talk. After that, we will determine which is the most natural way for having that experience: what other Godmen said, how the scriptures speak of the Godmen, that will be the subject of our last talk.

The purpose of human life

Man is in search of happiness, but has no peace of mind. Even if he succeeds in achieving his objectives, he remains dissatisfied. His search for peace and happiness, therefore, never ends. Saint Augustine says that God gave us the senses for using them properly, but we misuse them by indulging in sensual pleasures; whereas the bliss for which we should have striven remains enshrined in scriptures only.

Man is an ensouled entity gifted with body, mind, and intellect. He takes good care of his body for the sake of his domestic, social, and political well-being. Intellectually, he has made strident advances. He has successfully explored the earth, oceans, and space and has made atomic bombs. A single atom bomb can destroy millions. Strangely enough, with all his achievements he remains ignorant about the prime source of energy from which his body and mind derive their strength – soul – his true self. He has so much identified himself with the body that he is unable to distinguish his soul from the body.

Soul is a conscious entity. Just as any essence has its basic source, soul too has an ultimate source – the Oversoul – a vast ocean of All-Consciousness. The entire universe is His manifestation. The soul is identified with the material body by constant association with the senses. Man does not know that he can have true happiness only when he is able to disfranchise the self in him from the outer vestures. He is so much entangled with the mind and body that he ever remains unhappy and restless. Soul being conscious and body being material, these cannot coexist amiably.
We pretend to be religious by reading the scriptures without knowing their true import and by offering ceremonial prayers at the places of worship. All that we worship is physical health and worldly riches. We aspire for material well-being and not for God-realization. It is said that once Majnu, a legendary lover, was told that God wished to see him. Majnu replied if that was so, God must come in the form of Lila, his beloved. Most of us offer our prayers to God only because we want to fulfil our worldly ambitions. We seek God‘s blessings to become physical and intellectual giants. Thus, to us God is only a means to worldly ends. Consequently, we get only that we crave for; i.e., the material world and not God.

To know God we must first know ourselves. From time immemorial many have tried to define God philosophically. But He remains undefined as ever. God cannot be realized by the body or intellect or senses. He can only be experienced by the soul. Unless we know ourselves, the question of knowing God does not arise. Thus, the first step in this direction is self-knowledge which precedes God-knowledge. „Know thyself “ has been the call of Saints and sages. Guru Nanak was once asked by a Muslim holy man to define His faith. The Guru replied that He neither claimed to be a Hindu nor a Muslim in the ordinary sense. He explained that His body was Composed of five elements – ether, earth, fire, water, and air – and the God Power was pulsating in Him.
Hazur (Baba Sawan Singh Ji)was once asked as to which religion He belonged. He replied: ‚If God is Hindu, I am a Hindu; if He is Sikh, I am a Sikh; if He is Muslim, I am a Muslim; if He is a Christian, then I am a Christian.“
All religions are man-made. God has not put a stamp of religion on anyone. To know the Controlling Power of the universe, it is inevitable and essential to „know thyself,“ as Christ has put it. Guru Nanak has also said: „Until and unless one analyses one‘s self, it is not possible to shed delusion and realize the Reality.“ Unless your Third Eye is opened, you cannot realize God.

How various Saints have solved the mystery of life is the subject for today. The fact is that Truth is one, but the ways of expression may be different. Our ideal is Truth. Let us see what Swami Ji has to say on the subject: „Link your soul with Naam.“ We are advised to connect our soul with the Word. It implies that our attention is presently linked with something other than the Word. What is meant by attention? It is consciousness, a state of awakening or awareness. We may call it attention, spirit, or soul. It is this life current emanating from our self (soul) which acts as a driving force within us. Swami Ji asks us to link this current with the Word. Now, where is the source of these currents? It is at the seat of the soul between the two eyebrows. What happens at the time of death? Life withdraws from the feet and rises to the back of the eyes. The power which is concentrated behind the eyes is our real self. After that power is withdrawn, the body is of no significance. This is the most important and mostly ignored subject. In order to probe further into this subject, one has to realize that soul is an entity distinct from the body. We have to learn and practice to withdraw the soul currents from lower centres of the body to the eye focus. This process is similar to the one undergone by the soul at the time of one‘s physical death. We have to rise above body-consciousness. The theoretical knowledge of this process is not enough. Practice is far more important. An ounce of practice is more than tons of theory.
So we have to link our soul with the Word. Let us now consider what the Word (Naam) signifies. The Word has two aspects. One is an epithet and the other is that ultimate Power to which the epithet refers. For example, water itself is one thing, but it is referred to by many names; e.g., water, aqua, H20, etc. Similarly, Truth is one; but sages have described it in various ways. Guru Nanak says: „I want to sacrifice myself on all Thy Names, 0 Lord.“ Guru Gobind Singh (the tenth Sikh Guru) compiled hundreds of Names of God in His work „Jaap Sahib.“ These Names are in addition to those already mentioned in the various scriptures. Despite hundreds of Names, God is one. Similarly, there are many religions; but their goal is one.
We have to understand the God Power with the help of spoken Names. This is our first step. Though the name is not different from the Named, yet it seems so until the Named is actually contacted. A person tastes a mango and declares that it is sweet. But one who has neither seen a mango nor tasted sugar, cannot know how sweet it is. Thus, to realize God is of utmost importance. We have to make a beginning with spoken Names. It is unfortunate that people quarrel over the different Names of God as given by the founders of the various religions. All the Names refer to the supreme Lord; and, as such, They all deserve our respect. The real thing is the Power-of-God to which these Names refer. That Power is eternal Truth. It is One, will ever remain One, and is called Naam or the Word.
The Word is the source of the entire creation and can be experienced only with the help of a Satguru (true Master). Guru Nanak has explained this point lucidly in the Jap Ji: „Whatever has come into being is the creation of the Word.“ The Word is the Power that exists in the minutest speck in the universe. That is the Divine Link that connects the body with the soul. When this Link breaks, it brings about physical death. It is the same Link which sustains the universe and higher spiritual planes. When this Divine Link is withdrawn, there is total dissolution.

Now, the question arises, if we are connected with the Divine Link, which is the point in the body at which the two meet? Guru Nanak tells us that the Word can be contacted after one transcends the six chakras (ganglionic centres) and has reached the Agyay chakra (behind and between the two eyebrows). The Divine link can be established only there and not anywhere else in the body. Rishi Patanjali as also other past Saints have explained this process. When one reaches the Agyay chakra after rising above the six lower chakras, one is connected with the celestial Sound Current, the Anhat sound, and merges into Sahasrar, the first spiritual plane. The Anhat sound is the Divine Link; it is the Word, or the Divine Power, which is manifested in every human being. This is the primary source of all existence. Naam (the Word), says Gurbani, is invisible, unfathomable, limitless, and sweet beyond description. It has an everlasting divine intoxication and bliss. Whosoever experiences it forgets all worldly pleasures. The soul is a drop of the Ocean of All-Consciousness, but is covered by numerous sheaths of body, mind, and senses. So long as a man is engrossed in the material world, he remains unaware of the Divine Naam within him.
What does the Naam signify? According to Gurbani, communion with Naam opens within a grand vista of Divine Light – the Light of God. Naam also refers to the Sound Principle – the Sound of unabounding joy. Thus, there are two expressions of Naam – the God Power – Light and Sound. In the Vedas, Naam has been described as Udgeet or Naad – music of the Beyond. According to the Vedas, Naad has created fourteen spheres.
Muslim sages call it the Kalma. They also believe that the Kalma has created fourteen tabaks (spheres). Maulana Rumi once prayed: „0 God, lead me to the place where conversation goes on without words.“ Christ says: „In the beginning was the Word, Word was with God and Word was God.“ The Gurbani says: „Naam has created the earth and the heaven. All light has emanated from Naam. All creation has come into being from Naam which is resounding in all human beings.“
The Word was there even before the universe came into being. The Word is thus the source of all creation.

Saints of all the religions have expressed parallel thoughts on the subject: “The Word has been the source of salvation to human beings during all the four Yugas.” Gurubani God is Wordless, Nameless, and beyond description. When He came into being, it was called Naam, the Word. the Light-Sound Principle. One who communes with Naam is able to establish a contact with God. Hafiz Sahib, a great Persian mystic poet, says: „No one knows the abode of the Beloved, but it is certain that sound of bells comes from there.“ If you follow the strain of sound, you will reach its source. Thus, the Word – Light and Sound – is the safest means to the end – the way back to God. To get in contact with the Divine Light, one has to rise above body-consciousness by self-analysis. Only then a contact with the Divine Sound is possible. By contacting Naam one gets peace and eternal bliss. „Blessed are they who are linked with the Word, 0 Nanak! Whosoever listens to the eternal music attains salvation.“ Gurbani
People generally get lost in various Names of God. The whole world talks of Naam, but there are only a few who know the real significance of Naam. It is a practical subject. Unless we realize ourselves by rising above body-consciousness, soul cannot establish a contact with the Oversoul. We have, therefore, to link our soul with Naam: „Those who have communed with the Word, their toils shall end; Not only shall they have salvation, O Nanak, but many more shall find freedom with them.“ The Jap Ji
Again we have in Gurbani: „A Gurumukh (beloved of the Master) can liberate millions of souls by imparting just a particle of His life impulse.“ Gurbani
Emerson says: „The keynote to success is one‘s own thoughts.“ To make a mark in any walk of life, you have to concentrate your attention on that particular aspect. Similarly, if you concentrate your attention on Overself, you will become spiritually great. Bulleh Shah, a Muslim Saint, inquired from His spiritual guide as to how one could find God? The guide replied: „It is as easy as withdrawing the attention from here (world) and connecting it there (the Word). Our ‚very self ‘ is our attention. We are soul and not the body, but we are engrossed in our bodies. Swami Ji tells us: „Let any one of us connect his attention with the Word. This body and wealth will not be of any help when confronted with the negative power.“

The human body is the soul‘s first companion. It comes first with the soul when the child is born. But even this companion leaves us at the time of death, not to mention other worldly associations acquired by us. Our own being, having constant attachment with the physical world, has fallen to the latter‘s level. As a result, we have to come to this mortal world again and again. Gurbani says: „Soul goes where there is attachment.“
If we are able to analyse the self in our lifetime and learn to rise above body consciousness by getting a higher contact with Naam, we experience such a bliss as to forget all worldly pleasures and attachments: „Worldly pleasures are nowhere before the Divide Bliss.“ Gurbani
That is why Saints have taught : “O friend, give up the insipid sensual pleasures, and drink the sweet elixir of Naam.“ Gurbani

When one gets a taste of the real bliss, the pleasures become insipid. The real bliss is either within our inner being or in Naam – God-into-action Power – since soul is its essence. Soul is a spark of the Divine Essence. It is bliss in itself, and it is a conscious entity. It is the soul which is the source of all bliss and not the body and worldly things. Saints have warned us that worldly objects, in which our attention is engrossed, are not going to be of real help to us. Not only that all these worldly objects will stay back at the time of death, but their constant attachment will bring the soul back again and again to this world. „What does it profit a man to gain the possession of the whole world and to lose one‘s own soul.“ The soul resides in this house (body). it has to go out of this mortal frame leaving everything behind. When the time comes to vacate this body, one is greatly distressed because of man‘s attachment with the body. Repenting then is of no avail. If during one‘s lifetime the soul establishes a contact with the Beyond, it attains perfect peace. But, we never think of the world beyond. We generally follow the maxim: „Eat, drink, and be merry.“ If someone reminds us of death, we just ignore it by saying that we will face it when it comes. This is not a wise approach. If a pigeon closes its eyes at the sight of a cat, the cat is not going to spare it. Everyone has to leave the body. There is no exception to the rule.

„Emperors or kings, rich or poor, All have but to go in their turn.“ Gurbani

We all have to go, but we do not know when. We should be prepared for the change. Are we? „Everyone is scared of death and wishes to live till eternity; With Guru‘s Grace, if one learns to die while alive, one can become a conscious co-worker of the Lord. Whosoever so dies, gets salvation.“ Gurbani
If you learn to die by rising above body consciousness, you will attain life everlasting. All Saints tell us that God has bestowed us with three forms: physical, astral, and supra mental or causal. We are already active at the physical plane (Pind) through the senses. After leaving the physical body, the soul acquires the astral form. With the astral senses it can traverse the astral plane (And). Similarly, after attaining supra mental form the soul can enter into the causal plane (Brahmand). It is beyond these three planes that the soul gets self-knowledge. It is only at that stage that you will be able to know who you really are. Swami Ji says: „This is the most opportune time to attain peaceful bliss by avoiding the fire of ceaseless desires.“ The world is being consumed by invisible flames of fire. Guru Nanak has prayed: „This is the fire of desires that has spread all over.“ Although we are its victims, we are unable to perceive it. Only Saints know the real magnitude of this fire. Yet only human life is capable of getting away from this blazing furnace. That is why human life is considered to be the crown of creation. But without sincere effort in the right direction, there can be no salvation. For instance, if we have to avoid scorching heat, we have to find shelter in an air-conditioned room. In our context, the air-conditioned room is within us. We shall have to withdraw from outside and enter into it to find blissful solace from all the miseries of the world. This is high time that we introvert ourselves. If we miss this God-given opportunity, we are no better than beasts. The human body has a worth so long as the soul dwells in it. We should make the most of it while it lasts.

Man is enveloped by flames of passionate desires, anger, greed, attachment, and vanity. One can escape himself from delusion only by contacting the Word within. The most important task before us, therefore, is to withdraw our attention from outside and get attuned with the Divine Melody within. Then comes eternal peace in the form of the Word. Whosoever has accomplished this essential task is really successful in life. Otherwise, any amount of learning, name and fame have no real meaning. It is high time that we learn to rise above body-consciousness and know the real self in us.
„Contemplate the form of Satguru, and serve Him true, and He shall lead thee away from all harm.“ Swami Ji Swami Ji now tells us how to link the soul with the Naam Power. He says that three steps should be taken to rise above body-consciousness. First is Simran (contemplation) – continuous remembrance of the Almighty. Second, service to the Master. Third, control of all desires. We are always busy in contemplating worldly affairs. If we have to establish a contact with the Word of God, we must first constantly remember Him by any Name of our choice. This should be our first and foremost ideal by inculcating the habit of His contemplation every moment of our life. We have to replace worldly thoughts by contemplating the Word.
Contemplate on Him alone ceaselessly; so much so that you begin to feel the pangs of His separation. Thus, the first step is His remembrance. Remembrance leads to love which, in turn, results in pangs of separation. This creates a strong urge for the Beloved. „Only One to remember and to sigh for; sing ceaselessly His praise alone. Meditate on Him with all the love in thee.“ Gurbani

Simran should be undertaken with intense love for God. Love brings concentration. One forgets the whole world while contemplating one‘s beloved. Another purpose of Simran is to identify the soul with its real form. Yet another aim of Simran is to enable the self to know itself. As it is, the soul is completely identified with the physical body. It has to be withdrawn from the body and concentrated at its seat in the centre of the eyebrows. In the Gita, Lord Krishna says that Great Ones traverse into the cave starting from a place above the nose. There are various methods of doing Simran – with the help of a rosary, or with tongue, or in throat and heart. However, Saints do not advise these methods as these are apt to become mechanical and allow the mind to wander away. Thus, concentration of attention through those methods may not be possible. Saints have, therefore, advised the practice of Simran with the tongue of thought. All Saints, including Maulani Rumi, Guru Arjan, and Swami Ji, have indicated this Spiritual Path. Guru Arjan prayed: „O Saints, take pity on us; we have yet to learn to serve our souls. „

We are working on the mental and sensual planes. Until we learn to rise above body-consciousness, our plight remains unchanged. Yogis tried to control breathing through Kumbhak to achieve concentration of attention. It is a difficult process and everyone cannot practice it. Saints, therefore, do not interfere with the breathing function. They concentrate Their attention at the seat of the soul, behind and in the center of the two eyes, by means of Simran with the tongue of thought. If it is done with rapt attention, the soul will cease to flow out through the body pores. The body will then become senseless. It is only then after that the concentrated soul gets the contact of God.
However, Simran with the tongue of thought is not as easy as it appears to be. It can be accomplished successfully only through the blessings of a competent Master. Now, there is a difference between practicing Simran by repeating the Names given by a competent Master and the name or names taken out of scripture of one‘s religious belief. The Names given by a competent living Master at the time of initiation are charged with His thought transference and have tremendous force in them. This type of Simran, therefore, is above all other forms of Simran. The Vedas and other scriptures have stated that in order to seek God, one must seek the guidance of a true Master. Besides giving the charged Names, the Master also gives a practical contact with the Divine Power. Now, the question is how to get that competent guidance?
Swami Ji tells us to serve the Master; One can serve the Master in many ways – physically, financially, intellectually, and spiritually. One should lead a chaste and clean life. Keep the body ever engaged in selfless service. This is physical service. As for monetary service, spend a part of your income for charity. After fulfilling your family requirements, you must keep aside a part of your earnings in the name of God. This is a duty one must not neglect. Service by heart and mind means love for all, hated for none, and observance of Truth. The service of the soul is of the highest order. To do this one has to rise above body-consciousness and to open the inner eye. Hazur used to say that a Master may keep a servant or two to serve Him. He does not need our services in the normal sense. If we only obey His commandments, keep our lives chaste and pure, we not only serve the Master, but also our own „self.“ The Master loves them most who serve their own souls and lead a pious life. So, Swami ji exhorts us to imbibe the feeling of service and to refrain from sensual desires. All desires are included in sensuality. The observance of celibacy is most important. Just as light and darkness cannot stay together, the Word and sensual desires are not compatible. Therefore, we must observe celibacy. Married people need not despair. They ought to live a disciplined life in accordance with the scriptures where marital relations are permitted only for procreation. Grihastashram (family system) is a great institution. Most Saints or great souls (mahatmas) were householders and fulfilled their family obligations. Hazur has said that those who wish to bring up their children pure and chaste should themselves become so. Children tend to emulate their parents. Swami Ji thus asks us to take three steps if we want to rise above body consciousness and to get contact with Naam: to practice Simran, to serve Satguru, and to lead a chaste life. Swami Ji says that you can have a taste of the Divine Nectar with the help of a true Master only after you have brought your mind and sensual desires under control. At present the soul is flowing out through the senses. Discipline your senses and keep your mind steady. You will then know who you are. When you have realized yourself, only then the question of realizing the Overself will arise. Those who have disciplined their senses can free themselves from the influence of enemies like lust, anger, greed, attachment, and vanity. These five deadly enemies attack us through the five senses. You can escape their fatal attacks if you rise above body-consciousness.

The Upanishads state: „The soul is riding a chariot of the body driven by horses of the senses with the mind as its reins and the intellect as its driver in the field of sensual pleasures.“ Swami Ji, therefore, stresses the need to discipline the senses and the mind. When this is done and the soul rises above body-consciousness, the Master is there inside to offer the Divine Elixir of Naam. Now, are these teachings meant for any particular sect? The teachings of all great souls are meant for the entire humanity and not for the followers of any particular religion.
Hazur used to say: „Go to the door where Satguru, full of compassion and mercy, is waiting to receive you.“ Which is that door? This door is in the center and behind your two eyebrows. Once the soul gets in opportunity of testing [an opportunity of tasting ?] the elixir of Naam, it has a starting point for its spiritual journey to the ultimate destination. Moreover, this will bring about freedom from the dragnet of the mind.

Mind is a tremendous hurdle on the Spiritual Path. The world at large has always been its victim. Even Mahatmas and Rishis (great souls) in the past who tried various methods to control the mind often succumbed at some stage to its powerful impact. So, we have to control the mind. How can it be done? The mind cannot be controlled by outer pursuits like learning or studying the scriptures. Even if it is under check for a while, it again goes out of control, for it is always after sensual pleasures. There are mainly two types of attractions for the mind – beautiful things to look at and sweet melodies to hear. Just now, if you happen to hear melodious music, your attention will be diverted to it. The only way to keep it under control is to link it with Naam that has both these attractions. At various spiritual planes within, you have wonderful visions to see and also enchanting melodies to hear. When the mind has more fascinating experience within than it has outside, it is automatically subdued.
Thus, only by establishing a contact with Naam one becomes desireless. According to a parable, once Lord Krishna plunged into the river Yamuna where a thousand headed cobra used to live. Lord Krishna performed a dance on the cobra‘s head to the tune of His favorite flute and subdued the deadly snake. What does the parable signify? The thousand-headed cobra is the mind itself. The mind poisons us in innumerable ways. By attuning to the Celestial Sound Current within, mind can be subdued. There is no other remedy. A Muslim mystic has said that if you have firmly resolved to reach God, put one step on your mind and your second step will be in God‘s court.
Swami Ji now advises us to give up procrastination and to start meditation without delay. Sehaj Yoga, the path shown by Saints, has three aspects: Simran, meditation, and catching the Celestial Sound Current. Simran lifts the soul above body consciousness. Once this is done, meditation or contemplation with rapt attention provides a resting place for its stay there until it catches and listens to the Celestial Sound Current.

Shamas-e Tabrez says: „Every moment a Divine Sound is calling my soul to come to the Lord.“ Tulsi Sahib also says: „Listen with rapt attention at the archway of the real Kaaba (body) and you win hear a call from the Beyond.“ This body is the temple of God and the forehead is the archway of the temple as described by Tulsi Sahib. Procrastination is the thief of time. We tend to postpone meditation on one pretext or the other. Start meditation forthwith so that we may come out of the mortal body which is the domain of negative power. After all, this body has to be left behind. If we learn to leave it while alive, death will not perturb us. You will then be carefree. Swami Ji says that only the Satguru is capable of pulling the soul above body-consciousness. Therefore, pray with every breath for the Grace of a true Master. I have already discussed the functions of Simran; i.e., it brings the soul above body-consciousness. Another equally important point is that the soul is attached to the body; and unless a competent Master helps with His thought transference through personal attention, the soul cannot be separated and lifted above bodyconsciousness. Here lies the greatness and importance of the Satguru. As a matter of fact, the real test of a Guru is that He is capable of pulling the soul to its own seat. We must, therefore, pray for His Grace and help. All great souls have prayed likewise. Maulana Rumi testifies it by asking: „Who is capable of saving the humanity from this mysterious box (world)? Only either a prophet or a Master commissioned to do that.“ We have thus to seek the help of a Realized Soul, but He must really be a Realized Soul. When a so-called Master cannot lift his own soul above bodyconsciousness, how can he help others? The responsibility of a competent Master is great indeed. Not only He guides and helps us in this world, but He is also a torchbearer it our journey within. Swami Ji, therefore, emphasizes that the only way out is to pray to a competent Master. Out of compassion, He will give you an experience of super-consciousness. Thereafter, follow His commandments, remember Him constantly with all your heart, and ever remain eager to serve Him.
Tulsi Sahib also asks us to look through the veil of darkness behind the pupil of the eyes. How to do it? He tells us to go to a God-realized Soul. Such a Master will give you some inner experience, pull you above body-consciousness, and tell you how to see through the darkness within. Your inner eye will thus be opened. All Saints agree on this point. Swami Ji has advised us to seek the company of a true Master with love. Go there with devotion, leaving behind all worldly ideas. You should then have only one thought – the thought of your Master. Sit there with solitude and listen with full attention to what the Master has to say.

Swami Ji now explains the importance of Satsang. He says: „Attend Satsang in all seriousness.“ We have to solve the mystery of life and death. Grasp and imbibe what is taught there. We are fortunate if we get in touch with a true Master and get inner experience through His Grace. If we do not act on His commandments, our spiritual progress will be retarded. That is why so much emphasis is laid on doing away with unnecessary worldly things. This way one‘s spiritual experience will continue to grow until a luminous form of the Master appears within. He will talk to you and guide you. On getting proper guidance from the Master, devote adequate time to meditation and mold your life according to the Master‘s teachings. We must have tenacity of purpose as we cannot afford to slacken our efforts in our present state when we have yet to rise above body-consciousness. Finally, Swami Ji explains what is Naam (the Word), what is the destination, and what is our ideal? He says that our aim is to merge our soul with Sat Naam (true Word), the Eternal Nameless God Power. We have first to rise above body-consciousness and get the lowest link. After gradually traversing the various higher planes, the soul will finally reach where there is nothing but All-Truth. The three regions – primal, subtle, and causal are destructible. Beyond these three regions is Satlok or Sachkhand which is the abode of the Almighty. This is our goal and we must achieve it. Jesus Christ a the time of leaving His immortal frame, instructed His disciples first to accomplish what He had taught them. The human birth has given you a golden opportunity. Make the best use of it.

What is God, and how can we know Him? (Part 5)

Of course, we have to lead an ethical life. An ethical life is a stepping-stone to spirituality. These are the teachings of all Masters who came in the past.

As lovers of God, we should love all humanity. Having been born in any religion, it is a blessing to remain in it. Nevertheless we should rise above so that we become lovers of God, and then all mankind will have one religion.

Guru Nanak was once asked: “What is the highest form of religion in your opinion?” He replied: “Well, look here. I take all humanity, all men, as reading in the same class, seeking God. We are all classmates and I consider men the world over as classmates for the same ultimate goal.” We should love one another.

The tenth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh, was asked: “What do you think about man?” He replied: “All mankind is one – I tell you the whole truth – whether he is wearing a hat or a turban or is a recluse in a yellow or a black gown.” That makes no difference. These are the outer forms.

Excuse me if I ask you: What is the religion of God? He is all-consciousness. He made all men equal. Did He stamp anybody that he was such and such? No. When you know yourself, you will analyze yourself from the body and discover who you are. When you rise above body consciousness then you will find out. Religions pertain only to the outer forms of our life. We have to make the best use of them.

I have love for all social religions. That is all right. But the point is these social religions should go to help us on the way, to love God and to love all humanity. This is our ultimate goal. And further, to know ourselves and to know God, and have a first-hand experience of that Reality. Although that Reality cannot be expressed in words, still it can be experienced.

True religion is the first-hand experience of oneself, with his own Self and with God. That is the only true religion you have before you. There is the outer religion, and here is the inner religion. When you think everyone is all equal, then you will have love for all.

Our ultimate goal is to have love of God. Those persons or human beings whose souls came in contact with God, became the mouthpiece of God. They spoke as inspired by God. They are called Masters, or Godmen. We love them also for the sake of our love for God.
What did Christ say? He said:

No man knoweth the Son, but the Father;
Neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son,
And he to whomsoever the Son will reveal Him.

That is why your love goes to them especially. They have had a first-hand experience and they are competent to give us a first-hand experience of that Reality within. They tell us how to rise above body consciousness, to know ourselves and to know God.

Then we see with our eyes, no testimony is required. That is why we love all Masters who came in the past – whether they came here or anywhere else. You have to love God “with all thy heart, with all thy soul, with all thy mind.” Those who have loved God that way have merged their will in the Divine Will; they become the mouthpiece or conscious co-workers of the Divine Plan. Therefore, we love all Masters who came in the past.

Further, we revere all scriptures. What are these scriptures after all and what is their value to us? They are the recorded experiences of the past Masters, the experiences that they had in knowing themselves and those they had of God within themselves. They also revealed to us the things that helped them on the way and things that retarded their progress. In short, they gave us an account of their journey Godward. A description of all that formed the subject of all the holy scriptures. All saints deal with their pilgrimage to God. They tell us of the Godway, the halting stations, the various regions they passed through and what they found there; their pilgrimage on the way and their first-hand experiences at each place. They have thus left for us a fine record for our guidance.

All holy books from ages past are but footprints on the sands of time for the love-borne seekers after God. Those who are lovers of God naturally have love for all the scriptures. Kabir, the great Saint of the East, tells us: Say not that the scriptures are false, for he who does not see Truth in them is in the wrong. It is a pity that though we can read the scriptures, we cannot follow their true import until we see for ourselves what those Masters experienced within themselves, or until these are explained to us by one who has had that first-hand experience with himself and with God as those Masters had. Only then will we be following the true import of the holy scriptures. Otherwise, reading of the scriptures from morn till night, without following what the scriptures say, will lead us nowhere.

That does not mean that you should not read the holy scriptures. Read them by all means, but try to understand them rightly. When you have understood them, try to have those experiences in your own self. Only then will you be fully convinced of what they say. They may be likened to records of different persons visiting the same place – say Washington or Philadelphia – and describing it, each in his own language and in his own peculiar way.

We can read all these holy scriptures, but we cannot follow their true import until we seek the help of someone who has seen and had the experience these describe.

I would say that today in the twentieth century, we are rather fortunate. Why? We have all the fine records of the experiences of the Masters who came in the past. Had we come five hundred years ago, the holy scriptures of the Sikhs would not have been with us. Had we come, say 1500 years earlier, the holy Koran would not have been with us. And if we had come before 2000 years, the Bible would not have been with us. If we had come before the time of Zoroaster or the Buddha, or any one else, their scriptures would not have been with us. What I mean is that today we are fortunate in having with us these valuable records of the Masters who came in the past. They tell us what they experienced with themselves and God. The only thing needed now is to have someone who has had that experience which is given in those holy scriptures. He will be able to tell us the true import of things, and also he will be able to give us a first-hand experience of these things.

So for the love of God we love all Godmen. For the love of God, we love all the holy scriptures. There are so many pages of the book of God that have been written to guide the erring humanity. Many more may be written whenever any Master comes.

Further, we love all holy places of worship. Why? Because there people gather together to sing the praises of the one and the same God – in their own ways, of course. If we love somebody and someone happens to be praising him, we stand and hear how he describes him. So we have love for all holy places of worship for the love of God. Also, we love all places of pilgrimage, for they are the spots where once lived some Master, some Godman, who was one with God, who became the mouthpiece of God. It is for that alone that we have respect for all holy places where such Masters lived.

We love God first; God resides in every heart; therefore we love all humanity. For the same reasons, we love all Godmen, for they have known God. We love all holy scriptures, because they speak of Him and are valuable records of the experiences of the past Masters. Again, for the same reason we love all holy places of worship, whether temples or mosques, churches or synagogues. They are meant for chanting the praises of the Lord.

You remember, when Christ came, he entered the Temple in Jerusalem and turned out those who misused or defiled it. He told them: “You have made the house of my Father a business house.” Such a man, who is a lover of God, what will he say’? He will say what the Vedas say. The Yajur Veda says: Well, O people, let us all sit together and sing the praises of the Lord and worship the same God. But there are false ways of preaching that separate man from man. There is no common place where we can all sit together and worship the same God.

Again the Rig Veda says: Gather ye in thousands, and worship God and chant His praises. We are all lovers of the same Reality. We are all for the same Truth. There are thousands of lovers, but the Beloved is only one. We may call Him God, or by any name we like. We are lovers of the same Reality. Outwardly speaking, we have different social religions. Blessed you are. Remain where you are. To live in some social religion is a blessing. That is a helping factor. As with a midwife who helps at the birth of a child, so with social religions which help us in that way towards spirituality, in knowing ourselves and in knowing God.

What is God, and how can we know Him? (Part 4)

So on these two commandments hang all other commandments. The Sermon on the Mount, the Eightfold Path of the Buddha, the Niyama yama and Sadachar of the Hindus all speak of the same thing, in their own languages and, of course, in their own ways.

If we live up to what the scriptures say, there will be peace on earth, and the Kingdom of God will surely come on earth. Then there will be no danger of any war. What a pity: these things are given in our holy scriptures, but we follow, if at all, the letter of the law at the cost of the spirit. That is the cause of discord.

All Masters came to unite men, not to separate man from man. They were the lovers of God, and they taught men how to love all humanity. You will see, this is one side of the thing that we have before us. We are to love all humanity because God resides in every heart.

The holy scriptures, with all the rest of the sayings about the various aspects of God, have not been able exactly to say what God is. Some phase of it, some part of it they did express, out of loving devotion. But from there we can only deduce some idea of God.

Man’s highest thought of God never has and never can measure the Eternal, but it constitutes self-revelation. Your highest thought of God is not the measure of God, but the measure of our own hitherto unknown propensities. Each Master has been saying the same thing: When I attempt to speak of the highest, I cannot. I become as one dumb. How then can we express it? Even out of the love and intoxication they have of Reality, they give out something, but it still remains as unsaid as ever.

This is what the scriptures lay down. I told you this is the outer aspect of religion – social religions. When you think that God resides in every heart, you will not kill anyone. You will respect each man, when you know for certain that God resides in every heart.

When we live up to what the scriptures say, we should all love God. Naturally, we will have respect for all others, for all living things.

The human body is a true temple of God, in which God resides. The body is the true temple of God. All Masters say so. If the body is the true temple of God, how then can we destroy or kill it?

Wrong preachings are given by ministers of the various religions instead of giving out the truths which are already in our scriptures. They have been simply proclaiming that their religion, their fold, is the highest and others are in the wrong. The result is, division between man and man and, of course, clashes between class and class. They will be ready, excuse me, just to destroy so many true temples of God – human bodies – for the outer temples which we raise with our own hands.

God resides in temples not made with hands. He resides in the true temple of the body that you are carrying. Of course, we are to maintain our outer temples (bodies) and keep them clean and chaste. These bodies are the temples of God. If the right preaching is given you will see love between man and man. Paid services, in almost all religions, I would say, have gone to make matters worse.

Now, some people think that they have special privileges. Well, God gave equal privileges to all. You see the outer form. Each has two eyes, two nostrils, two ears, a mouth, two arms, two feet and two legs. The outer construction is the same, and the inner construction is also the same. Each man has lungs, stomach, brain. God has given equal privileges to all. They are born the same way; they die the same way.

When men suffer from fever, irrespective of whether they belong to one religion or another or one country or another, they suffer the same way, and there is the same remedy to cure their fever. When you go to a doctor, an adept in medicine, and tell him that you have fever, he gives you some medicine. He will give the same treatment to anyone else for the same trouble.

I mean that the outer expression, the outer privileges, are the same for each man, as given by God. The inner privileges are also the same. We are souls. God is a limitless Ocean of All-consciousness. We are conscious entities, drops of the Ocean of Life. Of course, our conscious self is hemmed in by mind and matter. It is given over so much to the organs of sense and identified with the body that we cannot now differentiate ourselves from the body.

The inner disease is also the same. Masters are physicians of the souls which have been given over to the influences of mind and matter. They tell us how to analyze the soul from the outgoing faculties, from the organs of sense, and rise above body-consciousness to know oneself, enter into the Kingdom of God and know God. All mankind suffers from the same disease.

Well, for God there is no East or West, no North or South. All creation is one. God is One.

Where do we stand now? We are all one. All Masters, all the holy scriptures say that we are the children of God. Prophet Mohammed says that we are members of the same family of God. The Sikh Masters also say that we are all brothers and God is our Father. The Christian scriptures and all others say the same thing.

Mankind is one, and God is One. We are worshippers of the same God. When we are worshippers of the same God the archers may be many, but the target is the same then, naturally we should have love for one another. You will find that two drunkards will embrace each other irrespective of whether they are of the east or the west, or belong to one religion or the other. But do you find that among those who profess to be lovers of God – between followers of one religion and those of another? They are lovers so far as their own faith is concerned. If they are lovers of God, they all should sit together and love one another.

The heads of the various religions are supposed to have contact with God. Whether they reach Him or not, that is another question altogether. But they are supposed by their followers to have seen God and to be one with God. They also profess that they are Godmen themselves. If so, why should they not love and embrace each other? There is one God overhead. It is all one humanity. We all are the same soul – conscious entity.

Man made social religions for the uplift of man. We have to make the best use of them. The best we call have out of the social religions is to know ourselves and to know God. So-called masters

What a mire the world is lost in! It doesn’t know a Saint from a charlatan!
O my brother, just because someone has collected a group of followers, does that make him a holy man?

It matters what we want to attain

Sant Kirpal Singh describes it as follows: There are Masters and masters, with due deference to all. It is for us to see what we get. Those who are after worldly things or supernatural powers or mind-reading or perhaps healing are really not after God. These are side issues. They get that thing and that is all; but they do not get God.

Why is gurudom in disrepute today?

Modern gurus are generally political at heart. They have an axe to grind – to make money and get honour and respect. They are not concerned with the well-being of the people. Their object is to impress the people by their hypocrisy, deceit and falsehood. You may be taken in by these methods.

What did Christ say: “Beware of the false prophets who come in sheep’s clothing but are ravening wolves.” They appear to be very polite. The only criterion can be one who can give you a lift, open the inner eyes so that you see there is light there; not tell you that you’ll get it in due course. What another criterion can there be, tell me? Their propaganda? No! There is no dearth of propaganda anywhere. Money can buy anything. Propaganda can be paid for. But what is the criterion? Can he open the inner eye, remove the darkness from within for you to see? There you say, “God is Light”.

So-called masters

“Tricky people create confusion and the confused follow them as their Master and out of confusion they do not leave. To create confusion in one’s heart is the act of “so-called poles” (who claim to be a Master or a competent teacher but do not have any competency). Directly or indirectly they are connected with the negative power. They themselves do not know the consequences of that play and cannot explain it to others. Preacher and followers are under illusion, which they think to be an act of God.”

“Miracles, which are a play of the astral powers, affect such people and bring them into the fold of the negative power. Those who enjoy the miraculous powers are devoid of the positive and the higher values of life, (they cannot regain them) till they really find the way to an awakened person.”

The miracles shown by those confused people are the outbursts of the astral effects in the physical world and bring them lots of diseases of the mind. Thus the diseases of the mind are due to the astral effects on the mind. In other words mental diseases or the diseases of the mind are astral diseases. Most of the people wish to gain peace of the mind, and they can be easily misled by the negative power and the astral effects upon them.

Very rare are such people who have no desires and whose wishes are fulfilled without having any desire. They are the blessed ones to whom God reveals all they need. All others are thus (due to their wishes) bound in giving and taking, since there is no (possibility of getting) free out of grace without the gracious Master. Thus all such people lose their capital, and the interests are increasing till they have lost the whole capital and also the positive vision.

Its likings in an always finer and more subtle way, and there is no end to this desire. Thus one feels even more happy when one sees something in the astral vision. But he is ignorant and does not know this play which is mere smoke and dust. The miracles which appear due to one’s wishes, affect one’s mind and the thoughts remain involved.

The fruit of life is within the belief of the Master

One may outwardly pose like a Master, one may create oneself to be a holy person and start proving a great holy personality with the help of bookish knowledge, but the inner life is not changed. For how long will such acting and posing continue? At last the cat will be out of the bag. For how long will people trust?

One may put a silken cloth on dirt, the bad smell will be emitted from there. Acting and posing have taken the place of true living. Those who act well are taken into good books. When people have bitter experiences for want of their demand, they call names (him who was not able to give them something). They should (complain), since they had given their head and heart. So Master says, “Believe only when you see yourself.” Without seeing, sometimes belief becomes a mystery and to solve it may take one’s whole life.

Master tells us: “Reading, writing, feelings, emotions. drawing inferences are all subject to error, seeing is above all.”

All worldly disputation is fake and futile.

There are two knowledges – one of the heart and the other relating to bookish knowledge. The knowledge of the heart is light and full of intoxication. It is easy to carry either during life or after life. Whereas the bookish knowledge is a burden of many sighs and is difficult to carry.

Saints have respect for the bookish knowledge provided one moves further to attain it in practical form. Otherwise this theoretical knowledge is liable to forgetting. In the scriptures there is written about God, but God is not there. Without the practical knowledge, there can be strains of various degrees, which leads to illusion and delusion.

The “so-called saints” in the world are devoid of that practical knowledge but are well versed with the theoretical aspect of life which they have grasped from the experience of others. They advise others (inspite of) their fake and suspicious conduct. They preach the truth but they act the other way. There is the difference of day and night between their inner and outer life. It is highest time to rely on the experience of our past competent Masters, which are in accordance to the holy scriptures, and to develop the sincere wish to have those experiences ourselves. And this very same experience we should demand (from a Master). One should create a ruling passion to get the highest gift of life and never remain (contented) in those experiences limited to one’s intellect and mind. Where the world’s philosophies end, there the religion starts. The physical, astral and causal region are the worlds made by physical, astral and causal matter, and they have no importance for us and have nothing to provide. Whatever exists there is not the heritage of the soul, but is rather the food and heritage of mind and intellect. What the soul wants is the longing (for God) and the reunification with Him.

What is God, and how can we know Him? (Part 3)

Ever since the world began, all Masters have been saying the same thing. We have so many scriptures at our command, so many pages of the books of God that have been written. There will be many more as each Master comes and describes his contact with God or Reality. From their God intoxication, they pour out whatever comes, of high inspiration, just to give us the knowledge of Reality they have seen. Man has been trying to follow that but has failed.

Then, how can we see Him? Ever since the world began, this has been the fate of man. Unless we see God, the question remains, what is God?

Kabir says there is one Reality in all, supporting all creation, immanent in every form. With That immanent in every form, why do we differ? Why are there so many wars, so many religions everywhere?

The reason is that when a Master came he had some experience of that Reality. To the people who met him, he simply gave them a first-hand experience of that Reality. When he left the scene – to err is human, you see – some persons gathered together and they had their own way of thinking. So changes occurred.

Again, another Master came, he found dross was added to Reality, to the teachings of the earlier Master. He thrashed out that dross and again let the people know the truth about Reality, to some extent. Again, another religion started.

The Masters never started any creed. They only gave out to the people: There is one God and you should love Him. How can you love anybody until you see him, get some good out of him? Mere feelings or emotions are simply inferences arrived at by intellectual wrestling. They will not give you any definite satisfaction. They will be wavering. Sometimes you may accept these inferences, but they are all subject to error. Unless you see Reality, come in contact with It first-hand and derive the bliss of It, ineffable and direct, enjoy happiness within – only then will you have love for Him, after having tasted the elixir of that Reality.

When the Masters come what do they tell us? St. John says: God cannot be seen with thine eyes. But then you find that some Masters said they saw God. The question was put to Guru Nanak: “Do you see God?” He replied: “I see God. He is everywhere.” Christ also said: “Behold the Lord.” He pointed to the Lord, saying: “There, behold Him.” No reasoning.

The same question was also put by Swami Vivekananda. He was initially an atheist and challenged everybody: “Is there a God? Is there any man who has seen God?”

In those days, there was a man of realization, Paramahansa Ramakrishna, and he was asked to go to him. Vivekananda went to him and asked: “Master, have you seen God?” The sage replied: “Yes, my child, I see Him as I see you, even more clearly than that.” And he came in time to be a great theist. In the latter days of his life, Vivekananda confessed: “Because of that Godman I was saved.”

You will find that those who profess to be theists are, truly speaking, not so. We have simply learnt in our scriptures that there is God. We have heard this many times, but we have not seen Him. Unless we see something, we cannot be convinced.

When difficulties arise, the vicissitudes of life come up and we have to pass through them, we are bewildered and ask “Is there a God?” We become sceptics. But once you have seen, you have had some experience of Reality, you cannot have any doubt.

The Masters say: “We see Him.” But what are those eyes with which He can be seen?

Shams-i-Tabrez, a Muslim saint, tells us that we should be able to see God with our own eyes and hear His voice with our own ears. You find in the Bible: We have eyes and see not.

What are those eyes? Guru Nanak was asked: “You say you see God everywhere.” He replied: “Those eyes with which you see God are different.” What are those eyes with which you can see God? Those are not outer eyes, but that eye which is within each one of us. That eye is called by Christ the “Single Eye.” The eye is the light of the body. If thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. The Hindu scriptures and sayings of other Masters tell us of the Third Eye, or the latent eye. That eye is within each one of us. That one eye is not of the flesh and bone, as those we have outside on our faces.

Guru Nanak defines a blind man as not the one who does not have eyes on his face, but one whose inner eye is not open to see the Light of God.

God cannot be expressed. That absolute state can be had only when you rise into that Reality. But when this Supreme Power is the cause of all creation, immanent in all forms, supporting and maintaining them, It expresses itself in two ways – Light and Sound – and that expression of the God-power is an actual experience of Godmen within. It is said, God is Light. The Mohammedans also say that God is “Noor,” i.e., Light. They say that one who goes above and beyond the physical body and sees the Light of God within is a true Muslim. The Christian can also be defined in the same way; one who sees the Light within is a true Christian. The tenth Guru of the Sikhs says the same thing: Those who see the effulgent Light of God within are true Sikhs, or true “fakirs.” They are pure ones. You will find the same definitions given in all religions, in all the holy scriptures: Have you seen the Light within you? Again, they have said: If you shut the doors of the temple of the body, you will see the Light of Heaven. It is a possibility.

All the scriptures tell us of the Light of God within. The Voice of God also reverberates in each one of us. There is a way in which we may have an experience of that Reality and its expression. That is the way back to God. Has our closed inner eye been opened or not? That is the question. Unless that inner eye be opened, we cannot see the Light of God within us. It is a question of introversion and inversion.

The ultimate goal of all religions is God, and that we should be able to see God. Leaving the non-essentials, what do they tell us? They say, Love thy God. This is said by all the religions. When you see and come in contact with God, only then, truly speaking, can you love God. At present, your loving God is practically impossible. Simply on the emotional side, you sometimes say certain things, but you have no contact with that Reality, and true love does not arise, and does not last.

When the Pharisees and the Sadducees went to Christ they returned in silence, because an intellectual man speaking to a man of realization cannot stand before him. While the latter sees certain things and then speaks, the intellectual man simply quotes verses from the holy scriptures which he has read, and afterwards he cannot reconcile things.

Naturally, when they came to Christ, they became quiet. Then they gathered together and came up to Him. “Now, Master, what is the greatest commandment in the law?” What did he say? Jesus said unto them:

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy soul and with all thy might. This is the first and greatest of all commandments. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

The ultimate teaching of all social religions is just to love God. As God resides in every heart, love all humanity, all creation. For the love of God, you are to love all humanity. If we have love for all humanity, all other commandments follow. He whom you love, are you going to kill him? Are you going to rob him of his property? Are you going to bear false witness against him? No, not in the least.
